The Nokia 5210 is a great mobile phone. I've had it for 4 years, and I've dropped it, sat on it, and even accidentally dropped it out of the window of a moving car going 60, and it hasn't been damaged (except cosmetic damage to the case).

It took 4 years for anything to go wrong, and now it turns itself off on its own sometimes, but who has a phone for 4 years nowadays?

Where do I start, the Nokia 5210 is the worst phone I have had in my possession, at first when I got it, it used to be fine. But after it would repeatidly crash when I try send text messages or try going into games which is pretty much the best feature the phone has. It also crashes when trying to use wap features and turns off. Within the last week it would send battery low signals when the battery is fully charged. The phone is not damaged shell wise at all hardly droped with force yet there are lists of problems.

I had a Nokia 5210 phone for 3 months in that time, I couldn't write text messages, I had a buzzing noise on it and it keep turning itself off. I also sent it to be repaired twice only for it to come back the same as it went, I'd never buy one again.

Overall, i like this Nokia 5210 mobile phone as it is ideal for my lifestyle as i like to participate in sports and if i drop my phone it is unlikely to damage it. I can download good music ringtones however i will be looking to upgrade soon as this phone is now quite big compared to new ones around.

The Nokia 5210 is a good phone overall, the fuctions are reasonable. If you want a sturdy phone that is almost entirely protected by the case then this is the phone for you

written by Stubee on 04/01/2004

Had this Nokia 5210 mobile phone for 18 months and it has been brilliant.
My wife has a Nokia phone and has a better signal than the 5210, but it has never caused me that many probs.
Dropped it down the toilet (it was clean) just before christmas, and the little begger still works fine! It is starting to look a bit beaten up now, my job isn't sitting in an office or company car all day, But it still functions ok.

I normally change phones every 10-12 months but this one has been great so I'm sticking with it!

Dont you think this Nokia 5210 phone is the nicest ever? I look at this phone and think to myself that this is the king of all phones first thing the ruggedness of this phone is outstanding and the coolness is off the chart. You can aquire soo many colour cases for this to suit your style and if you are clumsy dont worry1 This is the phone for you.

The only thing I would say is wrong with this phone is that it is not colour, if it was color it would be the jesus of all phones!

Tiny screen, comes in some sickly colours. Average features. Nothing great. Boring, uninspiring.

written by Markmobile on 09/11/2003

This is a mobile phone and it works. It doesn't go wrong, it's battery lasts for ages, you can drop it, sit on it, spill beer on it and it still works. Excellent reception and clarity. The screen doesn't blur when it's running too many colours because its just good old black and white.
I've just gone back to this phone from a polyphonic colour clam-shell which was too fiddly, too short battery life and got to be a pain in the butt once the novelty wore off. If you want to make phone calls: do it on this.

I have had this Nokia 5210 phone for almost 2 years and it has served me good. there is a slight problem with the shell now though, but this is very good cause im really clumsy with my phone and have dropped it quite a few times. the size of the phone is quite big but im getting a nokia 7650 so its smaller than that and although all the bad points this phone is durable and will last for a long time if not mistreated alot.

written by theneb on 14/10/2003

When I first got this phone it was ace! I'm a very clumsy person and the shells are awesome because after about 2 weeks of having it I'd already broken the shell screen. Simply just get a new cover right? Wrong, these are the most impossilbe original covers to get. I brought a cheap one but the cheap fact certainly came back to haunt me. As for the waterproofness, I'll be testing that when I get my new phone.
I've had it since it came out but it's possibly the worst ever phone except for being durable.
The voice communication is simply awful, Know Dom Jolly? Thats me on my phone.
However the thing I mostly use my phone for is to text, however when I get 5 text messages. That's it! the memory is full and I have to delete messages to get any new ones.
Quite simply there's better Durable phones out now, and I'll invest in one of those.

Messages storage depends on network SIM card memory and not phone memory. My network has upgraded/improved their SIM cards to 64K and can now store up to 30 messages inbox/outbox combined. Old SIM card can only store up to 12 messages.

“The 5210 is the first Nokia Mobile phone I've had,...”

★★★★☆

written by Ed on 12/08/2003

The 5210 is the first Nokia Mobile phone I've had, after always choosing Alcatel models in the past. The main reason I wanted this model is the fact that it claims to be virtually indestructable.

I find most other models I have had seem to show thair age very quickly, mainly due to general wear from being carried in a pocket with money or keys etc., but the rubber case on this model is much more robust, and in any case can be replaced if it does start to look worn.

The ringtones on this phone are much easier to hear than on many I've used, and there is a sufficient choice of tones. However, I donb't like the fact that if you happen to want to change the ring tone, you have to change it individually for all of your profiles, which can be a bit time consuming. The composer is rather difficult to use, compared to the version on Alcatel phones, which displays the tune in correct musical notation, rather than the ASCII codes used on the Nokia. I also never understood why the cursor moves the opposite way to the button you press. Is this a software bug?

On the main screen, the signal and battery meters are very easy to see, but the signal meter is less precise than I would expect, having only four bars rather than the five I thaught all phones had until I saw this one. The clock, when enabled, is rather small, and there is no option to show the date on the main screen. I would have thaught that it would be easier to use the main menu if it had multiple items on the screen at once, rather than a single item with a fancy animation, but I guess this is personal choice.

One feature I miss from the Alcatel is the ability to automatically store sent text messages, but I am getting used to not having it now. Also, the multi-field directory was useful, but I think that is just an Alcatel invension, and am not suprised it doesn't exist on the Nokia.

Overall, I'd say that this is a well designed phone.

written by Chris. on 23/07/2003

I've had this Nokia 5210 phone for a year now and although i did wear out one of the buttons at first (far too much space impact!) which needed a replacement i've had no problems with it. I found the vibrate very strong which is useful in very loud environments, particulally as the ringing volume is not very loud. (although the strong vibrate can be somewhat embarrasing in quiet surroundings!) I have dropped it a vertical distance of over 20ft onto a hard wooden floor and it survived! this phone is great and if it wernt for the networks giving new phones away free i wouldn't be changing!

written by Somebody. on 09/06/2003

Shockproof shells are rubbish, when I splashed a small amount of water over the phone, some water actually got inside. When you drop the phone the casing comes apart occasionally. The thermometer is always wrong. It always says 30c in a normal room temperature environment which is normally 19-20c. The battery life is horrific, I only got 1 1/2 days out of it (Constant use - I talk a lot), The reception on the phone is rubbish, (1 Bar or less). I live in an area where coverage is good and lastly when I charge the phone the display flickers. I have now bought a 3510i and it is 200% better. I think nokia have let themselves down by making this phone. Scrap it

Joshua.'s Response to 105695_Somebody.'s Review

Written on: 15/06/2003

i think this review has not been thought of in detail. did you miss the selling point of the telephone? its not the way it looks or the way it sounds or the battery life, its the fact that if you drop it off a cliff (which i have not but i have played a game with my friends where you kick it as far as you can) it will NOT break. that is why clumsy people buy it, that is why normail peple buy it, that is why people who cant afford fone insurance buy it. this fone is great it does everything it says it does. It didnt say that it had a 3year stand by time? so why expect that. i had this fone for a long time and was relunctant to part with it for my new 6100 (which is again a great fone) because the 6100 would break.

This Nokia 5210 is really good. However, the vibrate function doesn't work properly any more, which is really annoying. Another point, which could be a bad one, but I find funny, is that when you go to menu>profiles>general>personalise>message alert tone> and select personal, when you go to names>caller groups>and select one you get a language menu. HA! I don't care about this though.
