“The phone has all the features that you would expect....”

Written on: 08/01/2003 by ant. (1 review written)

The phone has all the features that you would expect. polyphonic tones, colour screen and GPRS. It also has a few luxuries like digital camera and voice memo function. The camera is great with good quality that can be used for loads of things [wallpapers etc] the voice memo however is not as good. With a very low volume that makes it very hard to hear. The disign is good, as although it's big it uses it's space well with a big good quality screen. The major problem I had with this phone is that… Read Full Review

This phone lacks software to connect it to your PC to upload pictures - BEWARE! I think its a very cynical move on part of O2 and Sharp - is this true of the GX10 too?? Other than that very good, nice size… Read Full Review

Both the GX1 with O2 and the GX10 of Vodafone do not have pc connectivity. True enough, a move to stop people getting free ringtones. Just use your O2 gprs. You SHOULD get all inclusive GPRS space/

Thanx Blabb, it will be very useful to know whether the data cable can be used to transfer pics from the phone to a computer as it will greatly increase the usefulness of the camera. Could you also tell me how much you have found the cable for? I think I saw one somewhere for about £40.

Knox is right there is a data cable available for the sharp GX1 - Data Cable XN-1DC10. I have ordered and will update you on whether it does mean you can move pictures and sound files to your phone. If it does mean you can then this phone is well worth purchasing.

If you looked into the gx1 in more depth on the net you would have found out that it is possible to connect it to your pc, although the connection enables the modem, the data cable can also be used for your purposes too. Perhaps a usb IR dockingbay may also get round the problem.

By that do you mean that you can use the free gprs to transfer pics off the phone? Because the O2 deal I was looking at includes 0.5Mb per month of gprs, which could save abit off money over paying 40p per mms msg.

“The sharp gx10 is that famous flip phone from...”

Written on: 11/12/2002 by Mike. (1 review written)

The sharp gx10 is that famous flip phone from Vodafone, being heavily advertised by the company around the world. However, Europeans attention is being brought to the Sharp GX10's brother, the Sharp GX1, which is infact newer than the GX10. GX1 vrs GX10 There is very little difference in the phones, the GX1 is arguably superior in a number of ways than the GX10. The phones is definately more durable and sturdy and less easily scratched that the flimsier brother, the gx10. The gx10 however has… Read Full Review

This is a great review, i was thinking getting a gx1 because of it's big screen and in built camera , but it is £299.95 in my argos catalogue and where i live which is in kent , but now i have seen loads of the gx1 phones for about £140 which i am going to buy, also i know how to transfer pictures from it to a pc as a mate told me as he use to have it on pay monthly but he couldn't afford it any more. if you want to know where to get the phone for £140 email me and i'll send you the details. p.s. it is a auction site with a buy it now option. I bought the GX1 this weekend after doing some research and wanting certain features. The GX1 was free on the pay monthly tariff I went with and I think when you compare that with £99 for the ugly Nokia 7650. (I went in the O2 shop today three days after buying it and it is now £49.99.
Think I got an excellent deal there. SO be warned shop around before committing.
Reception is great, find the phone easy to use if sometimes a bit longwinded to get round but hey the price you pay for a great phone. Battery life could be better but it is powering a top phone!!!
Buy one and see for yourself

“The Sharp GX1 mobile phone's first impression is WOW!...”

Written on: 07/12/2002 by Mike. (1 review written)

The Sharp GX1 mobile phone's first impression is WOW! It's a beautiful phone with a smart built in camera, the buttons feel good, and the screen is pretty big. It comes with a hands free kit and a charger as standard. Inserting the battery and the sim is easy enough. After you've plugged it in, you can begin. A wonderfully vivid screen is what meets you. The camera itself is surprisingly good. It's sharper than my Intel Webcam. Although it uses a mirror so if your walls are bright, take this as… Read Full Review

Wap is a surf application, which you can use with GPRS, or just via GSM. GPRS is faster. So GPRS and Wap are different things. I'm sorry but i dont know if you can use wap with GPRS, with your 500 min free WAP minutes. In Holland we don't have that with O2.

I have just purchased a GX1 and am very pleased with it. Just one problem - I have downloaded a ring tone which is sitting in my SMS inbox - I don't have a clue how to move it into the sound gallery or turn it into a ringtone - at the moment it is a message full of letters etc which I assume is the melody - must I copy this melody editor or is there an easier way.

