“Don't buy this phone. DO NOT. ”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 07/02/2011

Don't buy this phone. DO NOT.
This phone advertises cool things such as handwriting texts .etc. Really it lacks the basics. The only thing I like about it is the camera.

Otherwise it is a disaster. Touch screen is awful - I have to calibrate it basically every day. They offer you 4 different ways to write a text, and yet I have to use an alpha numeric keypad (like a normal phone). The others take ages. The light flashes telling me I have a missed call/message when I don't.

Worst of all, it turns off, and freezes especially when trying to make a call. Sometimes I have to try calling someone 3 times for it to go through, or I have to take the battery out.

To add to the misery, its on a 24 month contract!

I agree 100% and wish I had seen you review before I got this awful phone. You say you calibrate the phone every day. Tell me, how do you do this? Might help me make this thing work a least a little bit!! Ta

“The stylus on this phone falls out after being used a...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/01/2011

The stylus on this phone falls out after being used a dozen times, because of wear to the internal clip. The stylus hole is on the bottom edge of the phone, so the stylus then falls out. Since the wear is to the phone's innards rather than the stylus, buying a new stylus won't help.
The wrist strap is anchored to a concealed hook inside the phone. The hook is very weak, meaning that the slightest stress leaves you with a broken hook and intact wrist strap.
Every couple of months the email app simply forgets all the accounts. This isn't a simple case of reconfiguring the accounts - it then tries to download all old emails from the server, runs out of space and locks up. Trying to delete emails it had already downloaded didn't work because it got "clever" and assured me that despite me wanting to delete them it would keep the headers because it knew best.
Incoming text messages are timestamped with the time of ARRIVAL, rather than the time they were sent. So when I switch my phone on and get a message I have no way of knowing how old it is. THIS IS PATHETIC!
The touch screen is sluggish and the interface laggy. The menu system is inconsistent... in some contexts you can drag the actual menu to scroll (eg in Contacts) but in some (eg Apps) this just launches the app you touched. The scroll bars are far too sensitive and all too often there's too much content, so that it's actually impossible to see it all as moving the scroll bar a pixel whips the content up and down whole pages at a time.
Despite having installed several software updates since having the phone, they do not take effect. The date of last update is shown as two years ago!
The screen lock/unlock is a slider switch on the side of the phone... a switch even more vulnerable to accidental nudges than a numeric keypad, rendering it completely pointless!
The sensor which tells the phone which way up it is works only sometimes - I have to gently shake the handset so that it notices a change in orientation.
The email app behaves differently just about every day - sometimes automatically downloading everything, sometimes only headers, sometimes going completely manual, and sometimes (mentioned above) all but uninstallng itself.
The controls for menus, camera, etc are all awful. It's been designed with one aim in mind: To make you press lots of buttons. eg. In File Manager, you can view a list of photos. You can tap a photo to view it. (oops - its DOUBLE tap this time... that's another seemingly random arrangement - insome contexts you double tap, in others single.) So, you're viewing a photo in file manager... Can you delete it? NO! Can you move to next photo? NO! To do either of these you have to... TAP the photo to get a menu, BACK UP to the previous level, THEN go ahead and delete or move to next pic. Imagine going through a couple of dozen like that!
To delete all text messages in my inbox is easy. To delete them from Sent Items is completely different. Der!!!
I could go on and on... even a simple thing like making a telephone call is deliberately made difficult. And the apps?? Wow! Imagine this scenario EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU START FACEBOOK: Tap icon. Wait ten seconds. Get asked permission to continue. Tap. Wait ten seconds. Get asked again for permission to continue. Tap. Wait ten seconds. Finally get into app. ooh - I have a message... tap to show it... NO! Doesn't work! In short, this is the WORST phone I have EVER had. I implore you not to buy one, even very cheap second hand. In my honest opinion Nokia and (in my case) Vodafone are breaking UK law by even selling it. It's not "fit for purpose."
(And if a seller would like to argue with this: How about the promise of Facebook widget on desktop that simply doesn't happen?!!)

written by tinam1 on 30/12/2010

I had my nokia 5800 XpressMusic for six months when out of the blue my screen would start to go blurry every time I unlocked my phone. I asked around and found other people who have experienced the same problem with this phone, it not something you would expect to happen with a modern phone. The 5800 does have some good qualities though, like an excellent music player downside is when you purchase songs from nokia ovi store you cannot use them as your ringtones, why I have no idea. It looks stylish and has smart, good sized touchscreen. It also has a decent camera and you can get some cool apps for it, maybe not as many good apps as the likes of iphone but still ok. Overall this phone is alright but there are better ones out there.

