Written on: 06/01/2010

I volunteered with Frontier on their Fiji Medical project in June, As the project was in the early stages, I felt that the Fiji Red Cross (who I was working with) and the Frontier team communicated excellently and I felt really comfortable with the people I was working with.

The project leader was fantastic and the accommodation became home for the short time I was
there. I was so impressed with Frontier that I've just signed up for 10 weeks in Cambodia and am
looking into the possibility of… Read Full Review

Written on: 09/12/2009

I volunteered in Ghana on a teaching project organised by Frontier, for four weeks. This is, to me, the best thing I have done with my life so far. It was the most rewarding, challenging and emotional experience I have experienced and yet I would happily, if finances would allow, jump on a plane tomorrow to do it all over again! So anyone in the position, that wants to help, and can help, in a community abroad, DO IT!
I travelled during my free time, mostly to the beach, to either Cape Coast… Read Full Review

Written on: 19/11/2009

I did 9 months in Tanzania with frontier in 07-08, 3 as an RA on the marine project, 3 as an RA on the savanna project and 3 as a CA on the marine project when finished my first two phases. Although I had the time of my life and the in country staff did an amazing job to accomodate us with what they were given. I think that this company is poorly run from the london office, the london staff clearly show that they have no field experience, and the descriptions of the projects are not accurate at… Read Full Review

Written on: 11/08/2009

My partner, a scientist who works at the natural history museum booked a 2 week trip with Frontier to do diving research off a greek island.
When she got there, the description of the trip given on Frontier's site and in their brochure was woefully inaccurate. The trip was 'organised' by a guy who was not a scientist, (he even vowed to convert her to creationism by the end of her trip). Not only that, but no scientist was present, nor had been for years.
This guy was merely a layperson running… Read Full Review

Hi,

I had a similarly horrible experience with Frontier myself and I am also in the process of claiming my money back in the small claims court. I enrolled on the China Journalism Project hoping to gain experience and have something published on the English Language Newspaper or Magazine mentioned in their brochure and on their website. What they neglected to mention was the Chinese language magazine which I was placed on upon arrival. The language barrier was insurmountable even with the unpaid student translator they provided. The few days I spent at the magazine before leaving consisted mainly of sitting in a silent office and periodically asking my translator if there was any work I could do, to no avail. From the moment I asked frontier to have me placed on the English Language magazine, they began making accusations about my behaviour, saying I wasn't following the work schedule properly (perhaps because I had left the magazine?...) which apparently amounted to appaling behaviour rendering everything that had gone wrong with the placement my fault. They even accused me of being drunk and disorderly at my accomodation when this was in fact another volunteer! I asked him to email them to clear this up and he obliged but I still await an apology from them. I was told I couldn't move to the english language magazine and given no reason for this. I requested a refund minus accomodation costs and any food which I might eat while at the hostel so Frontier insisted that I leave my accomodation, which I had already paid them for ( cost of hostel £200, price of project £1100 ) before they would even consider a refund. They had the cheek to say in their defence that my stayng at the hostel, after having left the magazine, was innapropriate behaviour. Of course I couldn't afford to find new accomodation for the rest of the month and didn't want to risk losing yet more money to frontier so in their eyes all my refund requests were invalid.

It would be good to have a chat about our respective experiences and see if there is any way we can help one another in court in terms of advice etc ( I am of course assuming that you went ahead with your case and that it is ongoing? ) I am a student with not alot of funds but I'm representing myself and stomaching the court fees for the same reason as you - principal. At the moment I have just sent off the allocation questionaire and I believe I'm waiting for the judge to schedule a timetable of events.

It'd be great to hear from you: joshc1984@hotmail.co.uk

Written on: 03/08/2009

My daughter and a friend are out in Tanzania right now 2/8/09. Frontier have changed all the itinerary when they arrived. They were doing teaching, diving and forest research. The order was changed and when they arrived at the teaching the school said they were not expecting them. So they were unable to do it. They spent the rest of that week playing and teaching the young kids on the street. There are very few staff and accomodation is cheap/free and very poor, which is what was expected, but… Read Full Review

Frontier are an absolute disgrace. My flatmate and i paid 995 pounds to volunteer at a school in central america and the whole experience was a disaster from day one. The school itself was excellent, the kids were fantastic the other volunteers were very friendly and welcoming but we arrived for our teaching project during the summer holidays and were not informed of this by Frontier despite many emails from the project coordinator advising Frontier to make us aware of this. There was a summer… Read Full Review

Written on: 27/05/2009 by jemimanapier143 (1 review written)

Someone has recently won a case against Frontier in the small claims court, and their ineptitude has featured both in the Guardian and on Radio 4. Also, the ridiculously positive post about the Tanzania trip seems to be copied directly from Frontier itself and appears on lots of other review sites word-for-word.

Peru teaching - Frontier lied continually about the trip - where it would be, who was in charge, extra costs etc.
They charged me £895 when if I had gone directly with their partner… Read Full Review

Frontier are a very poor company! I too could write a dissertation on how terrible this company is. The only reason I am giving them a one is because the trip introduced me to the best orphanage ever! If you want to volonteer with children check out www.kidsworldwide.org which puts you in direct contact with the orphanages around the world etc. Dont go with the company, I found them unorganised, unprofessional, unco-operative. It seemed they didnt know what they were talking about, had never… Read Full Review

Written on: 04/12/2008 by jbricandy (1 review written)

I feel I had a similarly nightmarish experience as the previous two people who have left negative feedback. I could write a very lengthy essay on why Frontier are an unfavourable 'company' (yes, I see them as a company, not a 'non-profitable organisation'). As far I am am aware, as soon as I arrived in Costa Rica for my wildlife project, Frontier appeared to do nothing to make me safe or content in what was a very unusual and scary place to me at first. I paid to stay and help at a wildlife… Read Full Review

Written on: 31/08/2008 by jemimanapier (1 review written)

I paid £895 to Frontier for a month-long teaching volunteer placement in Peru. They passed on around £200 to the volunteer organisation out there that actually organised my stay - I have no idea where the rest of the money went. I feel that it certainly wasn't on the staff, as I never received return phone calls from them and they appeared to have no idea about the project (different people told me to book flights to totally different airports etc.), and completely messed up my pick-up so… Read Full Review

I've just got back from a project in Tanzania - can't believe how quickly it went, the whole experience was amazing and I'm gutted to be home already. I'm already missing the crew out there loads, everyone got on so well and I'll definitely be meeting up with some of them for a night out soon. The place itself is like something out of a film- unbelievably beautiful and the weather is bloody amazing - which meant the beach parties were very cool! I went from being an absolute beginner at diving… Read Full Review

Written on: 05/07/2008 by Tanzania Teacher (1 review written)

I taught English in Tanzania with Frontier. The project itself was very good - the students really wanted to learn, the local community was wonderful and very welcoming. I had a great time there - Tanzania is a fantastic country. Volunteering and teaching English is a fantastic way to spend part of your gap year. However, I was really unimpressed with Frontier, as were all other volunteers who were there at the same time as me. Would not recommend them… Read Full Review
