“Good but sad”

★★★☆☆

written by mrsperkins on 31/05/2013

I liked this book, it was well written but I found it a little to sad to finish all the way to the end. I would recommend it to someone who likes true stories but is not of a mild temperament.

this is my second time reading this book and wow, its absolutely fabulous! im on the 5th page and i felt a real feeling of sorrow as kevin has obviously had a hard life! i honestly felt like i needed to somehow reach kevin and tell him that everything would be okay! i could not feel any more sorry for this man. i slammed the book down in horror and googled kevin lewis i had to somehow tell him how his book made me feel. it really touched my heart and i could not stop crying as i turned the page. even though i have read this book before and know what will happen i cant help but hope that his life will change in the future! no on deserves the abuse that this fantastic writer has been through and i applaud kevin for coming forward and gracing everybody with his talent to write and bring up his sad past. this will forever remain the book that i will read when nothing else will surfice i cant wait till i reach the end. i will definitely be passing this book on as it has real flavour and truly moves you!

Excellent Book! Kevin should be very proud of the person he has become, so many Children from abusive backgrounds end up going down the wrong road your book just shows that anything is possible if you want it! Well Done Kevin give yourself a pat on the back. (am half way through "The Kid Moves On"). Judi.

I travel a lot and so have started listening to audio books! They are much better than listening to music. Overall, I really enjoyed this The Kid: A True Story audio book - however, as much as I want to sympathize with Kevin, I'm finding it really hard! Being born into the era that we were has always been difficult - we have all (of a similar age) faced poverty and a very tough life.

I was born with phsyical disabilities and my parents had me institutionalised at a very early age (4, I believe). I was so very unhappy too . My brothers and sisters were "normal". While I was not abused by my parents (but, greatly abused in the institution) I could never bear a grudge against people that didn't know any better i.e my parents. Kevin, your parents didn't know any better either and I hope that one day you will forgive them.

Still crying
Lynne

I loved this book. It's so emotional and very addictive if i can say. All parents should read this book and all people who abuse others and most of all people who get abused. It showed me that a life of abuse can turn out to be a success.

I've just finished the book, my brother gave me it to read. The book was good to read and i enjoyed it, i think it was good that he wrote a book about how he lived and how he managed to turn everything around. With reading this book i now think if you want to do something you can. There is nothing that will get in your way if you want it that much. I have to say enjoy the rest off your life with you wife and kids if anything you deserve it. But for anyone reading this comment if you haven't read the book yet, i say you get out there and get it.

What a fantastic book. It is sad yet uplifting to know that this poor child survived such an awful childhood. He made the best of his life despite the horrific circumstances he had to grow up in. I cried so much and really felt his pain although I could never know how he really felt. Best of luck to him and his family. The survivors of abuse are real heroes.

Overall the book was a good read and I went out and brought the follow on story "Moving On" and I was so happy that Kevin Lewis turned his life around and made a family of his own. I want to say good luck for the future and hope he has a good and happy life something he deserves. A recommended read.

written by victoria dillon on 08/04/2007

Kevin gave very good detail at just how bad his upbringing was, you seemed to be there with him when he was getting his beatings of his parents, especially his mother, who is a totally demented woman and should never have been allowed to have children, ever. I totally admire Kevin how he triumphed over a truly terrible start in life, no doubt he is still living with the painful memories of his past because there are just some things you can never forget but you can learn to live them, hence the reason he can never sit still now, and is always seeking out new knowledge in order to improve himself and make a truly great life for his family. My heart truly goes out to him and I only wish him and his family well for the future.Truly good read, you feel absorbed into the story from the very first page right through to the last page.

I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did, Victoria. I wish Kevin would write a further Biography on life as it is now. He has written a couple of fiction books (I haven't read them), but I think his own life and writings would be of far greater interest. He writes so very well.

Just a thought, in case there's any confusion, the sequel was titled 'Moving On' when it was first published. Later the title was changed to 'The Kid moves On'. I have written a review on it here at the centre in case you are interested.

written by elainephilpot on 05/04/2007

An amazing book, I have always been interested in fostering and picked up this book to read about a child's experiences of being in foster care. I was totally heartbroken, I am so saddened that a child could be let down by so many people. I am only a few years younger than Kevin and read with disbelief that this happened during my childhood in the seventies and eighties.

It has only strengthened my desire to foster in the future and would like to thank Kevin for this and one day maybe I can offer a child the opportunity that 'Alan' gave to Kevin. I would highly recommend this book and will defiantly be reading 'The Kid moves on'.

“I have never read a book as quickly as this one. ”

★★★★★

written by bust bee on 07/02/2007

I have never read a book as quickly as this one.

It is reassuring to know that I'm not the only one.

I'm 29 now, have a great job. Which I have to give credit to my old boss for pushing me and telling me I could do it. Without him I would still be the girl with no confidence, still believing all the things my parents said I was. My father tries to take the credit for my success, I am now strong enough to tell him what I think of him.

I am also a mother, who has done everything the complete opposite from my mum and dad. My daughter tells me every day "You're cool mum" and "I know I'm beautiful mum" she oozes confidence that I have never had.

I'm a single mother, and I remember times where it was getting too much.....and there were feelings of rage bubbling up from somewhere.....and I fought the demons.

Councillors have said "Your mum and dad were brought up with violence, that's all they know, that's why they done it to you" I say RUBBISH!!!!! I knew it felt wrong when they beat me so hard my front teeth got stuck in the laminate flooring. so I knew I would never inflict pain on my kid. Someone has to break the chain......and I did.

Kevin, thank you so much for this wonderful book.

Having read the book, I couldn't get over how similar my childhood was to Kevin Lewis's. Down to the years certain things happened to him, to the things his mum used to do to him. It made me cry a lot of times, but it also made me think that I can be a lot stronger and achieve things. It was like sitting in a room and sharing your experiences with a friend. Thank you. xxxxxxx

“This is one of the best, if not THE best book I have...”

★★★★★

written by Helen of Troy on 15/10/2006

This is one of the best, if not THE best book I have ever read. I could not put it down. I even got up in the middle of the night to continue my read. It is not often I have time to read, but everything just seemed to have to wait while I read through The Kid: A True Story by Kevin Lewis. It is not a long book, and it keeps you interested throughout.

Kevin writes about his early life in a sort of matter of fact way, with no evidence of self-pity, though what this man went through in the hands of his parents was horrific to say the least. Starved of love, food and material possessions, beaten until nearly unconscious, neglected to such an extent he could not even seek sanctuary at school, as the other children ostracized him for smelling of stale urine due to his mother's non-existent care, and for being generally scruffy.

This book will make you feel appalled by the fact that all this went on not in Victorian times, but through the seventies and eighties! He was let down by many, including Social Services. It is hard to believe this happened, but it did.

When Kevin had grown up he was still trying to hide all the demons, and it was only when he had his own children that he thought he should face them.
What a very brave man Kevin is. This must have been so difficult for him to write, having to re-live those nightmares of his childhood, but he does it so very well. I can't wait to read the follow on to this book.

If you think life has thrown you a bad lot, get this book and read it. It makes you feel ashamed if you had any self-pity. It shows how even the worst happenings in life can be overcome. I wonder if there was anything else Kevin just could not bring himself to remember or put down in words. It does make you wonder. At the end of this book I had tears in my eyes for the courage Kevin has shown.
