Howdens Kitchen’s Reviews 2022

What are people saying about Howdens Kitchens

With over 856 5 star reviews, and with 68% of people prepared to recommend them, Howdens has a stellar reputation. Of course, there will always be disappointed customers, but we see a commitment from this company to honour its promises and attempt to remedy its mistakes.

Howdens have an excellent reputation as Kitchen Designers and Suppliers

Howdens is the UK’s No. 1 Trade Kitchen supplier and was awarded the Which Best Buy in 2021 for their kitchen cabinets. And Howdens regularly receives over 80% 5-star reviews for its design, service and installation across its over 700 depots in the UK and Europe

Does Howdens trade only? Yes

Howdens Kitchens have a trade-only sales policy. Which means they only sell to the trade, rather than the public. They say that is to “ensure our products are installed to the highest possible standard. In turn, by using a trade professional, you can be sure that your products are built to last and are fitted exactly the way you want them.”

Why can’t I find price lists for Howdens Kitchens

In the Guardian, a spokesman for the company said: “Howdens' pricing is based on the confidential trade discount that it gives individually to each of its 430,000 trade customers. If and how our customer discloses the discount to clients is for them to decide when they give a quotation for the price of the project.”

Are Howdens kitchens value for money?

With an extensive collection to suit any style, we believe Howdens kitchens offer exceptional value for money, as they can be tailored to suit any layout, size, and budget. Their kitchen cabinets also include a 25-year guarantee, while our kitchen doors come with a 5-year warranty for a robust fit and long life.

“Shoddy products and a lack of customer care ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Carliee367 on 13/03/2024

A full kitchen has been purchased and within 4 month the sink has started to corrode, the paint flake and chip away. The “quality” department has stated that this is due to improper care and the use of harsh substances in the sink which is completely untrue. We have requested a replacement sink which they have refused. After numerous emails, Howdens response has been that “unfortunately there is nothing more we can do for you on this matter” which is simply unacceptable and yet another example of a company avoiding their responsibilities to consumers in order to line their own pockets. From looking at other reviews I am not the first customer to have a substandard product provided and an unsatisfactory response from Howdens towards making amends. Very disappointed with the service and assumptions made to avoid appropriate action. I have since made contact with the “reviews” team so let’s see if they are able to support in finding an appropriate solution, and getting the sink replaced.

Kitchen and bathroom fitter for 28 years,I've never seen a more poorly organized, and lacking motivation company in my life, they laugh at you when the wrong kitchen turns up and you complain, all they're interested in is getting it out,(not on time or the correct kitchen)and then making excuses, not enough, handles, not enough hinges, not even enough end panels, stood in depot,I will name, Bourne, lincs, for 25 mins, before someone served me,two women at the back discussing their weekends,I'm seeking a new company to supply,I think howdens have got way too big for their boots, got need for them there's plenty more kitchen company's in a bloody big ocean, company needs a massive shake up,my last customer got quoted,2,800, pounds less, for her kitchen,I can't compete with that so therefore I will not recommend howdens anymore

“Avoid for your health, well being and sanity .... AVOID !”

written by boCrabtree382 on 17/02/2023

Nightmare experience, copious amounts of damaged items, damaged items replaced with more damaged items, one unit even arrived water damaged, very poor quality overall, the fitter blamed Howdens (Torquay) and Howdens blamed the fitter, I was left frustrated, stranded and unsupported in the middle, he was an awful fitter, he didn't give Howdens a chance to replace all the damaged items and went ahead and installed no end of damaged items with chips and dents galore in my new kitchen, there was no pricing transparency, the depot investigated a complaint I raised internally which was not impartial, the business model puts the customer in the middle and unprotected between Howdens and the fitter, fitters with Howdens accounts need monitoring and scrutiny as the one we had was not good for the reasons outlined and because he also took almost three months on our refit, did not complete the work and would not put right the things he did, he showed hostility and annoyance towards me when I was only asking him to put right the poor jobs he did and said nothing was good enough for me disregarding my right for a good quality undamaged new kitchen, it was a very distressing experience, I wouldn't buy a Howdens kitchen again and can not recommend Howdens based on my experience, I suggest buyers please beware, it was a dreadful experience, and I noticed a culture that makes out the customer is being fussy and expecting too much, vast improvements are needed, having a kitchen refit should be pleasurable and existing but that was not the case, it was instead thwart with anguish and heartache, a sorry state of affairs and one I would hope no one else experiences.

