“Amazing car”

★★★★★

written by GarethHale on 02/05/2013

I have owned a 53 Plate Mondeo Ghia TDCi 130ps for over a year now, it is seriously the most amazing car I have ever had. The performance is unbelievable for such a large car, it holds the road amazingly well, and you can transport pretty much anything in it! I have driven it 21,000 miles in the past 13 months and aside from wear and tear (wheel bearing and tyres), this car just does not go wrong, it fires up in 1 turn over, even when its -12c outside! The Sony 6CD Player & Premium sound system is unmatched for quality, the bass and clarity is fantastic and it makes any song come to life. Cruise Control is a lovely feature, especially for those 500 mile trips up to Scotland!! Makes the drive so much more bareable! The fuel tank at 58.5 litres will get you apx 602 miles which works out to an average just over 47mpg which is amazing for the size of car and makes stopping to fill up on those long drives a thing of the past (unless your drive is over 600 miles, then you should really stop to have a break anyway.....) Fold the rear seats down and the whole back is level and you can put anything in there, I have transported beds, mattresses, tables, chairs, chest of drawers and wardrobes with ease!! Gives you approximately 200cm in length from front seat to the boot door. Performance is outstanding, 0 - 60 takes roughly 8 1/2 seconds, but the real icing on the bun is 40 to 70, as thats a quite common acceleration, it takes around 3 1/2 seconds and makes almost any overtaking manouvure safe and easy. Back up sensors are a must, sometimes you could be reverse parking into the bay and it can be extremely hard to see a car in the mirrors, especially if its a small car as the mirrors on the Mondeo are really small, however Ford have you covered and provide them on some models of Mondeo. Automatic Wipers, Automatic Headlights, Automatic Nighttime Dimming Mirrors, Cruise Control, Air Conditioning, 6-CD changer, Electric heated seats, Electric mirrors, electric seats, electric windows in the front & back..... need I go on? Just avoid filling up at Supermarket filling stations and remember it requires Semi-Synthetic oil, and this car will keep a smile on your face for a VERY long time.

“Injector pump problems”

★★★☆☆

written by mb1963 on 31/03/2013

I have owned a low mialage 05 plate for four months now and will have to shell out at least £1300 on a new injector pump and injectors. Seems the problem is that the pump breks up which embeds bits in the injection system rendering it useless. This seems to be a common problem one which i was not aware of as the older Mondeos were work horses and one with 75k on the clock as mine did would give you years of trouble free motoring. Ford have deffinately dropped one on this model and i would not recomend anyone buying a simular vehicle regardless of the mialage.

“Warning extremely dangerous power lost when overtaking. ”

written by on 03/04/2012

Do not buy these cars second hand they are death traps.I am experienced driver with 35years driving experience owned and driven every conceivable type of Car, Van, with all engine confiurations and diferrent fuel types. My Ford Mondeo is a 2003 TDI 130 regularly serviced that I have owned for 18 months. I commute 750 to 800 miles a week from Portsmoth to Brentford using A3M - M25 - M4. I have had the Turbo, and injection sytem deep cleaned which made the problem go away 80 % of the time. But now the problem is back again the Car will cut out and lose 90 % of its engine power at a critical time when you are in an overtaking situation. The only way to temporarily gain a slight increae in Limp Mode is to switch the igniton key off anf on very quickly whilst still travelling on. I have been told that a sporting drive (ie high revs now and then through the gears) clears the soot build up in the Turbo. The problem apparently is caused over a period of time when you do long staedy Motorway miles. Otherwise the handling and fuel economy is superb.

Get your injectors reconditioned. Will cost about £75 per injector if you check the net. Make sure you put them back into the same cylinders or you will have to get the ECU reprogrammed. Irregular fuel flow is causing the pressure in the fuel rail to drop. When this happens, a sensor shuts down the fuel pump. This is then reset by switching off the ignition. It's a straight forward enough job to remove the injectors like taking out a set of spark plugs.

