“Don't buy a Henry vacuum!!!!”

Written on: 15/09/2011

I bought a Henry vacuum to replace our current Miele vacuum. The Miele is 7 yrs old, and although the motor is working fine, the door to it has come off and the attachments have been falling out - so I decided it was time for something different. I have affectionate memories of Henry, since the cleaners at my primary school used to use one and so he reminds me of my old school and my childhood. I read lots of reviews on Amazon and on here, and the vast majority of them were excellent, so I… Read Full Review

Firstly your theory that you need to \"ram the hose together\" is unnecessary and misleading! If you twist the poles into each other they fit easily and equally you can \"untwist\" them to seperate.
Your comment re: skirting boards etc and damaged paintwork is maybe because you have not found the plastic edging tool (as opposed to the brush) which is supplied with the hoover!!!!
The long hose is in my opinion an absolute godsend which allows me to hoover up the stairs, landing, hall and living/dining room without having to drag or carry a hoover body with me. (I live in an average sized home not large offices!)
Maybe you need to give this hoover a bit of time so you can adjust to its abilities!

“The best vacuum available.”

Written on: 29/05/2011

After working in the hire industry for many years the Henry is the best by far so much that I brought one myself. People that have problems keeping the tubes together just need to push them together harder (I have never had a problem with this).People that say he is not powerful enough,it does have bag's that need replacing or it is not put in properly, you MUST use it with a bag. It pick's our white dog hair's up with ease. I have never seen a major problem with this machine (I have been around… Read Full Review

“UNSAFE/UNUSEABLE”

Written on: 26/05/2011 by Canarysong (1 review written)

I have found the Henry Vacuum Cleaner by Numatic International to be UNSAFE and difficult to use. I would like to emphasize UNSAFE! The long attachments DO NOT fasten together with proper knobs and catches and ALWAYS COME APART when in use. I would like to emphasize ALWAYS! They have been like this from new out of the box and I have been injured on numerous occasions when the long extensions just fall away and disconnect from each other WHILE vacuuming with the chrome/stainless steel… Read Full Review

You have to TWIST the attachments on as far as they will go, then they won't come off!
Most people seem to "ram" them on , which doesn't work

I can assure you that both my husband and I do twist the attachments on and they DO come off again no matter what. The fact remains that connections should be made with a positive catch of some sort as most GOOD manufacturers have been using for donkey's years. Perhaps the users that have no problems don't vacuum very energetically.

Also, the floor attachment is USELESS on mats. I'm not even talking thick pile carpet. I'm just talking a throw mat in front of the door. Try and pull the attachment across that and it ALWAYS comes off.

Two years later, I still prefer my Miele

Thanks for your reply to my comment. I do sympath ise, because I've suffered the annoyance and frustration of this problem with other vacuums, but not the Henry or Hetty. Why don't you give Numatic a call on 01460 68600.? I had to contact them once, and they were really friendly and helpful
Hope you can sort it out,as I'm sure you will be as pleased as I am. if you do?

Tropi's reply to Birdsong's Comment

Written on: 29/01/2013

I absolutely agree with Canarysong.

The attachments fall apart far too easily because there is NOTHING, other than unreliable friction, to hold them together. I've lost count of the number of times I have painfully nipped my fingers trying to hold the two straight tubes together. This isn't a minor inconvenience - it is a major and painful nuisance, which would simply not exist if proper catches were provided.

Health and Safety does, too often 'go mad'. But in this case, canarysong is 100% correct - the attachment connections are simply not fit for purpose and it is inexcusable.

In all other respects, the little Henry is really excellent. But, with useless tools, the whole thing becomes almost useless.

“Numatic HVR200A HENRY A1 Bagged Cylinder Vacuum...”

Written on: 08/05/2011 by judylugg (47 reviews written)

Numatic HVR200A HENRY A1 Bagged Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner plus Kit A1, Red/Black
Cost £95 plus P&P

This cleaner was bought by my daughter with whom I live as our old cleaner (a very good one, actually, had come to the end of its useful time). She had been told how powerful HENRY HOOVERS ARE! Yes, they are and that is all that is good about it.

I hate it, it is far, far TOO HEAVY, CUMBERSOME AND DIFFICULT TO PULL AROUND. The flexible pipe is very much too long as well, getting in the way… Read Full Review

Worst review I have ever read. The best Hoover money can buy. Do you work for Dyson? Talking of which I did some removal work and dropped one accidently from about a foot off the floor and it broke. I could have thrown a Henry from outside the truck. Simple and brilliant.

