Many people have said bad things about the Orange SPV. I agree I am on my second handset as the first did crash on me however I have downloaded the firmware update on my second unit and have found only one flaw since. You need paitence with this phone it is not for tehno fools how many phones can you download software updates direct from the handset and how many can you surf the web. Perhaps we should look at this as a Pocket Pc with phone functions when you do it becomes a lot easier to use. A… Read Full Review

Written on: 05/05/2003 by Ross Denver. (1 review written)

To the person regarding the ringtones, you can record your own ringtones from CD. You can use activesinc to import a .wav format tune and use it for a ringtone.

As for the person saying you couldn't find the thing for changing over your Sim card details. Go to SIM Manager. you can transfer all your details from your sim card to your phone. Hope this helps.

I have put in value for money as 9 as it is a company phone so I don't really know and the form wouldn't accept text… Read Full Review

Bought one as an upgrade, day one it crashed permanently, took it back to Orange shop and they will not replace it until their technical dept can diagnose the fault (could take forever!!) so one week later I am still without a phone and out of pocket as a result of buying one of these! There is no better 3G Phone available in the market at the moment to compete with SVP. This is the best one available. I was installing all kind of software on my phone in the beginning due to which the phone slowed down or sometime crashed. After all it's a PC. The phone is an excellent piece of equipment if you wish to combine a phone, personal organiser. The phone can seem a little slow, but this is mainly due to the fact that it is a computer rather than simply a phone. Written on: 11/03/2003 by Richard Sum. (1 review written)

The phone looks pleasing to the eye, it is not heavy and fits easily into a coat pocket. The menu system is slow and at times seems almost non-responsive. The camera once connected makes the device clumsy and its picture is unstable..you need a steady hand for this one. Playback of multimedia is acceptable in sound form but the video is 'jerky' at best, leaving playback as a gimmic, and not a usable feature. Written on: 24/03/2003

I agree with a lot of users to say that the spv is poor! We have been testing the SPV as a business phone and are not impressed. Things I noticed: Before the upgrade: the back light would come on at the touch of of any button, the battery life was poor. After the upgrade: back light problem resolved but was finding that I was answering incoming calls just by trying to take it out of it's case. The internet explorer would crash when trying to cancel a connection (take out the battery), signal strength was very weak in places where it was stronger with other models. Switching network providers was a nightmare (tried it in the UK, Ireland & Switzerland). In the UK I was receiving a SIM manager error asking me to turn off the radio etc (radio wasn't even on --- take out the battery). Ireland was poor and found that some calls were being terminated which was depressing. On the features front, the keys are small and it's not easy when trying to compose any type of message. The display is very good and navigation is easy (just takes a bit of getting used to). The sound and playback from the media player were very jumpy and having the camera is a waste of time. I won't go much into the media side of things because I feel these are gadets that kids love to have. The fact that you get a case for the phone but you have to carry the camera in one of your pockets...hhmmm. On the calendar and tasks side of things, I found the SPV very good. Syncronising between outlook and the SPV is fast and reliable and does the job very well and that's about it. Pity about the applications side of things and I'm not prepared to hack the phone to get it the way I want it. All in all, I still don't want it. If you going to use it as a business phone, it's unreliable, unstable and requires upgrades. The keys are too small and it's not easy to move quickly around the keypad (the list goes on). But if you like a colouful display, taking photos (good lighting required) and do not need it as a business phone, it's probably a good buy. The price is fair. The SPV is still more on the mobile phone side of things than a pda but in saying that I had most problems trying to use it as a mobile phone. But then again, that's my opinion, other users say it's cool etc. I think not. Time to have a look at the P800.

I got this phone last week with great expectations, but sadly i was greatly dissapointed. I will firstly tell you the good points. The features are ace, media player is a huge bonus allowing you to play mp3s, watch videos (low quality). The ringtones are extremely good quality but i recommend finding your own as the ones that are preset are absolute tripe, quite why they've done this i dont know. Now, i have an 8meg memmory card in it, so uploading a wav. file would be impossible, unless its converted, but in the Active Sync program, i can find music-files that can be converted. Excellent phone. Stops me being bored on long train journeys. A few minor annoyances, like it slowing down at random times, but, hey - it's Microsoft - you have to expect that. Things like All-Explorer and IAAlbum not shipping with the phone for free is a bit annoying. That functionality should be provided with the O/S as it is in all other versions of Windows. Hi,
<br>I've recorded stuff that i moved to that folder and it still wouldn't play. To solve try opening the recorded .wav file in sound recorder (on a PC) and go to save as then change the format to PCM. Then move it to the Sounds folder (on Phone) as above and it should be an option as a ringtone.

