The Kodak DC215 battery tray latch will break causing you to tape the tray in if you drop it. Hey! Last I knew your aren't supposed to drop sensitive stuff like digital cameras. Replacement is easy if you can read and have a small Phillips head screwdriver and if you have a free 45 minutes. The price of this camera outweighs all this. I like it so much that I'm buying these things as fast as I can find them so I can put them into the hands of others. Thanks Kodak...........

The Kodak DC215 digital camera is old and cheap now, but it's still a pain with the battery clip broken, and you have to tape it closed. Even though it is easy to use and takes nice pictures, it eats batteries!

Kodak will not stand behind their products. they say they will when you go to buy it or read the review comments or their web site.
The real point is that I have a Kodak DC215 digital camera with a broken latch and battery tray just like all the others that have bought this camera. I called, email, complained with no evail. They say i must send it to them and pay in advance for any repairs even when it broke under their so called warranty period. I will never buy a camera from this Japan based company ever again.

written by Johnno. on 25/09/2002

Bought my Kodak DC215 2 years ago as a first digital camera and have taken some good quality snaps.
I found the short battery life annoying so purchased some NiMh cells which sorted this problem and I also purchased a 128 MB flash card from Amazon, which gave me an incredible ammont of storage to play with.
Sadly this excellent little camera took an 18 inch fall off my car passenger seat last week breaking the internal locking mechanism on the battery tray so it no longer functions. As a result I am replacing it with a Samsung Digimax 230 which looks to have more functions but I would not hesitate to recommend the DC215 either new (if you can still find one) or second hand.

“I bought the Kodak DC215 digital camera at a...”

★★★★☆

written by Colin. on 22/04/2002

I bought the Kodak DC215 digital camera at a knock-down price of £70 from a retailer who seemed to have forgotten about it. I got nothing but the camera. A serial interface cost less than £7. OK, so the DC215 is a bit outmoded. I occasionally use a Fuji Finepix 2400Zoom at work, but that has far too many features for personal use. I like the look and feel of the DC215. I like the fact that the Manual is available on the Web. Above all, I like its ease of use. I could go on ... the LED screen is reassuringly large and easy to read. The range of customisation options is impressive. The photos come out in convincing colour, if a bit blurry.
But, what the heck, the DC215 is real value for money. It parks pics on the computer effortlessly (I can't say that for the Fuji!). Get longlife batteries, use a DC adapter when you download and in the DC215 you have a camera which you will cherish. I have inserted this review just to reassure those who have written nice things about the DC215 in the past that there still are some who share their enthusiasm.

written by windaddiction. on 11/01/2002

I bought the DC215 zoom digital camera by Kodak because i got a good deal on it. (it was a return) I took it home and started taking pictures.
I pretty much liked everything about the camera. The wait time isn't too long between pictures and for the price the pictures are fairly good.
The one major plus this camera has is it's optical zoom, it makes up for only having one megapixel.
The only thing that is missing is more features like motion shots, and the abiltiy to make short movies.

i bought this kodak digital camera, a factory refurbished one for CAN$205 or about US$128 which is really a good deal. the resolution is pretty good for its price (its a 1 meg pixel camera), came with 4 mb CF card, which can store up to 55 pictures in the lowest resolution and quality, and its really easy to use.

[-]
the camera's battery life is too short (i think) because a new set of battery lasted only for about 50-75 shots. The lens cover is a cap that you put over the lens, not a built in one. there was no AC adapter included, which could have been useful since u need the power on to synchronize the digital camera with your PC. The unit was heavier than a regular 35mm camera, might be because of the 4 AA batteries that power it.

It might be possible to use it as webcam iv you have a video card, but you would have to change the firmware a little so that it puts the output on video out if you press the macro button....

I inherited this camera off the mother inlaw, who never used it because of the woeful battery life, around 20-25 minutes. I have modified this unit to use a 4 amp hours lead acid battery, it lasts for weeks on one charge, the battery is a Yuasa NP4-6. 6 Volt, originally from a Lantern.

We have no prior experience of digital cameras but have found this camera extremely user friendly. The quality of the images is fantastic for the price of the camera. It has a great range of features. We have found it perfect for taking photographs of our daughter to create a cheap archive of her first few months and also to e-mail friends and family.

written by Graham Clark. on 19/03/2001

I inherited this camera and I must say was sceptical that Kodak could produce a good digital model. I have continued to be surprised at not only the features that camera boasts for the money but also the quality of the images.
The standard 4mb card is a bit small but I have since purchased a 16mb card that gives plenty of scope -56 images at best resolution.
One must is the purchase of NiMH rechargeable batteries it makes the operational costs very reasonable and takes away the pain of constantly replacing lesser ones away. I have enjoyed long life from the batteries between recharging.
I heartily recommend this model. GMC

The camera's weight is one of the reasons I bought it - some digital cameras feel insubstantial and cheap. Kodak's DC215 has a good solid feel to it.