written by MichelleGargan on 11/02/2023

Where do I start ! Ordered items for a utility room from Howdens in the so called sale . Firstly the initial order was taken wrong so had to wait for items missed .I had paid in full for what I believed was my entire order only to be charged an extra £300 because Howdens ordered a standard worktop not breakfast bar which was requested and an extra £100 for a base unit that was also missed off . We had to send worktops back as they were the wrong size ! . Now here come the major issue ….. so in total I paid £2550.00 for 5 x base unit (1000,900,600 and 2 x 500) Sink 1x worktop 1x breakfast bar and backing panel 4x 350 doors 4 end panel and 2 wall panel 2x plinth 2x upstands However We returned Worktop, breakfast bar ,backing panel and 2x up-stands a refund of £527.95 Which means for Sink 2 plinth 5x base units 4 x 350 doors 4 x end panel and 2 x wall panel we have paid a grand total of £2022.05 In a sale ! I’ve been back several times to try to understand the pricing of these items and been told different prices for various items as they were bought as a package in the sale ( pot luck on prices there I believe anyway) 900 unit alone has cost me £362.46 +vat Not sure what Howdens class as a sale but the same item in Benchmarx was £175 + vat In fact priced items at 3 other companies and same order has come to approx £ 1300.00 inc vat at all 3 Still not resolved and won’t be going back to Howdens anytime soon .

“howden kitchen very poor service”

written by 252Hale on 22/12/2022

Howdens are a complete waste of time with regards their kitche ns...all good until there is a problem....their designer and also the manager who checked over everything failed to make adjustments in a island overhang....ends up costing us an extra £750! completely their fault and yet no help at all. and infact silence from them when asked what are they going to do. I was told only told contact their customer service and that was a complete waste of time. This was in Binley, Coventry.

I empathise as we also had a nightmare experience with Howdens Torquay and one of their trade only account holders Jake Cornforth Carpentry Services. They are unique but for all the wrong reasons as they have an awful approach to customer care and view the customer as the third party and show them no consideration or respect. I wholeheartedly agree best avoid if you value your health, well being, sanity, and well earned money. I wouldn't wish Torquay Howdens and Jake Cornforth Carpentry Services on my worst enemy.

Have just had a Howdens kitchen fitted ( Fairford Sage Green) . From start to finish the service I received was excellent. The designer was very patient and provided me with lots of options, no pressure regarding timescales and was happy to discuss what I wanted, what I needed and gave me an outstanding design within budget. Can’t praise the staff enough

Such a sweeping damnation is not helpful because no location is given - Customerjib may not have had the same experience from a different depot. Our builder is not using our nearest one because of Howdens pricing policy - he gets a better deal from another one whose manager bent over backwards to resolve a problem which arose once he started.

“Bermondsey Branch Service ”

★★★★★

written by 4Bell on 03/08/2022

I simply popped in to look at the design that was generated via Croydon branch (builders location). I am based near Bermondsey local branch . I am compelled to name the staff member because he was patient, extremely helpful and engaged as if it was his kitchen. A small galley kitchen that most would roll their eyes because of the intensity and energy I was exerting. Not him, he remained fully engaged and never lost focus. His attention to detail and design overview was comforting and not 'pushy salesmanship. He was not going to make a sale from me, however, his ideas and enthusiasm caused me to review previous decisions. If you are visiting the Bermondsey branch, a quaint, friendly team, but he was the staff member who deserves to be acknowledged by management. He is my plumb line in terms of customer service and is a credit to Howdens.

“Stay clear of Howdens Wandsworth!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Howdens_ruined_Ross on 22/08/2021

Stay clear!!!! Howdens put a credit facility onto my account when I had requested not to have one. They then allowed a random person to access that credit facility (not me) resulting in my account going into default. Howdens then put a CCJ against my name after they had illegally provided a random person access to my unapproved credit facility. This company has very weak processes when it comes to storing, retaining and using personal information correctly and inline with the law and can result in yourself not being able to work if you get a CCJ and are self employed. My advice to all is to not engage with Howdens Wandsworth if you dont have to.

“Love my kitchen!”

★★★★☆

written by Lovemynewkitchen on 14/07/2021

I would recommend Howdens without hesitation. The quality of the various elements (I went for the middle range doors Fairford cashmere) are very good and the design is excellent. With such a complicated project, cupboards, worktops, floors, sinks, taps, lighting ,for both kitchen and utility room there will always be the odd problem but I think the sign of a good business is how quick things are put right. I was incredibly impressed with the speed and good nature that any little thing was corrected, and we are talking hours not days! Given Covid restrictions the showroom experience was as good as possible and I was given plenty of time to make my choices, in fact you are spoilt for choice! The only reason I have not given 5 stars is the sub-contractors they use. There was a problem with the dishwasher which was sub-contracted out and it became far more complicated than necessary. Otherwise, very happy indeed.

