advocate....the best product i have ever used. i got a kitten a few months back and the poor mite had fleas. i went and bought some frontline as i have used this in the past with my other cats and had no problems. i applied the frontline to my kitten and he scratched like mad for 3 days, vomited 2 days after the application and he still had fleas! i left it a month then applied another dose of frontline. again he scratched like mad for 3 days, vomited 2 days after application and yes he still… Read Full Review

“Advocate caused very nasty side effect”

Written on: 17/10/2012 by leasa (3 reviews written)

My vet prescribed Advocate for small cats, for my cat Frappe, within 2 days she had a large open sore on the dosage site on her neck. Consumers are led to believe by both my vet, and Bayer's own test findings as published on the website, that side effects do not exist. But the product seemed to literally burn a hole in her fur and skin. As for the fleas, she's never had them in the 6 years I've had her, but the vets still push you to de-flea them...must get commission for selling it. Will never… Read Full Review

I bought advocate for the first time and noticed that the one 6month old cat had scabs on his head from scratching and a round wound where I had used the advocate. We had been on holiday and I thought it was a flea allergy or mites, took him to the vet and he looked for mites and ringworm but it was none of these, he suggested putting on another dose of Advocate. Four days later he now has another bloody wound again where I put the stuff on, so now I am convinced he is reacting to that. I even changed his food thinking it was a food allergy. The other four cats are fine with it.

I really hope you get a better response than I did, they told me that side effect did not exist, and that it must a coincidence and caused by something else. She'd had it before shortly after using the product but not as bad. I feet so guilty that I did that to her! But we shouldn't, we were trying to look after them as best we could on vet recommendation. I hope your kitty heals quickly x Frappe healed and the fur grew back.

Hi there, ive just noticed the same thing as you describe on my cat and was wondering what action you took? Did it just heal naturally i did you need to see a vet or take some other action like bathing thoroughly? Also how long it took to heal?
Cheers

Hi!
It healed within a few weeks, and took about 2 months after that for the fur to grow back.
I was using damp cotton swabs with aloe (bought from pets at home) for a few days just to keep it clean and stop it itching. Hope your cat heals as well as frappe did x

“Advocate does NOT work”

I am afraid there is no product safe for ALL cats.
I am reading this board because I am trying to decide anti-flea product for my tom cat after his sister (both are 3 year old healthy cats) had a serious adverse reaction to Frontline spot-on application. I treated them both the same day two months ago (home cats, but fleas managed to infest the house this summer, I was the culprit for sure since I am the only one who ventures outside the house), and 48 hours later she had her first epileptic seizure!!
Right after the application, she was drooling and had occasional foam in her mouth, but I hoped it would go away since it is described as a mild adverse reaction to Frontline in some cats. How could I know it will turn out to be so serious! I washed the product off her the next day when I realized the drooling had not stopped , but soon she had her first convulsion and continued to have seizures every 2-3 hours. Horrific experience! Of course, we rushed to the vet clinic, she was put on Phenobarbital and got better very soon. No seizures any more, vet is cutting the dosage slowly, she is optimistic and believes the insecticide was the cause of seizures so we hope for the best. No flea products for my female cat anymore, I don't care what active ingredient they are based on! As she already shown to be hypersensitive to one active ingredient, no way I will gamble with her life hoping she will be o.k. with the other. Fleas did not try to kill her as chemicals almost did.
Her brother was fine from the beginning, no adverse reaction, except that he still has fleas! He received two treatments (frontline combo: finopril + S-metophrene) all ready, but I still find fleas alive and kicking in his fur. So I concluded our population of fleas must be resistant to finopril - active ingredient in Frontline. That is why I must try something else for him. Of course, as she is off any possible insecticide for the rest of her life, she is now treated old fashion way: bathing and combing , which she luckily enjoys :) . I now find less fleas on her than on him! He is the carrier and the host for fleas now. I consider Advocate for him, to try something that will be able to kill our population of fleas . Frontline is for far too long in use in my country, so I believe much of the fleas are now resistant to it. In the meanwhile, the house is thoroughly cleaned, vacuumed, their beddings washed every 5-7 days. No infestation any more, but we must try to eradicate them somehow. Since he hates water but can tolerate chemicals pretty well, I hope!, I am looking for some different spot-on product to treat him with.
Conclusion: nothing is safe for all cats, we just need to be very cautious and learn from experience. Read, observe, react on the first sign of trouble and think of safe solutions for your particular cat. They are all different, like we are. I myself tolerated antibiotics very well till I was 32. And then ended up in the hospital for severe allergic reaction to cephalosporin. Now I have limited options of antibiotics when ill. It just happens, nothing can be 100% safe and 100% of the time. It depends on so many unknowns in our organism that we just can't be certain of safety of any chemical that we use on us or on our cats.

