“My BIG MAX SCOOTER Kymco 500r ABS 2013 "Beast"”

★★★★★

written by RogelioMacLean141 on 02/12/2014

Its November 27, 2014 Thanksgiving Morning, I'm leaving the city limits of Houston Texas heading East on I-10, my destination is Lafayette/Broussard Louisiana 220 miles away. Its 38, cool and wind is at my face @ 15mph. I've owned my 500 since September of 2014 and I have put over 3,000 miles on this Monster MAX scooter. I returned from Louisiana into Houston city limits in matter of 4 hours and 40mins traveling 220 miles and stopping 3 times for Gas and food & a smoke. My average speed on my 500 during my trip of 440 miles was 70mph and this machine didn't miss a beat. It cut through the 15mph wind with very little movement. I really enjoy riding this Scooter it so smooth and love the feel of the Scooter sitting on top of this huge seat, knowing the amount of storage exits under the seat including a Light that comes on auto when open. Also really like the Cell Phone Holder/Charging dock that displays "Phone-Icon" on Upper console during charging from 12volt plug. Great thing about Scooter is its weight and is the main reason for having a Parking Break lever that works great when hand ABS brakes are not being used during traffic light stop and securing Center stand stable working/parking condition. Ride One of these Kymco Max Scooters, you will want to own this remarkable machine.

“ Excellent!...”

written by Amancio on 30/03/2013

I like motorcycles, but a scooter like Kymco Exciting 500, ABS or not, is easier and enough for the speed in any higway. Good sond, solid, good engine, excellent brakes, very economic as confortable to a long trip and no need to worry about shifts, like foot side levers as clutch. Atractive and very nice bike style.

“oil leak; bad head gasket”

★★☆☆☆

written by scooter60 on 17/08/2012

I bought a 2007 Xciting 500 with only 6,000 mile on it. After a month of riding it (normal riding) I began to notice a small oil leak coming from the right side of the motor. Took the bike to a local Kymco dealership and they confirmed it was a bad head gasket. Very disappointed!! I thought Kymco made reliable bikes. otherwise, the bike ran fine and the handling was sufficient.

“update: 2007 exciting 500”

written by on 08/06/2012

I'm Bill and I've been riding the Orange crush (Kymco xciting 500 2007) around Arizona streets for 2 years now. The bike is as fun as ever and now has 20,000 twenty thousand miles on it. A Couple of sets of tires, several oil changes, and an air filter change is all the maintenance that was required. Runs as strong as the day I bought it. This has been one impressive bike. Reliable reliable, reliable. More heads turning and interest in this scoot than any of the other 7 motorcycles I've owned during this same time period. Can't say enough about the bike. If you 're thinking about getting into riding, or buying a scooter to get around on, you can do no better than this bike. It has one of the best breaking systems of any motorcycle. Handles very very well around town and on the freeway. Remember, Your not speeding if you don't get caught. So what are you waiting for?

I've been riding a used 2007 xciting 500 I picked up over a year ago. I racked up more than 8000 additional miles with nothing more than occaisional oil changes and two new tires. (mileage over 13,000 so far) It feels like it runs better and better with each use. This scoot has a maximim fun factor that is beyond the scope of geared motorcycles. It handles exceptionally well, and the bright orange color combined with the upright riding position make it arguably safer in traffic. Kymco's motto is "better than best" , and they are company we'll be hearing alot more from. If you want a scooter this is The One. I only wish Kymco was bringing their 700cc scooter to the states. They definately live up to their motto.

I test rode this bike as an upgrade to my Kymco 250 Bet&Win. Terrible handling in cross winds. I live in Wellington, New Zealand and I found the bike downright dangerous in the breeze. Could be the windshield. I had test-ridden the same one in Cape Town, SA where I also found the windshield turbulence off-putting. Sorry Kymco, this one's not for me.

My 500 has been down for 7 months and I not happy. since I brought the unit the dealer went out of business and the closes dealer is 150 miles away. Get it repaired and a week later it will not start. the ride is very nice but I can not trust it to go to for no more.