I bought this car from my dad 2 weeks ago,he had the car from new with no real problems.I have had the dreaded glow plug flashing light and the car cutting out.Have changed camshaft and crankshaft sensor but this didn't help, took the car to ford for a diagnostic check, they say it could be a faulty injector or a host of other problems. This model of car is a health and safety hazard and would never recommend or buy a ford as long as i live,in fact they are pish.I only wish i had reviewed the car before i bought it,as my dad had no problems i thought it would be ok.

hi, if the diagnosis code was p.o 251 this says it is a pump problem but it usually is not, it is a injector fault have them checked for back pressure by shopping around you can get them checked for around £15 and if you are lucky you may only need to replace one, new £200 recon £90,second hand £40. these injectors usually do around 130,000 miles.dont give up on the car they really are a good car.if you really dont want the car I may buy it contact me if in good condition.

Duke1098 We have had this mondeo for over 18 months and had eratic idoling all the time a missfire around 1700_ 2500 rpm usual ford lower pulley rumble . Have had numerous diagnostic tests with no correct outcome .Now the heap of cRA_ has starting to cut out as well rac technician told me today my car would not let him access the system to check for fault codes .Also been in diesel specialists for full fuel system check at a price of a new aircraft carrier no fault . WHATS MORE CONSERNING IS THAT FORD HAVE BOUGHT THEIR WAY INTO MOTOR COMPANYS THAT WERE RELIABLE . GIVE THEM 5 YEARS AND YOU WILL SE SAME RELIABILITY PRBLEMS WITH TOP RELIABLE CARS THAT WERE ENVY OF FORD . THATS WHY THEY BUY THEY CARNT BUILD A CAR THEMSELFS THATS RELIABLE. AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT FORD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT LOOK AFTER THE CUSTOMERS THAT YOU CONNED INTO BUYING YOUR CR-P INSTEAD OF TRAINING YOUR SO CALLED TECHNICIANS HOW TO BULLSH1T CUSTOMERS THAT THERES NO FAULTS AT A RIP OFF PRICE . OR BUILD YOURE OWN DIESEL INJECTION SYSTEM INSTEAD OF BUYING DELPH SH1T IF YOURE GOING TO BUY A SYSTEM PAY FOR BOSCH LIKE THE GERMANS DO 90 PER CENT MORE RELIABLE THAN THE SH1T YOU PUT IN . I ALSO HAVE A NISSIAN WITH 100K PLUS ON THE CLOCK AND IT AINT FARTED ONCE IN ANGER SO IT SEEMS THE REST OF THE WOURLD CAN PRODUCE RELIABE MOTORS EVEN THE MALASIAN LOT . RELIABLE FORD B__LOCKS.

I found this review helpful because...it is another case of problems with the diesels systems that Ford have put into their cars. I avoided a ford diesel because a person told me they were not s good as the German diesels I had had. This backs up that advice and I am glad I avoided one.

I have owned my mondeo tdci 2litre diesel for 4 years.First problem that is common with these is duel mass flywheel,i had to replace 2 starter motors before i realised, no problem since at a cost though of 500 for new clutch and DMF.I commute daily and had the shock of my life when in the outside lane M27 the car just died! i lost all power and had to cruise to the hard shoulder extremely scary.Diagnosis was master engine relay fuse, cheap to repair but a very dangerous fault.Good points this car sticks to the road, fuel economy 59.5 extra urban, hugged the road in the snow, great heated screens, i would purchase another very strong work horse ,no black smoke, runs very smoothly, safety aspects good, held the road when idiots are driving .passed all mot's flying colours ,now on 160000 still great.

“I bought my 18month old Mondeo TDCI Ghia X in 2006...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 24/02/2011

I bought my 18month old Mondeo TDCI Ghia X in 2006 with 12k on the clock, to replace my 10 year old Mondeo Mk1. I too had the engine cut out once within the first month of driving it, but it never returned; on the whole the car was ok with plenty of power and would average 450miles on a full tank of Diesel . It now has 75k miles on the clock, I will be trading it in for a newer car this month.
I had the following faults with the car, over the 5 years I have owned it.
Dual mass flywheel broke up - replaced with starter motor, clutch and clutch slave cylinder. £1100
Turbo hose split - Replaced £170 fitted by Ford.
Windscreen washer pump replaced £11 from Ebay - Fitted myself
Both front coil springs broken at different times - £126 each fitted
Gearbox making clunking noise in 3rd and 4th gear when accelerating / decelerating - £130 new gearbox mount fitted - did not fix the issue.
Camshaft sensor faulty causing glow plug light to come on, and engine to enter limp home mode - £25 fitted by myself.
Leaking injector pipe causing diesel to spray onto the engine - £155 fitted
Boot release switch stopped working - Removed and cleaned with switch cleaner.
In the end I lost faith in the cars reliability, although it's a great looking car with good performance I would not buy another one.

