Written on: 05/03/2010

I was a bit unsure about using tesco opticians from reading the reviews - it seemed to be a bit of a 'marmite' experience ! but not one to be influenced, I decided to give it a go for myself! And whilst I don't like Marmite, I did like tesco opticians....got a free sight test - my other half had paid £20ish for his at Specsavers - and we'd both got the same tests done. I think they've actually got a good range of specs - didn't think I'd find designers but I did.....loads to choose… Read Full Review

NEVER EVER GO TO TESCO FOR AN EYE TEST OR GLASSES. MAJORITY OF STAFF ARE RUDE & INTIMIDATING. HAD GLASSES CHANGED 3 TIMES. FIRST TIME TOTALLY BLURRED.CHANGED MY LENSES TO VARIFCAL, WHAT I ASKED FOR IN FIRST PLACE. PAID EXTRA FOR THIS. THEY STILL CAUSED BLURRED VISION. THEY THEN CHANGED THEM BACK TO SINGLE. NO REFUND GIVEN WHEN ASKED. WILL NEVER, EVER SHOP IN TESCO AGAIN NO MATTER HOW CONVENIENT IT IS… Read Full Review

Written on: 04/02/2010

I have had endless problems buying glasses from Tesco,Friern Barnet, London as follows:

1. TWO MONTHS and the glasses still not available - the lab have had to remake the lenses because of TECHNICIAN ERROR
2. I ordered one reading pair and one distance - they made two distance pairs!
3. I was refunded for one pair - the other frame was the wrong colour, not as ordered.
4. After a further two weeks, the correct frame is still not available - it is now over two months since original order… Read Full Review

“ I would like to point out that my rating would be 5...”

Written on: 12/01/2010 by Mamma2 five (14 reviews written)

I would like to point out that my rating would be 5 star if I knew without doubt that the assistant who conducted the first part of my eye test was fully qualified to do so. All the assistants wore navy suits and spectacles, bar the Optician, and I am now alarmed in case my first tests were undertaken by an unqualified person. In the past, only an optician/optometrist has conducted those tests. Why did the Tesco Optician not perform the full range of tests himself?

When I arrived at the… Read Full Review

I work as an assistant at Tesco Opticians, i am not a qualified Optometrist. We are not qualified as we do not make any make any clinical descisions regarding the the health or sight of the customers eye.

When you refer to the "first half" of the sight test, i would like to correct you in saying that, this is what we refer to as "pre-screening".

The first machine is an auto-refractometer (key word being auto), this is done by placing the customers chin on a rest and leaning there forehead on a bar infront. It is a devise that measures the power and range of the vision. Once the head is in place the assistant simply pushes one button, and the machne does all the work. The assistant then transfers the information to the customers record card for the qualified optometrist to review.

The second machine is a tonometer, an instrument for measuring the intraocular pressure by sensing deflections of the cornea in reaction to a puff of pressurized air. Again, the assistant simply places the customers head onto the forehead rest and pushes a button. The information is also recorded onto the customers record card for the qualified optometrist to review.

If this information was not recorded by the assistant it would not have been checked by the optometrist, then you may have reason to worry. If this information was not on the record card, the optometrist would carry out the sight test, and ask the assistant to measure the intraocular pressure afterwards. (The auto-refractonometer findings are not clinically nessesary). No prescription would be issued until the optometrist is sure this has been done and checked.

Tesco simply choose to have the assistants carry out the initial pre-screening, to save valuable time for the optometrist to carry out the sight test. 20 minutes is allocated for the sight test, how would you feel if half of that time had been used by the optometrist on machinery that an assistant is capable enough to use, and does not need qualifications to do so.

If you require any further information, please feel free to contact our customer service team.

******* Tesco are now giving out free sight tests to all private patients on a permenant basis *******

Hi there, it's unfortunate that you have been left so very unhappy with your experience at Tesco Opticians. As a Practice Manager myself and spectacle wearer I fully understand the frustration of not feeling at ease with a new pair of specs. If you are unhappy with your new prescription spec's and the sight test was conducted at Tesco then you need to ask for the name of the Opticians Manager and arrange a convenient time to sit down and calmly discuss what you are experienceing.
The Manager will then check your spectacles have been made correctly to the specification requested by both the Optometrist and Dispenser. If they are not as per request they will be re-made asap, if they are correct to the sight test results and the lens measurements are correct you can request a re-test which I am sure the Manager will be happy to oblige.
All Tesco Opticians have a Manager. It is this person you will need to contact. The Tesco Opticians department is a specialist area and therefore no other Tesco Manager will be able to assist you.

since you are a Tesco Optical Manager can you please kindly read my review here, No.51, and explain why the Optometrist did not conduct the first part of the tests himself. Are Tesco using unqualified staff to undertake those tests? other posts here mention this same problem and it is very worrying.

OMG ! I've shopped at Tesco for years, and never even noticed that they had an opticians. My Mum saw the £10 ad in the paper, so I thought I'd give it a go. I've never needed glasses before, but had started to feel a strain on my eyes. The optician was really nice - explained what's happening with my eyes and I do need a pair of reading glasses. I didn't get one of the £10 frames (but did get the free test!), but got some cool Morgan glasses which I thought were great value, compared to… Read Full Review

Written on: 01/12/2009 by jj2205 (12 reviews written)

I have just returned from TESCO, in HAYES Middlesex, after having an eye test.
The first part of the test was carried out by a female who is not qualified to do so, she said she was doing it to save time as the optician had not arrived for work, this was at 9.55am.
I wandered around the store and came back to the desk at 11.15am, the optician had arrived by then.
The glasses are advertised at £10, complete with eye test, but, i was told that the frames would be £10 and the lens would be an… Read Full Review

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TESCO OPTICIANS,THE AFTER SERVICE IS NON EXISTANT, GLASSES WERE FAULTY AND THE CASE THEY PROVIDED WAS TOO SMALL, WHEN I ASKED FOR A CASE THAT WOULD FIT THEY SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY! ALSO THEY WERE MUCH DEARER THAN THE SMALLER OPTICIANS I HAVE USED BEFORE. I E-MAILED THE HEAD OFFICE BUT I AM STILL WAITING FOR A REPLY. I USED TO SPEND OVER £100.00 PER WEEK ON GROCERIES I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN A TESCO AGAIN. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL GLASSES, THEY SHOULD STICK… Read Full Review

I would like to point out the misleading free eye test at Tesco Opticians, Brislington Store, Bristol. Although advertised as a feeebie it is not the case unless you choose from their range.
If you do not choose from the limited range that is in the store you will be charged £10.00 and no prescription to use elsewhere.
Also this is not advertised very clearly.
Customer care is awful and would not recommend going there. I should of STAYED with Specsavers!… Read Full Review

I had a free eyetest at Tesco opticians at Great Yarmouth and could not fault it.
However,I chose a pair of varifocals which I liked and was told the prescription would fit in. After 2 weeks I had to go back in and have my pupil distance measured again,my glasses order was cancelled, another pair ordered as someone had written the distances down incorrectly. Another 2 weeks I didn't hear anything, went in,my glasses had just arrived. I couldn't see properly at all with them. I came home, tried… Read Full Review