Having read the previous review where someone said that 'Advocate' is dangerous and it made their cats hair fall out, I seriously have to say, that I think this is a case of the cat maybe having an allergic reaction - pretty rare. I have 5 cats ageing from 10 to 6 months and have always used 'Advocate' on them all! This is the best duo flea/worming product available and I buy it from my vets every month. It is highly recommended over 'Frontline' and other flea treatments. I have had no… Read Full Review

Of course vets will recommend it as it can not be obtained over the counter at a shop, unlike frontline. Until recently vets sang the praises about frontline, but when it became available at supermarkets at a much lower price than vets were willing to sell it for they suddenly decided that the product was no good and began to recommend Advocate. Surprise surprise!

Sorry for the loss of your cat, that is dreadful. But I really don't think that Advocate was the culprit :/ Advocate is used by thousands and the vets would not sell a product that harmed cats. It has to be tried and tested thoroughly, else they would seriously be facing a law-suit! I really believe that your cat was ill for another reason and it just coincided with using the Advocate...a coincidence. Or she had an underlying condition that the Advocate interfered with, maybe? It seems extreme what your cat went through and surely there was more to it than using Advocate. I have 5 cats and have always used this product and I have never had a problem with them being ill, or even slightly off in there mood! There is nothing else on the market as good, and that really kills fleas! And the added wormer and ear-mire control is a Godsend! I do sympathise with your case and wish any cats you may have, better health in the future.

Zemphyra's Response to catthing's Review

Written on: 07/09/2014

I gave my cat Advocate, within a day she was not well. The next day she was drooling (the drool was like thick like mucous) and it had flecks of blood in it. The smell of her drool was, I can only describe it as being like sort of odd chemical as I've never smelt anything like it before. I rang the vet and they asked me to check if she was dehydrated. She wasn't so they asked me to bring her first thing in the morning. So first thing I took her to my vet and they said she wasn't dehydrated yet, but they would have to give her fluids. My cat wasn't acting herself. Her voice was hoarse, she kept lying in one place and she couldn't eat or drink though she clearly wanted to. She would walk to her favourite foods I had put out, put her head down and give her food a lick and then walk to the other bowl and do the same and go back and forth between the bowls. She also threw up that first day this stuff that was very dark brown in colour and had that awful smell - not one of rot or infection but one that was chemical in nature. Her breath was found to be laboured. The vet decided to start with X-rays. They found she was constipated and gave her an enema. Then they gave her BIBs which are spherical objects that as they travel through the digestive system and show up on X-ray. She had already had one night of stay in at the vet at this stage but because she wasn't eating at the vet and we put it down to her nervous nature I took her home. Well she still wouldn't eat so I began force feeding her by spoon. The next day she was back at the vet and she hadn't passed all the spheres. They gave her a blood test, it all came back normal. Then they gave her another enema. That afternoon I took her home and the vet told me they could find nothing wrong with her and she was pooping normally again. Well it's been 6 days and I am still force feeding her. I wish I had done my research on Advocate. I love my girl so much. She is my baby. She is not herself. She is bright and looks healthy but she sits in one spot and just can't eat without aid. Please for the sake of your pets, don't use Advocate. It's just not worth the risk. I'm so sorry for your loss...

Can I just say
I've been using advocate for years
Just recently my seven yr old cat has starting having facial twitches
I'm thinking this is a result of advocate as she's gone very sensitive with rolling skin stares into space and runs a mile when you put it on her!!

I've changed now to stronghold
I'm hoping these twitches subside!!!!
And I've not caused any lasting nerve damage

Can I just add that I have recently - in the last 2 weeks use this product for the first time on a healthy cat. Although I too have noticed that it has amazingly erradicated worms and fleas in super fast time the cat has been very tired and listless, eating and drinking very large amounts and them been off its food completly. In the last 48 hours patches of fur appear to have started to fall out. The treatment was applied to the back of the neck where it could not be liked off. Having read the reviews I too am now very concerned.

hi, tesla was 10 years old when she was taken from us, she was a normal size, not skinny but not a large cat by any means.
ive put this warning in a number of places and am getting a lot of feed back, some of the minor things that of heard about and that you should watch for are skin burns on the place where the treatment is put and in some cases all over the pet (dogs and cats), a change in behaviour, reverting to a kitten or puppy state, a lethargic state and going off their food or drinking lots.
really you have to know your pet, some people are not as close to their pets as others and will not notice until it gets bad.
tesla was weighed and given the treatment for a cat of her size and weight by the vet.
im not saying every cat will get ill or die, but knowing this can and does happen i feel someone has to try to warn people.
most of the time when i reply to these and other comments it can get me quite upset but i will keep it up for the sake of my tesla and to try and save even one other cat.
if anyone is reading this because their cat is acting funny, please dont wait to see if they get better, GET THEM TO A VET FAST.
Andy

That's terrible. Many thanks for sharing your story but it is so sad. Their website says "The active ingredient (moxidectin) enters your pet’s bloodstream...to prevent heartworm infection" - that sounds pretty powerful to me and makes me think. I think some cats are OK with moxidectin while others are not. But how would I know whether my cats would be fine or not??

I wish I didn't have to use any chemical on my cats (I used a different product and they have been OK so far. Touch wood). In my experience, a regular bath is a good defense against fleas, but I got my current cats when they were already adult and they had not been brought up with a bathing habit. There are many ill-informed "natural" flea treatments around, too; one example is orange with/without lemon infused water to spray on cats. I cannot imagine they would like the smell. As a pet owner, I agree we should do our home work before administering anything to our feline friend.