“Our cream kitchen is grey”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/06/2021

We've just had a Howdens kitchen installed. We wanted a cream kitchen and the Hockley Super Matt Sandstone seemed just right, judging from the photos in the Howdens brochure and on their website. The kitchen is now installed - and it's grey! There is no doubt about it. It isn't just our opinion. Other people have seen it and said it's grey. Occasionally the lighting conditions bring out a dark beige in the colour, but 95% of the time it looks grey, whether under natural light or electric light. It's actually very similar to the Hockley Super Matt Dove Grey. Under no lighting conditions whatsoever does it ever look as pale as it does in Howdens' photos, so how they managed to pull that off I'll never know. The one thing that we didn't want was a grey kitchen, but that's what we've got. I'm considering speaking to a solicitor about it.

“Highly recommend Howdens Bromsgrove!”

★★★★★

written by Shopperholic53 on 22/03/2021

We've just had a new Howdens kitchen installed. Couldn't be happier with the end result. The Designer came up with a classic & practical design, with modern twists, maximising all space available. We made a few little tweaks along the way & nothing was ever too much trouble. Howdens were always quick to respond to any queries & accommodated all changes with ease (special thanks to the two people I dealt with). The whole process was easy from start to finish & the quality of all units & appliances is phenomenal too. Thanks so much Bromsgrove Howdens. Highly recommended business!

“Horrendous customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RuthFrancis on 21/02/2021

I had my kitchen designed just before the first COVID lockdown. The delivery and installation was understandably delayed. Unfortunately the fridge, although discussed was missed off the design and an alternative selected without the input of the original designer. This was the last thing to be put into the kitchen, after flooring was laid. It was after the builders unpacked the fridge freezer that I realised I had been supplied with an integrated item, without any housing or door fronts. Not only that, there is not enough space to add these. This really should have been picked up by Howdens. I have contacted them on a number of occasions. Although the fridge freezer is brand new and unused, because the builders discarded the boxing they will not exchange the item. I’m now stuck with an £800 hunk of junk, and no useable fridge, completely spoiling my kitchen. Also I ordered an oak work surface. There is a splodge of varnish on the breakfast bar, and no grooves carved into the draining area by the sink.

“Howden’s Bamber Bridge”

★★★★★

First class service from start to finish, from the manager at the Howden’s Bamber Bridge store. He was very knowledgable and professional with the design and planning, offering advice and suggestions without making me feel pressurised at any point. Excellent customer service throughout the installation and I am thrilled with my finished kitchen. I would highly recommend.

The person I dealt with was excellent from start to finish. Very accommodating and we never felt rushed, he was very professional in his advice and personal opinion. We saw the online designs and every change we wanted to make was done straight away. Once ordered and kitchen and appliances arrived, it was never an issue if we need to order extras or replacements needed. Even during Covid 19 it was never an issue or delay. Really happy with products and service this is the 2nd time in 4 years we have used Howdens, never an issue.

I recently bought my kitchen from Howdens, Godalming. Excellent customer service, particularly from the person who helped me design the kitchen and he was always there whenever I wanted to make any changes. Returning unwonted items was easy as was obtaining parts during the build. Post sales customer support has been excellent. I would definitely recommend Howdens.

Go talk to the manager of that particular outlet. As every branch as such is its own store, they as such compete with all the other branches for trade, so to get started its best to see the branch manager and expalin what your problems are, evidence by paperwork or photos if required. Certainly whenever I have had an issue, they have jumped to sort it out and I have no long term issues with Howdens at a local level. Damaged goods arrived on site once, they had them switched round the same day and it wasnt local. Cannot fault Portslade so go talk.

hi if you pull the drawer fully out, put your hands on both sides of the drawer box. underneath there is a small catch on the runners pull it backwards and then lift the drawer upwards, to put it back in just do this operation backwards. hope this helps.

I don't have soft close doors from Howdens in my utility room but do have soft close doors in my main kitchen. I have removed these drawers many times using the method described by 'smallworks' so I guess these catches are universal. It is easy to do, once removed they can be put back by clipping on to the runners. If in doubt I suggest you pop into Howdens and ask for a demonstration.