Bought my 2009 ri the summer of 2010 and put 3000 miles on her before putting her up for the winter. Very smooth ride both highway and around town! Power is good for a scooter, no wheelies on this machine but plenty of power there! I was very comfortable on a 200 mille freeway ride. Only complaint is starting in the morning when cold! Should start right up as it is fuel injected, but takes a few attemps to start! Not bad but noticable! Overall ii love my x500 and am very happy with my decision to go with the Kymco!! Happy riding to all!!!!

★★★★★

written by on 25/11/2010

2009 FI Xciting 500, almost 600 miles. Was parked in a garage for a year and I purchased it with 21 miles on the tach. Speedometer went out-replaced under warranty. Hauls lilke crazy, getting 67mpg on the highway between 70 and 80mph. Mid 30s in town with plenty of stop and go but I am also still in the break-in period. Sort of. Takeoff is great, storage is awesome (although not as good as the 95 Helix I replaced) but sound, power, fueleconomy - everything is so much better.
I do not trust the tilting in turns as of yet although nitrogen in the tires made a difference.
Got rid of my tiger 955i as I knew it would kill me and it was no fun in town.(Talk about boiling your legs here in Phoenix in summer)

This is the best scooter ever. Nothing is ever perfect for anyone but this one is a looker, a racer and a cruiser. Compromises are natural.

One thing I noticed: She is sitting outside overnight and in the AM I have a hard time starting. I need to hit the starter about three times for roughly 4 seconds until she springs into life. Remember-this is fuel injected so this should not happen at all.

Still - I love it. Cant wait to take it long distance once its a bit warmer.

Where do I get accessories? I need to rid the turbulences coming off the windshield. I am 6'2 and it blows everything right in my eyes...

Have put more than 28,000 miles on my X500 in 15 months of actual riding time. She has been da bomb! Added orange led lights in the wheel wells, Laminar Lip, Jack Vinson back rest, Givi box, 2 running lights in back, Laminar rain cover, and deer whistle. She is the best!

It's been more than 2 years since I wrote this review and I wouldn't change a thing. Priscilla just turned over 50,000 miles and is still going strong. I've had several other scooters in the mean time (TNG, Stella, Silverwing, Helix) and own a Sym HD200 (as backup and also for city riding) also but the X500 is still my favorite!

08 Kymco xciting 500Ri. No abs but fuel injected. I prefer no abs as I want to do the handling, not abs taking over for me. Love the color and easy to get accessories for. Everyone looks!
Added laminar lip/ airhawk seat/chrome foot boards/wind flares/Kymco backrest with chrome bar, 2 cortech tail bags that they said don ' t hook together but do with the saddlebags. So change the buckles and all is great! They sit on top of each other as bottom one is round while top one is flat. Mpg from 55-63mpg depending on speed etc. I have 1417 ks or 880 miles on it and bought it 3 months ago.

written by pooba42 on 22/10/2008

Love my Kymco Xciting 500. Easier and more convenient than a geared motorcycle. Lots of conveniences like cell phone charger, very secure ignition lock, great looking, and decent mpg.
Quick off the line; so quick in fact I had to adjust my throttle twist.
It takes a couple of minutes to warm up, nothing wrong with that. I either clean windscreen and gear-up or just look at her handsome lines.
Heavy weight gives it great stability on occasional freeway jaunts. I generally prefer the back roads as more pleasant and have the great fortune to live in central Texas with some of the best back country motorbike cruising roads around.
I purchased mine 2/08 and by summer's end had clocked nearly 10,000 miles. Those miles include some rain and windstorms, including one frigid norther at the end of February where the wind was incredibly strong.

Size, weight, and shape well matched to power, excellent performance compared with the other maxi-scooters I have owned including the Burgman 650 and Burgman 400 and Honda Silver Wing. Adjustable spanners and good brakes. 2009 Model also has fuel injection for 50+mpg. Very good value for the money and maybe the most fun you can have on a maxi-scooter. Dealer maintenance is very expensive....paid $424 for 600 mile checkup including new oil filter. Added a Roketa top box so now have enough storage.