“Very Good to Very Bad ”

★★☆☆☆

written by jjav on 28/07/2010

Very Good to Very Bad
Basic features are excellent and if those are all you use, you will like the phone, its a reasonable size with good battery life.Camera & video = very goodMusic player = very goodInternet = good but you may experience connectivity problemsBluetooth = connectivity problems & and the worst thing is that Nokia cant help you and they dont admit to problems, very poor service.Updates & bug fixes from Nokia = lenghthy, taking months with no guarantee of fixes.Touchscreen = Good, but can sometimes be unresponsive (annoying)menus = ok, can be a little lengthysummary = be prepared for one problem or another, even after updating the software, unless you are a basic user and not always connecting different devices etc. Check the reviews to make sure that the functions you want to use are not mentioned by others, as not working. (Nokia disscussions) is a good place to start.I would like to recommend this phone, but I wont. the lack of support from nokia and the delays in fixing software bugs, has meant that I have always had problems, for the last year. I have reverted to using my long standing and probably 1 of The best Nokia phones; The 6300.

“The nokia 5800 express music is a great phone for...”

★★★☆☆

written by Ash Margrove on 13/06/2010

The nokia 5800 express music is a great phone for people who will use it for music or watching video. I say this because its not a great phone to get a long with. It looks very stylish but feel really cheap. There have been some cases were people lose there stylus due to poor plastic quality. The system its self is really buggy. But nokia are bringing out updates to keep it functioning properly. I'm updated to the latest firmware (50.xxxx) And it has fixed a few known bugs and added Kinetic scrolling (Known from the iPhone) The camera on this phone is also really good, It has a 3.2 Mega-pixel Carl zeiss lens. This is really good for taking photos out side or filming out side. I say out side because this brings out the true quality of the camera.
If your looking for a easy to use music phone with a great screen and a decent camera then this is the phone for you.

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 07/05/2010

I can honestly say this is the worst piece of junk I have ever had the misfortune to own as a phone. Within a couple of months of ownership the screen would go fuzzy to the point that eventually the screen disappeared. I would have to lightly press the off switch and the side button to get it to re appear before eventually losing it permanently. I binned it and bought a £10 phone from Tescos to last me until my contract allowed me a new upgrade.

I guess every item that we purchased or bought should have the quality worth of the price. I this concerns, I think the price really worth it.

Now coming to end of 18 month contract. This has been the most unreliable phone I've ever owned. The software often crashes especially after using the navigation system. So much so that I've had to take the battery out & leave it for a while after 8-10 attempts to get the phone to start up again. If you've got loads of names in contact list the touch screen is either too responsive or not responsive enough and takes ages to retrieve the contact. There are lots of features to this phone but it's let down by its unreliability.

written by stillshady47 on 13/03/2010

i bought this phone last December 2009, I'm very disappointed to this phone, i already repair it three times within the month of January 2010, first is the unresponsive of touch features, then the camera is not working and lastly the 8gb sd card was corrupted and they replace it after more than 2 weeks here at Nokia Alabang(atc) in Philippines. all cases where brought at the same Nokia Center. now nokia maps is not working and always " general system error" appear. also i noticed that there is no "mark several" for easy copying or moving of files compare to other brand like Samsung or Ericsson. my phone is updated to latest firmware available in the market. it always hang and need to remove first the memory card before turning it on. on music player, even though i already deleted the file, it still still remain inside the player. cannot remove it anymore.

★★☆☆☆

written by prudent buyer on 01/03/2010

Marginal enjoyment from this one. The touch display was faulty out of the box and therefore rendered the phone useless when needing the on screen dialer to navigate through caller menu's.

Nokia also declined to point out that the once FREE GPS mapping and voice directions from Route66 had been replaced with a £6 per month offering from Nokia.

Why anyone would want to pay £6 for what is mostly available elsewhere for free I have no idea.

Let's hope that Nokia learn a hard lesson from this one.

Impressed with the functionality but not with the phones reliability or value for money.

Nokia had been my favourite but have slipped from the throne with this one.

★★★★★

written by on 28/01/2010

Very good phone. I have had the 5800 for about 5 months and it has proved to be very reliable, has a good battery life and easy to use. I upgraded from a Nokia N70 which I had had for over two years and I just wanted to update. The camera is very good and the external speakers are amazing for a phone like this. Ovi is still fairly new and nowhere near as good as the app store on the iphone but it will improve as more people start to use it. All standard functions work very well and being able to run multiple applications is very useful. Text input can be slow depending on which option you choose but this is due to the nature of the touch screen more than the design of the phone. Very good looking phone and a much cheaper alternative to the iphone as it has many features the iphone doesn't, but does lack the sleekness you get if you have £400 to spare. Got mine free for £15 per month on vodafone, it's about £190 on payt.

Written on: 01/02/2010

Yeah I'd go with that, the camera is good but struggles in a weak lightsource and pushing the ISO up only goes some way towards addressing it - my big problem is I keep sticking fingerprints over the lens but that is my fault!

I don't rate Ovi as much as the standard Nokia PC suite, which is a really nice piece of kit. I know to some extent they serve different purposes but I like the control the old PC suite gives you.
