I'm having to take my Siemens SL45 phone back as the phone peeps all by itself in the middle of the night, crashes all the time and is as slow as my gran! Also, when it's dropped, the metal paint comes off and looks pants. Please let me know if its just me with these problems. Also it's too slow and not as good as nokia… Read Full Review

When you say 'crash' do you mean a software 'Freeze' and you have to switch the phone off and on again to fix it?
If so, you are not alone. Mine has been back for repairs once (which took over 6 weeks with KJC) and is now doing it again now and then.
Otherwise I like the phone apart from the snail-like MP3 download time. But the menu system could be a touch more logical and the voice activation is very limited.
(My Psion is much faster download times by the way and thats serial too.)

Written on: 02/02/2002 by Joao. (1 review written)

Guys, it seems you are forgeting some aspects relating to the mobile phone world. First, the Siemens sl45 was the first mobile phone with mp3 and mmc (if i'm not mistaken). Just like cars of a new series (eg. v. golf iv), they all come with defects and problems (bugs) in the first year, so, it's not advisable to buy them when they come out (a question of time, I guess). Of course if you buy them you have waranty. In the other hand, you don't get a free upgrade to fix the mobile (it's not only… Read Full Review

I have been a Nokia fan for years & have owned many different mobiles. This SL45 phone from Siemens looks cool & has some great features. The MP3 player is outstanding although it would benefit from a larger capacity multimedia card. The serial port connection for downloading tunes is a joke. Why didn't Siemens use a USB port? The unit is a bit of a "posers phone". Sure it looks great & has some features which are handy but it is let down badly by a very poor menu system, small multimedia card… Read Full Review

I have always been a nokia fan until one week of owning an 8210. The screen failed.....rubbish.
I've now had my Siemens SL45 phone around 6 months. If you can live without being able to change the back/front it's got to be the best phone you could ever hope for.
Drag and drop loads of ringtones/logos to the phone from your pc in no time, and store as many as you want!!!

Maybe you haven't utilised the features the SL45 has. With its 32 MB memory card, you can store more messages on there than anyone could ever write.

I had this Siemens SL45 phone for over 6 months and I must say that I was impressed by the look and the fact that it was the FIRST mobile that has a built-in MP3 player in it. I should have known better that a company like Siemens cannot really outplay the specialists Nokia and Ericsson in this area..but I was fooled by the look. This person is rubbishing an excellent phone. Ok it doesn't have USB transfer, its one flaw but you can buy a USB card reader if you are an MP3 freak. In every other respect this is a class phone, packed with features. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but to give it 2/10 and say Siemens are clueless, well this review speaks for itself!

Forget to mention: The battery is sucks... does not last that long if you used it functions such as games and MP3 (30 min of MP3 roughly = 30 hr of stand by time, max stand by time is 170 hr)- this I think also happen to other phone. This phone is not recommended to non-techie person. If you just plan to use this phone to make a call, just buy nokia. But if you like to 'tweak' the phone, it is quite fun. You might also need to buy new MMC card since the 32 MB MMC card can only hold roughly 6 songs - 30 minutes.

During the two months I have been using this phone (and I only got it because I managed to haggle the price down from £150 to just £30), I have found the siemens SL45 to be a nice little phone to use. This phone has many good points - MP3 Player, Dictaphone, WAP, a lovely orange backlight (makes a change from green!) an absolutely huge phonebook/addressbook capacity, IrDA, good reception quality (on One2One anyway), the list goes on, although its not perfect - I mean, siemens stuck an antenna… Read Full Review

I've had my Siemens SL45 phone for a few months now. When I first got it I was impressed with it. Gave it 10/10 for everything. It's only after using it a while and you got over the initial euphoria of it, that you realise that this mobile is utterly rubbish.
The texting menu is soooo tediously slow! I've wanted to smash this mobile up on more than one occasion! I can't believe how slow it is. I've owned 4 different make mobiles over the years and this is without doubt the slowest I've ever… Read Full Review

Thanks. I was considering buying this phone but have been having some doubts. I think you hit the nail on the head. The phone is clearly seriously flawed and not up to the standard that should be expected of modern handsets. The mp3 feature whilst initially a pull, I have realised is no more than a gimic. After all 32mb wont hold that many mp3's and constantly downloading new ones with a serial cable would no doubt be a signifant iritation.