i have the same model car on 55 plate it now has 173000 mls on it it had a dmf at 128000 mls but it had not failed it was the slave cylinder bearing your dmf failed at low miles because you drove it to long on low revs you should not let it struggle under 17.5 rpm as you will chew up the dmf as for them beening a bad car my mate has 1 on 258000 miles still running on the same engine and box and his dmf failed at 185000 as we are taxi drivers we still would by this model but they are to old to plate as a taxi now i would give the car 4 out of 5 for bulid and reliability compered to similar vauxhall !! now they are rubbish

Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 130 Ghia
23000 miles when i got it , just turned 80000 miles , First problem to go wrong was at 60000 miles. rear brake caliper needed . Fixed with good friend for around £100 . Second problem 80000 miles was a faulty injector .£30 for every injector to be tested £100 for the new injector . total price for fix about £420 used mobile diesel mechanic. third prob same week 80000 miles power steering failure . New rack £77 installed with good friend . fourth prob same week air bag light fault , £200 Fraud `steering wheel angle sensor and clock spring .
Problems are a pain when you need a car but for the four years and miles I have done I think the car hasnt been too bad over all .Very good on the motorway and good mpg for your money . plenty of power when you need it. 6 speed box is great

I purchased a Mondeo TDCI (Ghia - 2005 - 130 PS - 6 Speed) around 12 months ago. Currently 135k miles, and had to change all 4 Injectors. But recently, leaving work...Started the car, pulled out of the car park, and started driving down hill (not very cold weather), all of a sudden, car loses all power, no steering !!!, looked down at the dashboard, battery light, oil light, and started motor light (far right) all lit up ???. Managed to pull over with very very heavy steering. As soon as i pulled up, started car, ran fan. Now drove for 2 days without this problem (touch wood). Many things ran through my head, had i caught the key with my knee whilst driving and cut the engine off ???. One note, all 4 injectors replaced 5 weeks ago, the first injector (left to right) is sitting in what appears to be a "puddle" of fluid, Diesel ???, Oil ?? Water ???, all other three fine. Apart from the puzzling so far one off problem, cracking car!!!!!.

hi this has recently happened to myself with a 2004 model tdci was driving then suddenly all light and steering went removed from gear and then it burst itno life again itself without warning,i had pushed it into parking bay with great difficulty until green flag arrived, the breakdown came and started car up it was running like nothing was wrong and making me look stupid as it sat idleing, however he made me go too fuel station again for a further 20 litres deisel to add to what i already had so iv now got about 300 miles on the trip system available,as he followed car while i drive in the way he wanted it suddenly then cuts out again and 5 mins later same again, dalm thing,he could not diagnose the problem on the spot.so anyway i left and went from edinburgh to livinston 15 miles apart got half way there before it done it again and again shortly after i finally got there to livingston only to be disapointed on my return the car would not now start from key, breakdown comes out again from different garage and again its not a roadside repair they said,so on the back of the trailer it goes on 2 wheels and dragged back to its homebase in edinburgh, got home pushed it and it started up this is the part were the battery light comes on now not like before but now,any ideas what its doing

24,000 miles
These cars are a death trap, they cut out without warning with loss of brakes and power steering, engine won't re-start and flashing glow plug light.
Eventually the car will restart only to repeate the problem a few days later.
Ford garages shrug their shoulders and ask you to park them up next to all the rest, say they found nothing, charge you £350 and let you drive away .
Spent £2350 on new flywheels and sensors to fix the problem , guess what. 100 miles later, cut out on motorway at 70 mph.
I wish I had never seen this car.
£8000 of scrap metal in my drive, Ford can not fix it
Whatever you do do not buy a ford TDCI YOU WILL REGRET IT

PeteJ: I have encountered a similar problem . sometimes the glowplug light will flash which gives you a 'get you home' mode with limited accereration. The second part is a fully on glowplug light which cuts all power to 'save the engine' but nearly kills you if in outside lane onf a motorway doing er-hum 70 mph. For both if you stop the engine the start it again you get back full power.... just don't accelerate too fast. Main dealers took ages to find but it a sensor on the fuel injection system indicationg that your injectors are worn and therefore injecting too much fuel. once injectors replaced then problem resolved... occured at 120k miles, car happy at 142k+ miles. Hope this helps.