The battery life is a problem, but better than my brother's Polaroid. I've bought NiMH rechargables (four batteries and charger about $20) and that's definitely a cheaper way to go. Not only do the batteries last two to three times longer on each charge, but they can be recharged 500 to 1,000 times. I plan to buy a "universal" USB Compact Flash connection and that will also save batteries (and speed up downloads). But, if you can only get one -- get the batteries and charger, you'll save money almost immediately.

written by Rusty. on 20/12/2000

Superb value for money, and does not feel cheap. It may only be 1 Megapixel, but that is all
most occasional users will need until technology gets cheaper.
It uses AA battery cells - get 2 sets of NiMH batteries with
charger, and use the LCD only when necessary! A set of good batteries
will last less than 30 mins with constant use and the display on.

My camera has "crashed" once, and only taking the batteries out and
leaving it for an hour would fix it.

Newer alternatives starting to appear on the market, but
don't let this put you off a good camera.

Not bad, but i took it back to the store as i am too much passionate about photo and this camera just didn't do it for me, because of the fixed focus, the focus is always soft, so it's never really on focus except stuff that is close to you.

“We have tried other digital cameras in this price...”

★★★★☆

written by Da Bears Shop. on 17/09/2000

We have tried other digital cameras in this price range - Olympus 360, Hewlett-Packard C20, Fuji DX9 - and found that the Kodak DC215 was the best overall. Although we agree with the other reviewers' "bad points", when you look at the PRICE of this camera all those extras requested would just increase the PRICE! We wish it had auto-focus rather than fixed-focus, but a 2X Optical Zoom is a fair trade off. We purchased this camera for taking pictures of teddy bears for our shop and although we have a good 35mm camera, we needed something to take the occasional picture or two...without wasting the rest of the film with the 35mm. This will sound like an "odd" reason for a recommendation, but the other digital cameras we tried were not as good as the Kodak for the pictures of our teddy bears' "fur" - they looked "blurred/matted", while the Kodak was very sharp...even in the Macro setting. We think the color quality is exceptional - we've never have had to adjust that once on any of the pictures we've taken. Prints at 4x6 are excellent as is 800x600 screen resolution on the 'net. If you think of the Kodak DC215 as the "Polaroid" of the 21st Century - then you will be very happy with this digital camera.

“After spending the day shopping around for a digital...”

★★★★☆

written by Damian Cartwright. on 28/08/2000

After spending the day shopping around for a digital camera, comparing sample photos of the different makes, and checking the features of each camera, I finally settled on this one by Kodak. With a clear photo, good contrast and realistic flesh tones along with the optical zoom facility (as opposed to digital zoom) and an attractive and compact design, this camera was excellent value for money. Having never used a digital camera before, I was surprised to find that I had it up and running within 5 minuets thanks to it's intuitive graphic user interface.
Besides the standard picture size settings, (only 2, 1152x864 and 640x480) and 3 picture compression settings the unit doesn't really offer anything more in picture control. A 'template' option allows a rather limited in use frame to be placed around your composition, and there's a date stamp option.
The power usage of the camera is horrendous, lasting less than 3 hours with the supplied batteries, and the fact that the battery indicator only shows 2 states full/nearly empty, it is very hard to judge just how much battery life you have left. So you definitely need 2 sets of rechargeable batteries.
The software to allow the computer to communicate with the digital camera installed without a hitch, allowing me to use PSP 6 to preview and download the images I wanted. Downloading pictures by the serial port takes around 1.3 minutes per photo, taken at highest resolution and minimum compression. (around a 350k picture) The supplied flashcard allows around 12 photos at this setting. So if you are planning on using a 64MB memory card, the AC power pack is advisable.
The unit allows you to connect it to your TV via a phono type connector, which unfortunately you don't normally get on the back of a TV (at least in the UK), but you can buy a 3 channel phono connector (2 sound/1 picture) to SCART converter from Tandys for around £4, then setting your TV to the SCART input should work. The output is NOT what you would normally get on the built in LCD, but rather requires you to select "review" on the unit to produce a full screen image of the first picture stored in the camera, pressing the < and > arrows allows you to cycle through them, because of this limitation of "Review" output only, you can't use the unit as a cheap video camera.
For the price, the unit gives good quality pictures, without any of the (necessary?) frills you normally get with more expensive cameras. To sum up, a good bye.

“The quality of it's hi-res pictures is good, but not...”

★★★★☆

written by David Rawsthorne. on 30/06/2000

The quality of it's hi-res pictures is good, but not perfect, with a few just-noticeable distortions depending on light angle and strength. I would recommend this for those new in Digital photography, or as a cheap general purpose camera. The price is well suited to those on a limited budget, but plan on buying an AC adapter, NiMH batteries and charger (2 sets would be better) and another memory card - 16MB or more would be the best bet.

The Millennium edition has a USB card reader, so may be good for those that have a USB port, but for close to the same additional money, you can shop around and get a Parallel card reader if you dont have a USB port, or want a bit more flexibility to use it on a few PC's.
