I had become very dissatisfied with most of the car hire companies in Spain mainly down to the car quality being poor and rip off insurance charges. The pleasant surprise is Drivalia’s cars are in the main low mileage new cars and in good clean condition. Staffs are polite, friendly and helpful. “A very hard sell on their insurance, be warned!”

I can't believe that this company has such a good review rating!!! Perhaps they've got better since March 2015? When we went to collect the car at Alicante in March this year, I told the lady at the desk that I had a car hire excess policy, and was more than happy to pay for any damage and claim back later on the policy. Of course our staff have to ensure that you are aware of your obligations and responsibilities if you choose to book one of the low cost packages which does not include full cover. As many of our customers will sadly know, on occasions we have seen issues where certain things or situations have been excluded from policies purchased elsewhere and so we have to be sure that you understand what you are responsible for here if you choose not to take our full cover.

We will pass on your feedback to our management as we certainly never want customers to feel duress during their check-in procedure.

“I feel we were ripped off and abused by Drivalia ”

We rented a car from Drivalia in Alicantre on Oct 28th 2015 . We booked on the internet . We had arranged our own excess insurance . On arrival at Drivalia office the attendant offered us excess insurance and since we had our own sought our credit card to block 1200 euro saying this was essential since we were not buying their insurance . They insisted our credit card was not operational and since it couldn't be used to guarantee the 1200 euro we would have to buy their insurance at a cost… Read Full Review

Thank you for renting a car from Drivalia and also for taking the time to leave feedback. You clearly feel strongly about the situation but please allow me to explain a few points.

As you correctly said, you have a choice when you arrive to either take our full cover which removes all risk or to leave a deposit and accept the responsibility for the excess/damages. This should not have come as a surprise because all booking agencies make this very clear to clients and if you have purchased insurance elsewhere then the company you purchase this with should have explained to you that this is a private contract between you and them meaning that it does not remove your responsibility for the hire car. You have to leave a deposit, pay for any damages and then later deal with your insurers to reclaim any charges subject to whatever conditions and level of cover you have.

Whilst most of our clients either contract our cover or take our all-inclusive package for the peace of mind that it ensures knowing that they are never responsible in any case for any damages etc, indeed our of the often hundreds of clients that we attend on a daily basis there are a number who choose to assume the risk and leave a deposit. I can assure you that in no way do we ever try to force insurance sales by somehow pretending a card is not working as you seem to imply in your review.

Whilst I do not have details of individual customers here I can say with confidence that the only reasons cards are declined is if a) there is an issue with the account or b) there is a physical issue with the card such as the chip and pin system. We have no technical issues that have been reported in recent months and whilst I can understand that it must be frustrating to hear one story from us and another from your bank I can assure you that there would have been a reason. Naturally if the machine declines a transaction we have no control over this. If however there is an issue with our machine and for any reason (such as a connection problem) the transaction cannot proceed the operative is given a message with instructions how to proceed (by telephone or manually). Therefore in the unlikely event that the problem is our end we know about this.

To address another issue, if a card is a "pin" card we have to process the transaction with a pin number for security. Due to the amount of money in question a signature is a very old and outdated way of processing transactions and often just not possible with many cards. If it is a possibility we will offer this. For example on occasions a customer does not know their PIN and on some transactions the system will offer us the option to bypass this which we can do but on many cards this option is not presented to us and if this is not an option we cannot do it:

I am confident that if there had been any way to "force" the transaction my colleagues would have done this for you but if we attempty a transaction and the card simply declines or fails then this is not something we have control over.

We apologise if we were unable to offer an alternative but this matter sadly would have been completely out of our control.

Just back from a six day break on the coast blanca. I'd read some really bad reviews of car hire firms in the area but Drivalia seemed to get consistently good feedback, which turned out to be totally justifiable. We were met within minutes at Alicante airport with a friendly helpful driver. The transfer took just a few minutes. Check-in was painless. Although our Ultimate All-Inclusive package (which I presume you booked) is not always the "cheapest", at least not on the face of it, it certainly offers what we believe to be the most honest and transparent package that we know of and with none of the added extras which often make "cheap" deals turn out rather expensive.

When we launched Ultimate we didn´t think in a million years it would be so popular but it was something that we believedin by our company values - honesty and transparency. Of course it´s not as cheap as some of the lowest cost deals but what you see is what you get - a full and final honest and realistic price with no hidden extras or surprises.

Sadly due to a number of influencing factors the car hire industry in Spain has become flooded with low cost deals which now customers have come to believe reflect the true cost to hire a car. Realistically is you see 10 or 20 euros for a week you have to know that there are likelyk to be extras or of course if not then in the event of damages the car hire company simply cannot afford to stand the cost. With Ultimate the price is based on the realistic price to supply a car, operate a business and care for our clients. It represents what we believe to be outstanding value and the bold move to launch it has absolutely proven itself to be the right thing to do.

