Written on: 13/12/2002 by leatherpatches. (1 review written)

My last phone was a Nokia 8310, which had all the usual gimmicks of a high-end mobile phone plus an FM radio. Whilst this is a good looking phone, the software was awful and it was still going wrong after going back to the factory twice. I hear this is not an unusual state of affairs with Nokia phones. So high up on my list of criteria was reliability. Also I need a small phone as I keep it in on vibrate my trouser pocket!. This is partly for convenience and partly because I am a schoolteacher… Read Full Review

Very informative, even though the downsides to this phone (and the network) were heavily stressed. I feel now confident I will purchase the phone and try to utilise the free features until Febuary!

I must admit i've found this review very helpful as I have been debating between this phone and the Panasonic. I think I'll be buying this phone after reading reviews like this and looking at user manual. If anyone's thinking of buying the phone have a look at the full manual online: http://www.sharp-mobile.com/downloads/en/GX10_e.pdf
I would have to agree that the primary bad point of this phone is the fact that you can't transfer images to your PC via cable/infrared. As it costs 36p per MMS message I think the cheapest solution is to create a slide (3 images per message) and, at the very least, you can email yourself 3 photos for 36pence and then distribute via email or print et al as opposed to that price a pop.
Sorry, that's the most helpful thing I can think of!

Stores about 20 large commercial games with nothing else in the memory, but as memory is dynamic having tunes or photos stored reduces game-storing potential. I have about 30 ringtones, 20 pictures and 10 large games stored and the memory is just over 75% full.

The review was excellent. I had purchased a contract vodafone panasonic GD 87 in November and brought it back to Canada to use. It worked fine for 2 months, and then I used it in Singapore for a week. However when i came back to Canada, i used it for a day, and when the battery died and i tried recharging the phone, it kept on saying "sim error." i was wondering if you would have any help on this error message, if you do i would really appreciate it. thanks.

I went with the GX1 with O2, I can say confidently that the GX1 is superior, the gx10 is designed to be portable, and some of the elements that made the gx1 design unique were lost in this
The gx1 is small enough anyways, a slender unflippible phone, but it FEELS better

I believe you're both correct.
The only way I've been able to think about getting around it, by reading the user manual, is to email yourself an MMS of pictures you want to transfer. It's a tad expensive at around 36p per MMS message however, you can create a 'slideshow' and add 3 pictures per message thus 3 pictures for 36p. Not the cheapest option in the world but you can't do it via data transfer to my knowledge. Shame really!

I've bought the panasonic version of this phone also and the're much the same, but I prefer the Sharp GX 10 for the inside looks and the buttons don't feel rubbery. It's quite fast on moving from menu to menu with no ghosting that I can see, no firmware problems (yet) also no data cable out for this and I don't think there will be since it's not a known brand since it's sharp, but it does have a irda and works with my revo plus's phone man pro for sms sending and receving and phonebook The… Read Full Review

Oh me oh my how i regret ever thinking that the sharp gx10 was a good phone. To begin with it is expensive to buy then the servises are expensive then, the casing is as vulnerable as glass, you might as well use it indoors what's the use of such a phone, you make one mistake and it's done for how are you supposed to be comfortable with a phone like that. I beat myself up everyday for buying this phone and giving in to their advertisments it seems that's what vodafone can do better.

- SHARP GX10 IS REALLY STYLISH AND ATTRACTIVE!!!

GX10, Among the best of the colour crop so far.
Faults: Voda have disabled the IR such that you can't transfer pictures, java apps & ringtones with it.
They've Sim locked it so throw that foreign sim card away now.
Disabling functions like this scares me well away from Voda. Goodbye, Voda is the weakest link.

I have to disagree again.
THe Pansonic GD87 has over 65000 colours like the Sharp, it is 16 chord polyphonic, like the Sharp and has a 1mb memory compared to your stated 700mb on the Sharp. I have had the opportunity to play with both and I agree the Sharp IS the all singing and dancing package with Nokia like menus, but I feel the quality all told of the GD87 is superior.