The other phone that I've been considering is the Nokia 6510 (same features as the 8310 but a more executive finish - not girly). I think I shall be going back to my original choice.

Written on: 28/12/2001 by jay. (1 review written)

I got my Siemens SL45 on the back of all the good reviews saying what a great phone it is. It has some great features, and looks good, but underneath it's a cheap piece of shoddy work from Siemens. They've used cheap, slow technology and set out to rip the public off by making it look good. They then have the audacity to charge a lot of money for it. So what's wrong with it:
The SMS is painfully slow. You're forever watching the hourglass. You'll wait 10 secs watching the hourglass before… Read Full Review

mate, couldn;t agree with you more.
i have always been with nokia, but then decided to give the siemens sl45 a try cos it had the capability to store loads of texts. what i didn't realise was how long it took so do so (the time consuming process of archiving them)
i use text messages frequently and type very quickly. the sl45 can never recgnise what i am writing, as it cannot keep up with the speed at which i type.
i then went back to nokia (8310 which can keep up no problem)
i have also tried an ericsson t68. when texting on that, it is even slower than the sl45. (usually 5-6 words behind what i am actually writing). hence that phone was returned after only a few days.
My advice: stick with nokia. although they may not have as many little extras as some other phones eg sl45 or t68, they are all round much faster and more efficient phones. There is a better feel of quality and they are far more convenient to use

All true, plus it'll only hold a few incomming texts.
Ugrading it to an SL45i (don't tell Siemens) sorts some problems, but not the text malarkey.
The one useful function I still use is the connection to outlook for the number memory - which is still poor as the phone doesn't list phone numbers first, but email address.

I've just ordered one! I've read the good AND bad reviews and I reckon my main concern will be the slow texting. However I may use my off-contract, PAYG 3310 for the contract the siemens comes with, and stick the PAYG sim in the siemens, therefore having the siemens features to hand but the nokia for fast texting. I hope this makes sense. Besides, 'slow' is not the single focal point is it?!!

I was so excited to get this Siemens SL45 phone which very soon turned into a big disappointment. The phone would switch itself off whether it was in your pocket or sitting on the desk, the 6 button had to be pressed very hard to work. The phone would also freeze up in the menu and I would have to remove the battery to reset it. I rang Siemens who informed me that they would send a new replacement handset after having to argue with them for 30mins. I received a replacement handset which turned… Read Full Review

I have always been a Nokia fan for years. I have used Nokia 6 series and 8 series in the past. Recently, I just bought Siemens SL45. My biggest admiration for this phone is its rich features despite its compact size. Any features can be found in this tiny phone, you name it, from WAP to voice dialing and memo, from MP3 to games. Not to mention you can store as much as data (voice, sms, song, appointments) into MMC supplied with the package. At the moment it is limited up to 32 MB. But you can… Read Full Review

I have had this phone for around two weeks now and also [still have] a Nokia 8310. The intention was to compare the two "at home" and then take the one back I didn't like. I do admit that it has been hard at times, as both offer some really nice features. I like the smallness of the Nokia 8310+Radio [and I still think it just shades the Siemens SL45 in terms of sexy-looks] but hate the fact that it doesn't have any more added features than the 8210 did. As a bit of a girl I'm not sure I really will use the MP3 I think that it is more of a boys toy....But the phone looks Sexy and is good for your street cred. Also I picked it up for £40 with a gold number 300mins across network and 50min text. Bargain!!!!! It pays to be cheeky.