Bougth my 130 TDCi Ghia from a dealer. It had about 60000 miles on the clock. Now has 229000 mostly motorway miles. Have had new injectors and a new clutch which I don't consider a problem bearing in mind miles covered. Presently in workshop for investigation of intermittent cold starting problem - fires up, but won't rev!!!
Overall I'm quite satisfied with the car - its my 2nd Mondeo TDCi.
Reading other reviews, my only comment would be - under no circumstances would I use a Ford main dealer for work on the car. They are next to useless and charge astronomical labour rates.

“My 2004 Ghia X estate has 170,000 miles on the clock....”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/08/2010

My 2004 Ghia X estate has 170,000 miles on the clock. It is an ex lease car and has been serviced regularly. It is still on the original clutch and manages around 50mpg on a run, with around 42 in town.
I have recently had to replace the rear wheel bearings, discs, and exhaust.
The only problem that has arisen is that the car occasionally pops out of third gear when coming off the accelerator. Other than these age related problems, I would have no hesitation in recommending one of these cars. I have had four Mondeos over the past 12 years, and have had very few issues with any of them.
As for the cutting out issue, my former employer had a number of Vauxhall Vectras, and they frequently cut out at around 60mph. This problem was finally cured by taking to the main dealer and having the engine management re-mapped.

I have experienced the same problem as the other drivers. The engine cuts out (definitely cuts out rather than stalls) and the glow plug indicator light flashes. The local Ford garage were unable to diagnose the fault, although were happy to charge for replacing various parts, none of which cured the problem.
My car has only cut out above 50 miles about five times. Most other times have been when the car has just started (ususally first thing in the morning, but not always) and the only way I have found to prevent this is to switch from auto to manual, keeping it at a very low gear until I'm on the stright road to work. Very unsettling to know this is a fairly common fault and yet Ford garages seem unable to diagnose/fix such a serious problem.

Does it need a major accident to occur before Ford accept that there is a serious problem and come up with a solution.

Bought a 2002 TDCi Mondeo with 100k on the clock and have had nothing but problems with it. First noticed lack of power, an odd whooshing noise when upping the revs and some stumbling over the autobox selecting third gear - tracked that down to a split Turbo intercooler hose which is a very common problem.
Fixed that problem and now the engine is cutting out sporadically - under high and low revs - which is a safety concern as well as really annoying. Ran numerous diagnostics and got a range of error codes which indicate anything from dodgy crank/cam sensor to failing fuel pump!
Wouldn't touch one again with a barge pole.

Dealer dienies all knowledge, and garage says from diagnostics, its either fuel pump or injectors either one will cost about £1000 with labour...After reading all these reviews, think ill cut my losses and p/x with another dealer and hopefully put it down to bad luck and warn anybody not to touch this model.

How does the TDCi engine compare to standard cars today on the road in terms of pollution per mile driven? I assume it's enormously less, but are there studies of how much less? 30% 60%? 90%? 95%? Any idea or study figures at all?

I replaced the clutch and dmf on my 2004 Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel 130 bhp and now it won't start. Turn key and nothing at all, the battery is good, but nothing happens at all. Don't really know where to start now, we've checked all the connections, pipes etc that we disconnected and hopefully we've got them all in the right place. When you turn the key the radio, lights etc all work. Before having to replace the clutch the car was fine, no problems, except for clutch of course. So now I'm thinking it must be the starter motor perhaps but it's hard to get to so will have to remove the radiator and part of the front to get to it. Can some kind person give me any tips as to what I can do to find out the problem or any sort of information that would help me please? Thank you for your help.