I test drove one today and did about 10 miles around town and thru traffic. I was a good handling large scooter and the weight was alot lighter than I thought. The throttle response was very good and the transmission was very positive in take off, it did not hesitate and was smooth responding. This is a good maxi scooter for the money.

Bought the Kymco Exciting as my wifes first bike. It was very easy for her to learn to ride. We took it to the mountains in Colorado and it not only kept up but was out in front a lot of the time. Great around town and roadworthy as well.

“Have been riding my Kymco Xciting 500 for about 1...”

★★★☆☆

written by ecmcdougall on 08/06/2008

Have been riding my Kymco Xciting 500 for about 1 month now, time for a review.

First, the good:
It's been a blast to ride, it's heavy but surprisingly fast and very smooth. The upright position is good on the back, and it gives you "presence" on the road - you're able to look through the windows of even larger pickups ahead of you. The seat is too hard, but otherwise it's quite comfortable to ride, it's not fatiguing at all and requires very little muscle compared to a Honda motorcycle I rode many years ago. The controls are easy to use and in the right places except the horn - it's a bit too touchy and it's too close to the turn signal.

The engine starts very easily, and it's very quiet at idle and low speeds; great for my neighborhood. Twist the throttle and you get a satisfying growl; it's a single-lunger at heart and it sounds like it. It has a lot of "grunt" in the mid-ranges between about 20 and 70 MPH; I figure about 5-6 seconds to get up to speed. At 65 mph I'm using about 2/3 of the throttle; tach is at 6000 (redline is 8000).

Off the line it's slow, you won't be lifting the front wheel; it's like all automatic scoots.... but once the engine finally catches the back wheel it snaps your head back like a real bike. You'll still smoke just about anything on 4 wheels (although a Lotus definitely left me eating dust), anything with two wheels and a clutch and you're toast.

Fit and finish was ok, the panels and parts are well fitted and the paintwork was very good (but see my comments, below).

Now the bad:
A small fly in my otherwise tasty soup - the front fender (over the front wheel) spontaneously cracked and is now in the process of splitting itself in two; this started within the first 100 miles. Kymco is definitely not known for their warranty service, and they've pretty much told me I'm not getting a replacement because "it must be my fault". Sucks bobo, but as soon as I saw the split I knew they'd blame me, and it's my word against theirs. I'm repairing it with epoxy and a "Buy Suzuki" decal from the local bike shop. ;-))

The worst mechanical issue is it occasionally stalls when cold - it needs an adjustment to the choke (it comes off too quickly); unfortunately this is one thing that's not available (it's a sealed unit). Once it's warm it's fine, but a sudden stall while trying to turn a corner onto a busy road isn't nice.

Other problems are the speedometer and fuel gauge; these issues weren't unexpected, though, just about all the Kymco scoots have these problems as far as I can tell from my researches.

It's supposed to be a standard motorcycle speedo (it's an inductive type, unlike most scoots) but it's terribly inaccurate - with several hours of fine adjustments and tweaking I've finally gotten it to read 10 km/h higher than it's really moving; choices were that or no reading at all.

The fuel gauge is a joke, it doesn't budge until you're 1/3 down, and it's reading empty at 2/3 down. I don't bother looking for a gas station until the empty light is on, it means I still have a gallon left. Fuel economy is about 35-45 mpg depending on how I ride.

The only other negative I can come up with is service; it's hard to find a dealer willing to work on a scooter they didn't sell. Finding high quality service is even tougher. Kymco USA won't sell you parts (not even an oil filter) directly, it's a bit of a problem for those of us who have no Kymco dealers in the vicinity.

So, overall I'm giving it a 6, mostly because I got it for a lot less than MSRP; it's a lot better than the Chinese knockoffs I've seen, but it's not a Bergman either. I have no doubt it'll last a few years; it's not falling apart or anything, and when it comes time I'll be able to sell it for at least a bit and move on to a Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki.

Peace, y'all!
