Setup a dedicated server with them. It was fine for two weeks then had a hardware fault.
I spent ages chasing them up asking what was happening. Took about 1 month for them to get the server back online!

No problems with server uptime (to date) and I think it is just the customer service that needs to be improved... drastically! I am no IT expert so on a positive note I have found the FAQ's actually very helpful. Frequent downtime of website and many, many lost emails. When I upgraded the package to a managed server, they took over a month to do it but instead of saying at the outset that they did not have the equipment, they pretended that the site had been upgraded and eventually it emerged that it had not been. When it was changed to a managed server, they did it without notice and the web site crashed.

I've had a 1and1 hosted website for more than 5 years, but I still don't fully understand all that 1and1 appear to offer!
(A '1and1' for dummies would help :) )
I've been happy (so far) with my site as i built it using a template, but now I'd like to add more services to it (e.g. MP3 downloads) I've come unstuck. I've no idea IF I can and if I can how do I do it? Comes back to my 'bad point' about assumed knowledge...

When it come to cancellation, 1and1 as far as I am aware have still not done it, even I send a request and said that I follow their direction to cancel one of the service, but I still got billing. I refuse to pay for the service I'd like to cancel. 1and1 shut down all my service, including the one I already pay and still under contract for a few more months as far as I am aware?... After shutting down one of my servers for the sending a subscribed customer newsletter I tried to get through to someone to rectify the problem. As far as I am concerned it took 2 days before I was able to get a response from the server department. The level 1 support was unhelpful in my opinion.

In my experience the customer service was unhelpful. As others have mentioned, as long as everything is working it's fine - I didn't have any downtime, however, when it came to taking some money from my credit card, which un-known to me had expired and I hadn't updated the details, they apparently had sent me an e-mail informing me of this (I didn't recall seeing one!) As far as I am concerned you get what you pay for! Slow servers, in my experience unhelpful customer service, I was unhappy with the billing process (e.g. I do not agree with auto renewals without prior notification). I'm going elsewhere and advise you do the same. Not 1and1!… Read Full Review

I've been with 1and1 for ages - I'd guess about 6 years or more - for my personal domains and I've never had any major problems. Recently a tiny server hiccup that lasted for all of five minutes and hasn't been repeated.
My current problem - the one which brought me here to look for another host - is that I'm working in France and wish to set up a web presence and email for my employer. We're a holiday company and all our staff are British or English-speaking so we need an English interface… Read Full Review

I have been with 1&1 for quite a while and they used to be a great Web Hosting Companies, however due to my recent problems with them I no longer recommend to with 1AND1! Their customer services have been very unhelpful, honestly I've never experienced anything like it. My page used to load in 4 seconds when I first joined 1and1 and now it takes 1.5 mintues to load and this has been happening for 6 weeks, and as far as I am concerned I have not yet recieved any help from 1&1's customer… Read Full Review

I do not recommend 1&1 - they have a few nice tools and the site seems pretty fast, but their customer service really lets them down in my opinion, with only a 24 hour reply to each e-mail query - so it could potentially take weeks to resolve a problem that way, and in my experience customer services really don't seem to know what they're doing!… Read Full Review

Having taken out microsoft exhange server with 1&1, which I didn't use simply through lack on necessity. I left its contract to run out, to find out that tucked away the the ts and cs was the recurring billing info.