There are ringtones! But the sound gallery is only for sounds that you have downloaded of recorded. When you press the# button for a few seconds, you can edit a profile, and then select a ringtone!

Thanks for the great reviews and opinions. I literally got this phone a few hours ago thinking i was ordering a GX10(shows you what I know)!, and am having a few problems. There is no built in ringtones! Is this just me or am i going crazy? It says "no file" when i go into sound gallery! If this is another markering ploy by O2 can anyone recommend any wap sites i can download them from? What is the use of the infrared link if you cannot send pics or midi files? Thanks.

I have the phone to, and I can see also al little line in the middle of the screen, but not only in camera mode. But it isn't very annoying. The camera quality is quite good, but you need good light. The reception is good, i can't discover a difference with my old phone( NOKIA 3330) It's true that the only way to take good pictures is in the highest resolution, because the middle en lowest resolution has bad quality.
The good thing about the phone is the price. I bought it in The Netherland( only with O2) for 299 euro, inclusing 50 euro prepaid.
The screen of the phone is really good and very large, an SMS fits completely in the screen, without scrolling. The games are not very spectacular, but they are not bad. It's a pity that the phone doesn't have JAVA, but if you look at the price it's not bad, you can't have everything...:-)

65830_Mike.'s Response to 56449_Mike.'s Review

Written on: 16/01/2003

John, The pictures are not anywhere NEAR 18mb, Infact about 16kb, thats nothing.
The picture quality at the time of print is the superior quality in all mobile cameraphones, and of course the standby is reasonably shorter than the average phone because of the large colour screen, MIDI ringtones and camera.
The phone is a great investment...BUT!!!!
The scam of no pc connectivity is a major problem for most, it is a move from the major phone companies and is expected to be put into place by all O2, Vodafone Orange and T-MOBILE phones in the near future, without this there would be landslide losses for the ringtone companies and for the providers.

I bought this for my girlfriend and agree with all said above BUT one big problem is that you can only use the IR for connecting to the GPRS... you cannot upload pictures taken with the phone to your PC!! A cunning ploy by O2 and sharp to make us pay through the nose for saving pictures (if they're 40p a pop you might as well get film developed!)
I urge everyone to complain as I think this is very cynical on Sharp and o2's parts.

The Gx1 does have 3 games. They're fine, but nothing special.
The camara is not that good (I haven't checked out the quality of other camaras on phones), but I'm comparing it to my digital camara which does very good quality photos. It's absolutely fine for photo messaging and it has a zoom setting (although not when you use the biggest picture size - you only need this if you're transferring it to a computer) and a 5 setting light meter. From the instuction booklet, you can only transfer the photos to a computer by emailing them by mms and not by the infared link. The standard photos come out very small, so I've been using the largest picture size. The pictures have been coming out a bit blurry. Good for a bit of fun, but not too practical if you need them for work or anything like that. With the large picture size (17 or 18 mb), I've only been able to attach 1 to each mms. With the standard size you can attach about 5.
The phone is very good. Good reception and the colour screen is big. I hardly used wap on my old phone as you couldn't get much on the screen. I've already used it more on my new phone in 2 weeks than 1 1/2 years with the old one. You can pick up and send pop3 emails by wap, but not eg hotmail. I just set up an o2 email address on their website and this is very easy to access by wap.
The polyphonic ringtone composer is also fun.
All in all I would definitely recommend the phone as long as you don't need things like blue tooth, triband, voicedial and java - particularly at the price. It is definitely good value.

61105_Andrew Davis.'s Response to 56449_Mike.'s Review

Written on: 29/12/2002

A great phone in my opinion. I waited for about 3 months after my contract ended for a decent phone to come on to the market (which is a first - I normally line up an upgrade weeks in advance!). The Nokia 7650 may have the camera and the Nokia features but, admit it - it's ugly! The Sharp GX1, however, was well worth the wait. Great display - ideal for viewing your emails and even better for texts - view the whole thing without scrolling! Navigation is excellent - better than the Sony Ericcson effort! The only downside I can think of is battery time. Then again, once the novelty of the camera wears off it shouldn't be so bad. At the moment I'm recharging every 3-4 days where as my old Nokia 8310 was every 7 or 8 days. My advice is to buy it via 02 online - at the moment it's a bargain £79.99 (I bought it for £129.99 and it went down just 3 weeks later - not happy!).