I have a dishwasher and do not use the drainer for dishes etc just the odd plastic container. This is supposed to be a top of the range sink, you cannot feel any scratches it almost looks as though they are appearing under the surface - could this be a manufacturing fault? I had so many problems getting Howdens accepting the problems. Its made worse because unbeknown to the customer, you pay the fitter Howdens money for the appliances therefore you are at the mercy of the fitter.Trading Standards are very good. Contact them. They will advise you of what to put in writing to Howdens. Please stand you ground and don't be worn down by them. I told them I would stand outside and tell all customers the problem I was having.

Fitters like Howdens as they are easy to fit and they get good discounts, which they may or may not pass onto you! Kitchens are dubious quality, you may be lucky but if anything does go wrong, they do not honour their guarantee. In my opinion there are better kitchens out there with better more visible pricing and with better reputations for cuatomer care!

I bought my kitchen through Howdens. I can't say anything bad about the product. I had several complaints about the final design. Howdens have told me it's nothing to do with them that I need to take things up with the tradesman as my contract is with him. My argument is that I paid them directly. I am now taking the matter further. Do not buy Lamona products as they are made by Beko. You can insist that they tell you the prices. If I had known this myself I would have changed very expensive items to save money. If I were you I would try Wrens.

I used the company and their recommended fitter in July 2015. They are a good company from planning to completion. I had a couple of faulty pieces which they replaced the same day and they refunded some items that were not used. I have a nice looking, well fitted and a quality kitchen.
Report this content graemelees Written on: 24/02/2016
Why would anybody buy a kitchen without seeing a price list for the products they are buying, If your fitters go through them they will get an invoice for your kitchen, whether the fitters pass their discount on to you is another matter, there is nothing stopping you from opening an account with Howdens, computer and printer can do any letterhead, However there are far better independent suppliers who will give you a better deal, better quality kitchen and an invoice. Buy your appliances online, and review the product before you buy. I see the one below suggests wrens, I suggest morayfittedkitchens in elgin.
Report this content CarpenterHovecouk Written on: 22/11/2017
Howdens do NOT supply fitters. Branches may suggest fitters but they are two diffeent things. You get a choice of fitter at Howdens unlike other retial sheds who select the tradesmen team for you, and still your two contracts are supplier and fitter. Howdens are trade only and few would manage to get a kitchen from them direct unless thay can show they are in the trade. Generally you find your own tradeeman team, they get the kitchen planner to you, you see the plan, fitters get the pricing, then thye give you an all in figure. As such the contract of work as a retail customer is through the fitter and not Howdens itself because the customer if not having a direct account is buying through the fitter. Some branches may suggest fitters, some may have a rack of cards but none of that is any guarantee, get unbiased advice, ask a friend first for reccomendations. QUOTE: We understand that your local builder is best placed to give you the convenience and experience of a professional installation, that’s why we only sell to trade. If you don’t have a trade professional in mind, then contact your local depot who will help you find one or visit our find a local builder page for more information. BTW The retail price structure is I would say artificially high, so ignore that, its not comparable to the retail sheds, also account holders get slightly different prices from each other too.

20mm is no uncommon due to the weight, is the bit that keeps breaking large, perhaps it is breaking because there isnt adequate support, could just be poor quality of stone, as howdens don,t install the kitchens you cant really blame them, are they supplying the granite? I wasn,t aware they were unless it is m -stone which should not break?

Hi - we have had dreadful problems with the poor quality of our actual howdowns kitchen but we had the granite workshop fitted by the supplier and that has been really good . I think the best way to go with granite work tops is supply and fit because then it is the responsibility of the supplier to make sure it is fitted correctly. - would never buy another how dens kitchen though.
Report this content stagsfan48 Written on: 28/01/2016
Howdens have started supplying 20mm granite and have provided cutting tools to a few fitters as an incentive for them to recommend the granite to customers. They also provide a short training session to the fitters who they give the tools to.

I fitted a Gloss Cream Integrated Handle kitchen 6 months ago. Marks started to appear on a few doors and drawer fronts that we now think may be a result of splashed hot food, which is taking the surface off. Local Howdens are unhelpful and consider this normal wear and tear but the finish is not durable in a working kitchen environment. Any recommendations to restore the PET Gloss finish?

Have you contacted the depot to ask them to send a rep out to look it over? That's the normal procedure and that should have been done by the depot you bought the kitchen from. Once a rep or manager comes out, they can then send their finding to Howdens QA and resolve the issue.

We have purchased some veneered panel oak interior doors. We need to treat them and would like to retain the original colour or make it slightly darker. What would you recommend we use?