If this Steve guy really works as the manager of a mobile phone shop he ought to be fired. Please don't listen to this man. I don't like to bore you with I am this and I do that, lets just say I have a masters degree in electronic engineering and have had the oppertunity to pull both phones apart for a column I write. The Panasonic is a far lesser product with fairly low compatibility options showing only 256 colours on it's puny low resolution screen. It has a much smaller memory capacity and plays polyphonic ring tones using only four tracks. The gx10 has over 700KB memory a screen more than double the size with 50% higher resolution and over 16000 colours and also plays polyphonics with 16 tracks - A FAR SUPERIOR PRODUCT

my comment is to steve, I own a Sharp GX10 on pay as u talk (£349.99. I think that the sharp beats the panasonic by far, for a start the panasonic gd87 is larger in size (97.5x48x24) and the sharp (94x48x26) has a larger screen, the sharp wins hands down on picture quality. The Sharp GX10 has everything you want in a phone, small size, large 65K pixel colour screen, polyphonic tones, style, picure quality to the maximum etc. Go for the Sharp! you wont regret it!

I am a manager in a mobile phone store, and I can tell you that Vodafone's are very expensive, compared to other connection companies. I know all the tariffs inside out, and although Jam, you think that you know what you are talking about, it seems to me that you've been fooled into believing everything you hear about Vodafone with there marketing, something that is becoming far more common. But hey, you are just a pawn when it comes to these things, and I can tell you how it really is. T-Mobile are the cheapest, and Orange deliver the highest quality service, all my staff would agree, and we sell Vodafone's. I own the Panasonic GD87e, and know all about the Sharp GX10 as I know people who own it, and can tell you that the Panasonic wins hands down. The Vodaphone feels like a toy and scratches like one, something a professional person like me can't stand. Others might buy in to your advice, but if I were them, I'd be researching a little harder, as they will soon see that I am right.

Good points
Fantastic image let down by Vodafone logo in place of Sharp's own. Plastic looking, yet durable flip-action. Excellent menu navigation and awesome text features. Benefits also include built in digital camera and the best WAP browser I've yet seen. Also has Java applications for cool games. Very good standby time.

Bad points Chrome trim scratches in seconds, poor at simple sounds (for text recieving, etc), lengthy power on/off time, poor text capacity (14).

If you think the Sharp is bad you will be crying in your sleep when you get the T100. Very simple and basic apps, only wap based net access, polyphonic ring tones can be barely heard, one of the worst phones I've ever used to txt on (2nd worst is t68i)& only 10 messages can be stored in the inbox. Infact the only thing good about the T100 is the screen.
I have bought/used the following colour screen mobiles, Ericsson T68/i, Samsung T100, Sagem X-5, Panasonic GD67 and my current phone the awesome (but big) Nokia 7650. In my opinion the T100 is a expensive toy and i would be very surprised if anyone buys one now Nokia has the 7210 + 7650 out.

I have used the GX10, one of my friends has just bought it, it is far too flimsy for my needs, and yes, his has already been scratched badly.
However, I bought the gx1, a non flip version of this phone, the whole cover is MUCH sturdyer, never been scratched yet, and the screen is bigger, the only differences is the GX10's java capibibilites and the location of the camera on the phones.
Go with the GX1

so go buy one if thats the only reason stoping you

I have just purchased the Sharp GX10 and would agree with the review, however I feel it would be a downgrade to go to the Samsung T100.
I'm a business journalist tracking the mobile phone industry full time and would say that to date the Sharp GX10 is the best 'live' phone available.
The Nokia 7650, whilst functional is definitely to large to be practical except in business applications. It does not fit in a handbag phone compartment, nor in the average pocket. It is not an attractive piece of equipment to lay on the conference table either.
The Panasonic camera phone is very practical and similar to the Sharp model. My preference however was for Sharp as I felt the picture quality was better than either the Nokia or Panasonic.
In a year we will all be laughing at this discussion as there will always be something better.
Whatever phone you choose, enjoy it!
