“Its a worry”

Written on: 09/11/2013 by carolb55 (1 review written)

Tried my cat on Advocate. 11 yr old part persian. She was off her food, lethargic and developed a type of cough. She was very active before and loved her food. I thought she must have eaten something off so just watched her and she came good. Not realising that it may have been the Advocate I have just given her a second dose. Exactly the same reaction. Now in the second week after applying advocate she is getting better sowly. I will never use this product again… Read Full Review

My 8 year old Persian had Advocate 3 days ago and after 24 hours was off his food, lethargic, anxious and has diarrhoea...completely out of character! I will never use this again and hope that he turns the corner as this is not good!

Hello, I have recently homed a 4 year old rescue persian. I'm due to take him to the vets tomorrow for check up and to get some advocate as that's what the vet recommends. They don't do frontline anymore. Can I ask what you now use and is your cat an indoor cat? Mine has only been outside twice but is mostly indoor.

Thanks,

B

Visit to the vet cost me £47 today. My cat has a hypersensitivity to the Bob Martin all clear spot on. It has been reported that she has allopecia and lesions all over the body. Temperature of 39.3 and anxious. No flea dirt evident but combed out a lot of dried skin. Given colvasone steroid injection and another visit and I guess more money on Friday. I shall definitely be taking this further in all directions and looking at other posts and reviews there are plenty people who feel the same.

Was advised to use advocate on all my cats because of the one that has allergies. I have two cats already a domestic short hair who has skin allergies, rodent ulcers and a siamese cross british short hair both girls. I religiously used frontline until I got my ginger kitten who is fourteen weeks old, he came to me covered in fleas. I didn't realise how bad until the vet treated him and literally within the first few hours the fleas were dying and falling off. By morning the advocate had killed… Read Full Review

I used Advocate on 4 of my cats for years without problems, adopted another cat last November. Used advocate on her as she had fleas (not a great infestation). She reacted by scratching herself raw where I had applied the advocate. Developed a nasty rash. I spoke to the vet who doubted that the Advocate caused the reaction, but she did start scratching where I had applied it on the back of her neck so there is no doubt in my mind that it was the advocate causing this. I guess some cats have a bad reaction to it. Have not used advocate on her since, but will continue to use advocate on my other cats as they have never had a reaction to it.

we have two kittens and used advocate for the first time after being given it by the vets but the male kittens fur fell out and his skin is scabby and red. my female kitten it must of touched her collar as it melted the safety catch shut also sticking her fur to it so it pulled every time she moved, luckily we noticed and cut it off. both have really red patches now, will definitely be sticking to frontline in the future.

My five month old kitten also lost fur at the site where the product was applied within 8 hours. She seems mostly ok otherwise, but I think her skin is itchy and sensitive. I definitely agree that this should be a side effect mentioned and explained by Bayer.

“Not as good as Frontline”

Written on: 26/04/2013

I have always used Frontline which I got from the vet and it was great. Never had any trouble with fleas on my cat. The vet has now changed to Advocate and I am covered in bites. I have had to spray the furniture and soft furnishing which I have never done before. I can only think that the vet has now gone for a cheaper option, but it simply does not work. “Advocate caused very nasty side effect”

Written on: 17/10/2012 by leasa (3 reviews written)

My vet prescribed Advocate for small cats, for my cat Frappe, within 2 days she had a large open sore on the dosage site on her neck. Consumers are led to believe by both my vet, and Bayer's own test findings as published on the website, that side effects do not exist. But the product seemed to literally burn a hole in her fur and skin. As for the fleas, she's never had them in the 6 years I've had her, but the vets still push you to de-flea them...must get commission for selling it. Will never… Read Full Review

I bought advocate for the first time and noticed that the one 6month old cat had scabs on his head from scratching and a round wound where I had used the advocate. We had been on holiday and I thought it was a flea allergy or mites, took him to the vet and he looked for mites and ringworm but it was none of these, he suggested putting on another dose of Advocate. Four days later he now has another bloody wound again where I put the stuff on, so now I am convinced he is reacting to that. I even changed his food thinking it was a food allergy. The other four cats are fine with it.

I really hope you get a better response than I did, they told me that side effect did not exist, and that it must a coincidence and caused by something else. She'd had it before shortly after using the product but not as bad. I feet so guilty that I did that to her! But we shouldn't, we were trying to look after them as best we could on vet recommendation. I hope your kitty heals quickly x Frappe healed and the fur grew back.