I found out how to add your own sounds. Go to the Club Smartphone site at Mictrosoft and take a look:
http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone/club/support/support_question.asp?cid=2&tid=1&qid=1
or follow these steps:
1. Connect the Smartphone to your desktop computer by using a USB connection.
2. On your desktop computer, copy the sound file you want. The file format must be .wav or .mid.
3. In ActiveSync on your desktop computer, click Explore , double-click My Smartphone , double-click IPSM , double-click Application Data , double-click Sounds , and then paste the sound file into the Sounds folder.
Good luck!

I personally think this phone is the best out there now after considering all the features and value for money! That's the joy of this phone - you don't need ringtones (well, not in the traditional sense).
All you need is a PCM .wav file. Then you can use anything as a ringtone (without have to pay a premium rate phonecall - or trawl the web). Perhaps record your mate saying "pick up the phone", and associate that "ringtone" with his number - an away you go - everything he rings, you he his dullset tones telling you to answer.
Your ringtones are only limited by your imagination (and access to a PC, if you want to edit them up)
Check out http://www.modaco.com/smartphone/ for the latest information on how to personalise your SPV. (PS. this website is nothing to do with me - I've just found it useful)

Hi just to comment on your last message about a Beta program. With my SPV SD card ther is a program on their called IA Album which will do all the functions you mention ie backgrounds, pictures etc it also allows you to view, spin zoom any pictures you take by the camera or copied from desktop to anywhere on your SPV using active sync. IA Album will search you phone for all pic automatically. It is only a trial program so when it finishes you can purchase it. Great for customising your background and MMS messages. By the way will anyone send me any great .wav file to mlmeurope@eezenet.com and i will send you what i have too . ;-)

If you go to http://www.ebuyer.com you will find 512mb SD cards. However I am not sure whether the phone supports larger than 256mb. According to Microsoft, the largest is 256mb but that was written in May last year and may not be completely accurate.
If anyone is wanting to test a beta application I am writing that will alow you to easily customise your home screen/profiles sounds, and backgrounds from your PC then email me (spv.configurator@dsl.pipex.net) and I will send you a copy. It should be ready for testing in about two - three weeks.

Ringtone heaven !! First you need to set up Active Sync 3.6 once loaded plug in your phone an open your phone folders and find the sounds folder if not got one the create one but, I wont got into to detail because you can log onto www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone/default.asp and you will be able to find out and print off the directions on how to do it.
Remember the .wav file can be quite big upto 1.5mb for the fancy ones so only put on or two on your phone at the same time otherwise you will slow down your phone !! You can always create a new folder on your desktop and save your .wav files there until you want to swap them, or you can get a bigger SD CARD the cheapest on I have seen is a 256 MB SD card for less than £100 including shipping, log on to www.pricegrabber.com search sd cards and it will list all suppliers and prices. Last note .wav files you can either copy cd music and convert through your burner software any .wav file ? Or you can search your hard drive with the search facility for .wav file beleive me their is loads of stuff or for movies,tv, theme tunes viist www.wavecentral.com See you soon !!!!! ;-}

I not sure if you can still get Orange Everyday 50 which I am on, you get 50 free mins every evening to landlines and then its 1p per min off peak for £15 a month. I also through the day Orange charge about 35p but I can dial off to the landline network with an 0800 number which is free on Orange and it only costs me 5.3p per min peak rate ! I haven't bought mine yet but you can get £50 off when you exchange your old phone with car Phone Warehouse, making it £49.99, which is what I'm intending to do.

Hello reply to your message as regards phone for £50 it's no big secret. I upgraded my orange phone Nokia 7110 as I was out of 12 month contract on everyday 50 for FREE (NO UPGRADE FEE) The upgrade is £99 through their system but on their paperwork they have a base line of £50 but they don't tell you that, so you ask them a few questions about the phone sounding quite unsure whether you should go for it or not. Then considering that they are really trying to push this phone tell them you would really like one and you have been a loyal cutomer for ? long and that all my friends was asking me to show me the phone once I had got it, Hey presto £50 phone, then bought an upgrade pack for £17 from them. Not realising my partner had just bought one for a £5 THEN SOLD MY OLD PHONE AS PAY AS U GO FOR £50 so you could say it cost my £17.63 to be precise. Any questions or you would like to share tips email mlmeurope@eezenet.com

I quite agree, Orange's lowest price is £99.99 on an expensive price plan. I'm very interested to know where you got this for £50 because I had 2 of these stolen 2 weeks ago!!