It is confusing how so many people interchange the word "vacuum" for the word "hoover". Hoover is actually a brand name like Kleenex but the problem comes when a particular brand becomes a household name. We tend to apply the brand name to anything and everything like it. Not good.

But with regards to the Henry, I've had mine for nearly three years and I hated it when I got it and I hate it even more now. The connecting pipes and attachments do not fit with any type of proper fitting and they are forever falling apart whilst I vacuum. I can't pull the floor attachment over a flat mat without it falling off. Within seconds I have the connecting pieces falling all over me and onto the floor. This is more than annoying and we do twist them on as tightly as they will go but they still manage to fall apart! The suction is not nearly as good as my Miele and when I drag the Henry, it always seems to find a way to tip over so I have to walk up to it, bend down and put it right.

I have had other canister vacuums before and have never had as much frustration as I've had with the Henry... poor design. I hate it.

I dont get it, the Henry is one of the lightest easiest vacuum cleaners to use ever made.

Heavy? Cumbersome? Difficult to pull?

You must be a very (Forgive me) weak person :/

Also in fairness to the other comment , you did call your Henry a hoover and not a vacuum cleaner.

“My review of the HVR-200A ”

Written on: 13/04/2011

My review of the HVR-200A
I am sure I am not alone with this. - I had carpets with Dyson Upright Vacuum (hey, that's probably half the population then) The Dyson cleans well, but it is cumbersome and heavy, especially when you only have small to medium sized rooms, and it's a swine to carry it up/down stairs. I do like uprights and would not have a cylinder cleaner for carpets, full stop.

However, I changed over completely to laminate floors and sweepers are only good for crumbs. A friend of… Read Full Review

Am not at all impressed with Numatic Henry . It's far heavier and more cumbersome than my previous hoover, especially on stair cases. The tubes do not fit together properly, stiff to pull apart and floppy when in use. Takes far too much physical effort to change attachments. Topples over easily. Hose pipe is too long so body gets left miles behind and caught around things. Low power is virtually useless. Carpet brushes are way too stiff so its hard to push along the surface. I was given the pink (Hetty) version of this hoover for Xmas by my daughter and I daren't tell her how much I hate it! Written on: 31/08/2010 by Michael Stanley Walsh (1 review written)

I am a graphic and product designer and designed HENRY for the Numatic company around thirty years ago when I lived in England. It has been a huge success and sold throughout the world. I am very proud of Henry, not only does it clean well but it is very compact and people love the way this little character folows them around the house.

Wieland's Response to Michael Stanley Walsh's Review

Written on: 12/04/2011

Michael Stanley Walsh claims that he designed Henry. This is simply not true.
<br/>How do I know?
<br/>Because I did the characterisation that has made Henry the success that he has become during the last 4 decades.
<br/>Together with Mr C R Duncan, the boss of Numatic who will doubtless be contacting Mr Walsh shortly in order to disabuse him of his fantasies, we created Henry in my ad' agency in Kingston in the mid-seventies.
<br/>Mr Walsh is the second person in the past year to lay claim to the Henry design. I suppose its rather like copying being a sincere form of flattery but one has to ask 'where are these people coming from?'<br/>As a graphic and product designer myself and also resident in France I would like to hear of- even see some of Mr Walsh's other designs if he is not now concerned that I might know the true author. Does he have a website showcasing his work?

This is a seriously powerful and reliable machine. Having bought my first house, I've been undertaking quite a bit of DIY and creating a fair amount of mess in the process :-) ! Henry is a legend. He hasn't complained at all about being fed rubble, sawdust, plaster or brick dust and has helped to keep my home clean and tidy. I only use Hepaflo bags with my machine. Henry Vacuum cleaner. Forget about Dyson: you get a design compromise on every single model. The fact they keep feeling the need to change it, says a lot! The Henry has a very simple build so there is very little to break or go wrong - even if it falls down the stairs. No gimmicky extras like automatic card winders (which always break). Suction is excellent, they're easy to manoeuvre - even under furniture - and the cord is REALLY long so you don't need to keep moving plugs. The bag capacity… Read Full Review

Dont't be put off by the smiley face - underneath lies a commercial machine, with performance and reliability to match. I will openly admit to being a ham-fisted goon, I have a habit of accidentally damaging things, so decided that a commercial vacuum was what I needed, having broken several domestic models, two of which were Dyson machines - these don't deserve the reputation they have.