Hi!
It healed within a few weeks, and took about 2 months after that for the fur to grow back.
I was using damp cotton swabs with aloe (bought from pets at home) for a few days just to keep it clean and stop it itching. Hope your cat heals as well as frappe did x

I am afraid there is no product safe for ALL cats.
I am reading this board because I am trying to decide anti-flea product for my tom cat after his sister (both are 3 year old healthy cats) had a serious adverse reaction to Frontline spot-on application. I treated them both the same day two months ago (home cats, but fleas managed to infest the house this summer, I was the culprit for sure since I am the only one who ventures outside the house), and 48 hours later she had her first epileptic seizure!!
Right after the application, she was drooling and had occasional foam in her mouth, but I hoped it would go away since it is described as a mild adverse reaction to Frontline in some cats. How could I know it will turn out to be so serious! I washed the product off her the next day when I realized the drooling had not stopped , but soon she had her first convulsion and continued to have seizures every 2-3 hours. Horrific experience! Of course, we rushed to the vet clinic, she was put on Phenobarbital and got better very soon. No seizures any more, vet is cutting the dosage slowly, she is optimistic and believes the insecticide was the cause of seizures so we hope for the best. No flea products for my female cat anymore, I don't care what active ingredient they are based on! As she already shown to be hypersensitive to one active ingredient, no way I will gamble with her life hoping she will be o.k. with the other. Fleas did not try to kill her as chemicals almost did.
Her brother was fine from the beginning, no adverse reaction, except that he still has fleas! He received two treatments (frontline combo: finopril + S-metophrene) all ready, but I still find fleas alive and kicking in his fur. So I concluded our population of fleas must be resistant to finopril - active ingredient in Frontline. That is why I must try something else for him. Of course, as she is off any possible insecticide for the rest of her life, she is now treated old fashion way: bathing and combing , which she luckily enjoys :) . I now find less fleas on her than on him! He is the carrier and the host for fleas now. I consider Advocate for him, to try something that will be able to kill our population of fleas . Frontline is for far too long in use in my country, so I believe much of the fleas are now resistant to it. In the meanwhile, the house is thoroughly cleaned, vacuumed, their beddings washed every 5-7 days. No infestation any more, but we must try to eradicate them somehow. Since he hates water but can tolerate chemicals pretty well, I hope!, I am looking for some different spot-on product to treat him with.
Conclusion: nothing is safe for all cats, we just need to be very cautious and learn from experience. Read, observe, react on the first sign of trouble and think of safe solutions for your particular cat. They are all different, like we are. I myself tolerated antibiotics very well till I was 32. And then ended up in the hospital for severe allergic reaction to cephalosporin. Now I have limited options of antibiotics when ill. It just happens, nothing can be 100% safe and 100% of the time. It depends on so many unknowns in our organism that we just can't be certain of safety of any chemical that we use on us or on our cats.

i got a kitten a few months back and he had fleas so i bought some frontline. i had used frontline in the past on my other cats with no problem. but when i applied it to my kitten he scratched like mad for 3 days and he still had fleas, he was also vomited 2 days after. i waited a month and applied another dose of frontline, again he scratched like mad for 3 days, and vomited 2 days after and yes he still had fleas. i could see the poor boy was getting depressed with it all. anyway i did some research online and found that the reviews for frontline were quite poor. it seems frontline is not so good anymore. i waited another month then took my kitten to the vets, he recommended frontline combo. i told him i had read reviews and it seemed like it wasnt a good product, what other products do u have? he said advocate. so i went with that. the vet tried to push me to buy the fronline combo, i think that since the sales of frontline have gone down they are paying vets to endorse it. but in my opinion why endorse a product which simply doesnt work? anyway applied the advocate to my kitten, he scratched twice that day. the next day the scratching had stopped and there were dead fleas all in his bed. i checked him over with a flea comb and nothing. advocate a great product and i cant recommed it enough.

Of course vets will recommend it as it can not be obtained over the counter at a shop, unlike frontline. Until recently vets sang the praises about frontline, but when it became available at supermarkets at a much lower price than vets were willing to sell it for they suddenly decided that the product was no good and began to recommend Advocate. Surprise surprise!