I'd recommend the Sadolin Internal Varnish "Clear Satin" for that kind of finish.

Has anyone had any problems with Howdens work tops, for example chipping?

Our worktops have been in for over a year now with no problems but there was a fault in the design which wasn't spotted by the kitchen fitter until he had cut and fitted the worktop. Howdens refused to change it as they said the fitter should have noticed the fault before he cut it. So beware - we live with the fault by strategically placing things on the worktop. But it's still there! We didn't like the quality of the doors at Howdens. Most had to be swapped as they were warped. I would go elsewhere, try an independent shop, there's. to much difference in price and the quality will last. You will spend a lot of time regretting choosing howdens.

Yes I did, all around the sink area, their response was unhelpful. I am now (less than a year later) changing my worktops (obviously not using Howdens)

Not a fan of Holdens at all, the laminate comes away too easily and yes it does chip, try getting something put right as well. They hide behind being , here at least only dealing with the trade, so they will only talk to the builder who they supplied the units. You only get what you pay for in this life, I wouldn't touch them with a bar pole.

I am planning a large kitchen extension and my builder has recommended Howdens for my kitchen. My old kitchen is a German kitchen which I have had for nearly 10 years and have never had to do any thing to it. I still want a German kitchen again and have already got a quote from Kutchens which is a German kitchen company, but my builder insists I go to Howdens. What should I do?

GET ANOTHER BUILDER! (Is this even a serious question?) You do realise that builders make money off you by using Howdens? Howdens is also known for bad quality and bad customer service and not to mention being a rip off...You are better off going to IKEA who supply all their kitchens with a 25 year guarantee.

First of all you should discuss your kitchen with someone who does it for a living, Kitchen installer or supplier. I have been doing both for the last 20 years. I have installed for them all. Wickes, Tesco,s Magnet, b&q etc. I would not buy an Ikea kitchen as the person below suggest, the base cupboards have NO VOIDS in the back for pipework, cables etc, and if your walls are slightly out they are extremely time consuming to install. In response to your question, No matter where you buy your kitchen, your carcase should be Egger board, this is high quality moisture resistant boarding. Doors, if you are going for wood, check the door quality before you purchase. If you are going for a foil finish then it doesn,t make a lot of difference as they are all the same standard. I supply colour co-ordinated carcase to match the door, in either wood or Foil, if you can use a tape measure we can supply anywhere in the uk, as well as recommend an experienced installer. Hope that helps

Remember that Howdens only supply the trade, so your builder will be buying from them and selling it to you. This is fine if you are happy with the quality of the kitchen ~ go to a local Howdens and see the kitchen for yourself . The downside is that if you need any spares, or you decide to enlarge the kitchen you will not be able to buy anything directly from Howdens yourself. You will have to find a builder to get it for you. They are firmly " trade only" right down to individual door handles and hinges! That said - I would always buy the kitchen YOU want, never mind what any builder tries to sell you.

Hi Bodiat, We have a Howden's kitchen and I would advise you to avoid them. One significant issue you face with Howden's is that you will not be their customer, your builder will. A problem? It certainly is when you aren't happy with the products. We had several product (not installation) issues and when I finally got in touch with Howden's head office, something of feat in itself as there is no customer service line, you aren't 'their' customer remember, they said "talk to your builder". Repeatedly. This was from the shop floor to the MD. So customer service is shocking and actually rude. Two years in and the pistons that soft close the doors are giving up too. Also Howden's are joiners and so the kitchen surface range is tiny, beyond wood that is, limiting your choice. All said and done, they are a pile it high, sell it cheap with a nice margin for your builder operator. Last thing, try their planning service and then compare it to say, Wren's. Howden's even scale that back to a basic planning service with zero flair by a software operator and clearly not someone hired for their artistic merit - they can probably drive a forklift though. Avoid. As Maddymddymaddy says, the builder gains from the margin they get, but will you?

Don't go to howdens - rubbish. They blamed the fitter every time. Your builder is probably getting the good at a low price then charging you extra. Go elsewhere!!!

It's your call, not the builders.

Do not buy a howdens kitchen - you will rue the day you listened to that builder!! Same thing happened to us and we have now got a poor quality howdens kitchen instead of the Neptune kitchen we really wanted!!

Have you asked Howdens? I don't know their range of kitchens. Do you still have the receipt from when you bought it?

Google "Tenby" kitchen, there is still ex discon stock floating around. If it's a square cornice/pelmet, try the Burford Ivory cornice/pelmet from Howdens, that might work.