“Deplorable Tactics”

Arrived at Drivalia Alicante in hours of darkness and declined Excess insurance which amounted to around 16 euros per day as we are in Spain for over twelve weeks a year and cost would be prohibitive. Explained that we had an annual Car Hire excess policy. Agent had to phone manager to identify a car which could be out for the 19 days required as most cars were turned over for short term hires. At Drivalia it is rare for a customer to be unhappy and although we do not have specific information here in this department we are aware in general of this particular case and I know that it has been dealt with privately between the customer and the company.

To reitterate in general however, when customers hire cars from us they have a choice to book our Ultimate rate where there are no excesses and no need for any other insurance or to book a low cost package whereby the client can either leave a deposit and take responsibility for damages or choose to add our full SCDW cover.

Our car checking process is very thorough and we are extremely confident in the accuracy of the damage report provided with every car. Nevertheless we always encourage customers (and this applies wherever you hire a car in the world) to cross-check the list of damages provided with the car and satisfy yourself of the condition. This way, in the event of any new damages everyone is sure that they are new. We of course know from our records but things do happen when cars are parked or without the customer knowing and then later it is naturally hard for anyone to accept responsibility. This is just human nature especially when you are not aware of how it could have happened.

I should say in our defence that the overwhelming majority of our cars are brand new with very few km. On this particular car the vehicle infact had 23000 km (and now at the end of the rental life) rather than the 47000 mentioned in the review, quite possibly an innocent oversight but clearly we like to be fair and ensure people know the truth which is that we do frequently replace our cars and have amongst the newest fleets in teh area.

Finally with regards to fuel, we do offer (like all companies) a full to empty package where the car is discounted on the condition that you buy a tank of fuel from us but most of our pakages are full to full so you simply take and return the car full, thus only paying for the fuel you need in a petrol station.

First time car rental customer. Very pleased with overall service. Driver of transfer bus to car hire office was very good at explaining directions for when leaving and returning car. Easy to get to motorway from car hire office and to return the car at end of rental. A friend has just bought a place in Murcia and hired a Fiat 500 for a few days. She has her own insurance so did not take out the insurance the company almost insist that you take out with them. Although we don´t have access to personal details in this department we always take negative reviews seriously and although it is very hard to track down details from an anonymous site like this we have spoken with head office to get their version of events.

Based on your description of the events and the fact that issues are rare, the staff were able to recall yoru car return day and inform us a little about what went on. We have been informed that the car you hired was actually a new car so there was no question of any pre-existing damages. Despite this when our staff informed you that there was some damage to the vehicle it was met with hostility and a gentleman in the party was very reluctant to listen to our reasoning.

I can assure you that the manager in question would never have been "aggressive", in fact the depot manager in Alicante is an extremely sympathetic chap and infact every day most of our clients comment on his warm, outgoing and welcoming reception although being Spanish can be very excitable in his expression but certainly doesn´t mean anything bad by this natural enthusiasm in his speach.

It is unfortunate that you sustained a damage but on our basic packages we do have to charge for all damages, however small because we simply cannot sustain these costs ourselves and when we sell the cars or return them to manufacturer we are heavily penalised for every tiny damage.

If you book directly with us on our Ultimate package there is no need to worry about any damages as we cover all costs but as we do make clear on low cost packages we do have to charge for damages.

I spent hours trawling different hire company sites. Not having a credit card was starting to seem a problem, as many wanted a hefty deposit against one. Car hire can be a minefield in Spain, often with "low cost" deals turning into very expensive deals by the time you pay for all of the extras. Ultimate was designed to offer a complete package with peace of mind and a fair and honest price (where the price you see is all you pay). This package is now our most popular, firstly because most people do understand that 20 euros a week for car hire just isn´t what you pay and they appreciate the real price at the start and secondly many people like yourself either are unable to , or simply don´t want to leave huge deposits.

The Citroen Picassos are indeed lovely cars and where possible we try to make sure that our higher group cars have as many optional extras as possible just to make sure that your car hire is as enjoyable as possible!

I have used Drivalia on a few occasions as I go out to Spain twice a year and I have tried most of the car hire companies but although they are offsite it is still a lot quicker than waiting in the long ques at the airport. The staff are very proffesional and the cars are always in A1 condition. One note to take into consideration is take out the fully inclusive insurance when you book . Recommended by a friend and found that a Kia Sportage was the same price as some of the lesser models from other suppliers. And all the extras were included (CDW, unlimited mileage/kilometers, etc). Process of booking was online and very easy. Pickup from airport was fast and efficient, as was the actual collection. Drop off was easy too. Staff spoke several languages.
