I have experienced all kinds of problems with ftp access, erratic response, meaningless stats reports, and final straw has been my sites have been inaccessible through various ISPs for 4 days now. I have never written about a company before, but these guys made me so angry, I could not take it any more. First of all, when I had a problem with them charging me for services I didn't even order, they refused to refund me. It took over 2 months and they didn't care, so I stopped paying them. As soon as they started complaining I owed them money, I mentioned I wasn't going to pay them any more until they refunded for there errors. I used them for years mainly because they were initially cheap but the service was never great as far as I am concerned. This week they finally convinced me to leave by what I believe they did, locking my account and charging me for a bill I am sure I have already paid.

8 times out of ten I cannot even view my webspace directory structure. 8 times out of ten my webpage disappears as far as I am aware, if my domain does not even exist.

Setup a dedicated server with them. It was fine for two weeks then had a hardware fault.

I spent ages chasing them up asking what was happening. Took about 1 month for them to get the server back online!

Frequent downtime of website and many, many lost emails. When I upgraded the package to a managed server, they took over a month to do it but instead of saying at the outset that they did not have the equipment, they pretended that the site had been upgraded and eventually it emerged that it had not been. When it was changed to a managed server, they did it without notice and the web site crashed.

(A '1and1' for dummies would help :) )

I've been happy (so far) with my site as i built it using a template, but now I'd like to add more services to it (e.g. MP3 downloads) I've come unstuck. I've no idea IF I can and if I can how do I do it? Comes back to my 'bad point' about assumed knowledge...

After shutting down one of my servers for the sending a subscribed customer newsletter I tried to get through to someone to rectify the problem. As far as I am concerned it took 2 days before I was able to get a response from the server department. The level 1 support was unhelpful in my opinion.

As others have mentioned, as long as everything is working it's fine - I didn't have any downtime, however, when it came to taking some money from my credit card, which un-known to me had expired and I hadn't updated the details, they apparently had sent me an e-mail informing me of this (I didn't recall seeing one!) I've been with 1and1 for ages - I'd guess about 6 years or more - for my personal domains and I've never had any major problems. Recently a tiny server hiccup that lasted for all of five minutes and hasn't been repeated.

My current problem - the one which brought me here to look for another host - is that I'm working in France and wish to set up a web presence and email for my employer. We're a holiday company and all our staff are British or English-speaking so we need an English interface… Read Full Review

I was the same as you - I just found one that ticked the boxes I was after and went for it. There are so many options out there you can't keep on looking or you'd never get round to building the site!<br/><br/>Best of luck with the B'n'B thing!

<br/>Thanks for posting your reply. I did look at Heart and many, many others including Lycos and Microsoft Office Live who offer free hosting & domain name plus many other microsoft features. In the end I got fed up studying all of the different deals & went with American company Innter.net via them I brought a .fr and.com plus their hosting package for 35euros. Time will tell if I made the right choice to host my B&B website with them.

Andy - we ended up going with www.heartinternet.co.uk. A little more expensive, but *very* fast online support and happy to take any credit card regardless of where it's based. They don't/cant sell ".fr" domains, but do sell ".eu" ones.<br/><br/>The only major issue we have is the lack of "out of office" facility on their otherwise excellent webmail.<br/><br/>The way they handle multiple domains on the same account is different to 1&1 and does work out quite a bit more pricey. However, in the grand scheme it's still not a lot of cash and if it's for a company (as opposed to a private user) then it's definitely worth the extra for the reduction in hassle.

I have been with 1&1 for quite a while and they used to be a great Web Hosting Companies, however due to my recent problems with them I no longer recommend to with 1AND1! Their customer services have been very unhelpful, honestly I've never experienced anything like it. My page used to load in 4 seconds when I first joined 1and1 and now it takes 1.5 mintues to load and this has been happening for 6 weeks, and as far as I am concerned I have not yet recieved any help from 1&1's customer… Read Full Review