Dear Tabboo, so sorry to hear about Tosh. My wife and I wept reading your message, we really hope that he pulls through. It would seem that while many people are fortunate not to experience problems, we are receiving more and more messages from people like yourselves who are not convinced that this product is safe. So many coincidences. And there are alternatives! We now have a new kitten, and have found an extremely sympathetic vet, he has been very understanding, and he has agreed to source different treatments, so far, so good. All I can say is please keep a very close eye on him and keep taking him back to the vets until he improves. Kidney problems in cats can be kept at bay, sometimes for years, with medication and a strictly controlled diet, I have heard from people whose cats have survived for a considerable time after diagnosis. I hope that this is the case for Tosh, please do not give up. I wish you all the best xx

Tosh was diagnosed with some kidney problems and we feared the worse.Advocate was used each time tosh became ill and it was only a matter of days. He is now ill again sitting somewhere cool, drinking lots of water and has not eaten now for two days after being sick. the very same as beforr. we gave him Advovate on the 8th june. what can i say he is a changed cat, The vet says its unlikely to be the advocate but im not convinced.

sorry for being a bit off, as a follow up the vet contacted bayer, the makers of the flea treatment and they claimed their product does not affect the kidneys of cats. i did a bit of research on the chemicals and it turns out they do make the kidneys swell.bayer also paid for all the vet treatment on tesla and also covered the cost of having her put to sleep(killed). this in itself speaks volumes.
i have also been contacted by dog owners that and have been told of burns to the skin, dogs reverting to a puppy like state permently and dogs going quiet straight after the treatment, also the death of dogs.
i think not many people put two and two together after the treatment ie older cats dying.
all in all advocate works, tesla has no fleas worms or tics, sadly she has no heartbeat either.

Hi Andy,

That is totally your choice and I do sympathise greatly with you losing your cat. I have read the statistics and agree the odds are high but as I say, I have 5 cats and my friend has 13 :/ Her cousin has 11. My mum has 4, my other friend has 3 and my aunty has 7....and we all use Advocate with no symptoms whatsoever. So it is a bit weird one! But if you really do believe it was the Advocate that killed your cat then who am I to argue. Maybe I am wrong in thinking this product is totally safe. Just in my experience, and every one I know, it has been safe.

I guess it remains a mystery. But as I say I wish you better joy in the future with any product you use on your cats. Take care :)

“Alergic reaction to advocate flea treatment in cats”

My cat had small sores on his chin and at the base of his ears, they were more crusty than sore and they had been there for some time with out causing him any discomfort, I thought they were from his hunting. I treated him with Advocate as he had fleas, it did get rid of the fleas but after about two days. He had been aloof for a while and about five days after treatment I was shocked to see his head, he had scratched so badly that the top of his head was bleeding and he had lost alot of this… Read Full Review

This product is OK for my generic "moggie" but has brought my Turkish Van Kedisi cross (with a ginger tom) out in a ruddy rash. She became very distressed and agitated and has been off her food for 24 hours. She now refuses to allow to me stroke her and is clearly afraid I will "hurt" her again. Beyer really do need a warning over this, as does my vet - which he will receive.

The maufacturer should clearly state in BLOCK CAPITALS that there is serious risk of adverse reaction to this drug… Read Full Review

I applied this product to my cat of 19 months-he was traumatised and clearly distressed by the product-likewise I found a burning sensation around my mouth and tried to rube water into to his fur to relieve him of this chemical reaction. I will not use it again and I will contact my Vet Surgery as it is clearly not suitable for him.
Your survey above is not appropriate-I would not give it a rating… Read Full Review

I found this review very helpful because...my cat a 18 month Bengal reacted the same way. My adult daughter applied the product at lunchtime, when I got back from work at 5pm he was still reacting to the burn. I applied water to hi nec, and tried milk. After speaking to the vet, I washed his neck with water and then dried it thoroughly. He calmed down eventually. We have used this product before but without such a nasty reaction.

I have been using Front line on our cats for about a year and have found that the fleas just keep coming back - I used advocate on them a week ago and the fleas have completely gone - not even any flea dirt! I didnt notice a smell either. It does cost a little more than other products but its worth it for the peace of mind! I would defiantely recommend this product and will continue to use it… Read Full Review

My cats have always had Advocate and and I have never had any fleas on them. My dog had a dose of it once, she shook herself in my living room and took the colour out of my leather suite where the droplets landed! Apart from that I have been very pleased with this product… Read Full Review

I bought this product for my Bengal after receiving assurrances that the odour would not last longer than two hours (Bayer vet ). I find that after six hours the odour is still there and is offensive to the point of making us nauseous.
When I approached Bayer on this matter I was met with indifference.
I cannot recommend it.
The company should be quite clear on this point in there advertising… Read Full Review

It is a brilliant product and one of the only one my cat is not allergic to. and it is great to have a all in one flea + worm treatment. it doesn't smell like other products do. I give it to both my cats and the smell doesn't make them run away… Read Full Review
