“The P800 is a stunning phone. ”

Written on: 27/03/2003 by Drachan. (1 review written)

The P800 is a stunning phone.
I remember seeing original press releases in the second to third quarters or so of 2002 and getting very excited about this piece of kit. Everything about it screamed "breakthrough." It is, therefore, a real shame that Sony have done a bit of a "Nintendo" and released their piece of groundbreaking kit so late that it's *almost* run of the mill.. But All is not Lost.

I've owned a fair few gadgets in my time, I was the first person I know to get an Apple Newton… Read Full Review

Hi Von, thanks for your detailed reply. I've just upgraded to a Sony Ericsson T610 which has bluetooth, though i was unable to sync with my Palm Tungsten. Instead i used infrared to send contact and calendar entries from Palm to phone which worked well. However, I am having the T610 exchanged today as it has a 'hissing' sound which apparently is a bug and it caused a recall of all T610s in Singapore when it launched back in April. Fingers crossed, the new T610 I am getting today will not have the 'hissing' sound.

Hedona, the P800 will synch with your Palm in a number of ways. 1. via your PC of Mac, that is how I sync. 2. via IrDa, that is how I sync on the move. I do not have a bluetooth PDA, but I know that the P800 will communicate via bluetooth for say latest traffic updates via GPRS on the phone fed to the PDA via bluetooth. Bluetooth is basically depedant upon the apps you have on your Palm. As far as teh comment about you not needing your Palm if you get a P800, that is simply not true. I have an iPAQ (forced by work) & my P800 & both serve their own distinct purposes.
<br>
<br>The screen on your Palm (& my iPAQ) is larger than the P800 & so better suited for long documents. The memory capacity of the P800 is not yet up there as far as a dedicated PDA. The P800 will currently go as far as a 128MB Memory Stick Duo with larger capacities yet to become available whereas on my iPAQ I have over 1GB of SD & CF storage (MP3 & Video certainly waste space as well as my project plans, presentations & documents).
<br>
<br>However, I nearly always have my P800 on me, but not so often my iPAQ. So the P800 is synced with my PC & my iPAQ on a regular basis.

Probably could but no need for the Palm Pilot as this phone is already a PDA. Why would you require two PDA's?

Written on: 10/03/2003 by Tech Freak. (1 review written)

What do you look for in a phone? Make and receive calls, SMS, a phone book of course. But what if you could be in your office without really being there? This is the P800.

The features on this phone are so impressive and all of them work so well. It is a phone with PDA functions. It has 12MB Internal memory to store all contacts, user data, images, messages, third party applications etc. And the supplied Memory Stick Duo gives it virtually "unlimited" external memory!!

Thanks for your review. I have 2 questions you might know the answer to. First, can it sync Lotus Notes email and calendar? Second, can it do 4-way or 6-way call conferencing? The second, esp, is a feature I use a lot at work.

Wow! what a phone, not only does it play my music, but it can also play movies whilst i'm travelling. All i need know is for it to wake me up with breakfast in bed!

The games which come with it are ace - especially the card game - and there are so many games which can be downloaded to join the growing list of fun that this phone is becoming.

The camera takes excellent quality photos and you can store loads on your phone and transfer them to your pc via the connection cables.

I am very pleased with this phone. I have had it for two weeks now and am still enjoying just playing with it. I have never given so many people demos of a gadget before. Everyone wants to try this phone out; family, colleagues, even a complete stranger on the train asked me about it! They were all impressed.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box to find Sony/Ericsson have included a few extra goodies. As well as the phone, battery, instructions, sim card, and charger there were

It syncs with Outlook OK. However i only use it for storing/editing contacts...occaisionally. Download a little program call p800 remote or some such. This allows you to control you phone using your PC via the USB cable packaged with the phone. I do all my e-mails, contact, messages, picture editing, IM, SMS via my PC and then the handset. Sod Outlook.

I have an XDA and I'm sold on this P800 The camera is very good and the operating system is fast. Thanks for your detail and effort which reassure my decision to buy it.

Written on: 04/03/2003 by Chillicrumble. (1 review written)

This mobile is the best mobile phone i have ever had! I got it for £500 from carphone warehouse - simfree, the screen is brilliant, there are more features than any other mobile phone i have ever had (and thats alot). I used to have the nokia 7650 but i sold it, that was the best mobile phone i have ever had, but the P800 was 10 times better than that, the camera was so much better, the quality is brilliant! To be fair the price is astronomical for most people - but it is well worth the money… Read Full Review

Written on: 26/01/2003 by Frank Grundin. (1 review written)

After two weeks I'm still more and more pleased for each day, that since I each day find new interesting and useful functions.

I like the design of the "phone" (it's so much more than a phone), the manuvearibility in the GUI is very easy to understand. The (I think Sony) Jog Dial button make it possible to do almost everything without touching the numbers or the display.

The touch screen make it possible to have the "phone" as a Palm (calendar) and actually the P800 support what I know so far… Read Full Review

Written on: 22/01/2003 by CS. (1 review written)

I've been using the P800 for about 3 weeks now, and at first it was really quite complicated to use. You really have to read the manual carefully. The design of the phone looks good but in reality is a little on the flimsy side, especially the plectrum like writing tool they provide. It tends to go missing but fortunately they provide a few spares. Don't expect to take too many photos unless you are going to store it all in the memory stick and transfer it out later on, as the photos and… Read Full Review

Written on: 25/03/2003

From all other reviews and pictures I have seen comparing them, the P800 takes far better pictures than the Nokia 7650.
<br>Also, there is no longer a need for T9 as you can use the handwriting recognition (far quicker) or the pop up keyboard so it is superfluous.

83638_Per.'s Response to 67252_CS.'s Review

Written on: 27/03/2003

I have to agree with Jerry, I don't really care for the T9 function since it doesn't support slang and keeps making idiotic suggestions. So I don't miss that function at all. There are other ways to compose SMS:es which I prefer.
<br>The pictures are also better than those from made by my friends Nokia. A big plus in my book is that I haven't had any battery issues as I have with my two Nokias (6150 and 6210), I've had both Nokias on repair since they shut themselves off every now and then because the battery doesn't have as close fit to the connectors as they should.
<br>In all i like my P800 more and more....the only thing I can complain about it is the hefty pricetag, but considering all the functions you get its bearable.

With large 4096color display, you can do many things that other phone can't. It has camera, bluetooth, infra red, messages(mms, sms, email), java-enabled, flip(duh..!), Li-Polymer Battery, etc..

I havent had enough time with the phone yet, but so far it seems to be exactly as I expected, and more. There is a limit to how small a device can be to successfully operate as a PDA. This will never be as small as a phone only device. but considering you need a decent size screen for a PDA, the size is about perfect. A PDA any smaller would not really be practical or very usable.
