I rang to request a number for a local Salon. I asked for Professional Beauty on the High street Barton on Humber. There are only 4 salons in Barton and only 1 on the High Street. The lady started reeling off the others until I said no just the high street one please. This was once she finally located Barton on Humber. “Absolute disgrace from an "allegedly" respectable company.”

On 30 August I was taken into hospital after a fall. I was in Lincoln, my wife was in Leeds and the only way she knew to find the number of the hospital was through Directory Enquiries. They put her straight through to the hospital and today I received my phone bill which includes a charge of £14.79 + VAT for what used to be a free service!!! One way to up your bill is for you to stay on the phone too long and the recorded message which is irrelivant probabaly costs around 1.50 before you even get to your requirement . I was charged £6.10 just to find out one number. Total rip off… Read Full Review

“Appaulling service - be warned.”

Called this number to get hold of my car insurance company in a hurry. First 15 seconds of the call was taken up by a pre-recorded message advertising other service. Then the operator said she had trouble finding the number (one of the leading insurers)which took the call over a minute. Then, unbelievably, another 15 seconds of pre-recorded advertising before the number was slowly dragged out. Result: 2 minute call costing £6.465. Ripp-off. … Read Full Review

“Total rip off”

Rang 118500 to try to find a phone number. Had the name and address of the person that I wanted to contact and the operator asked me to 'hang on a minute' whilst he looked for it. After a few minutes of 'umming' and 'erring', he told me, "Sorry, there is no number for that name and address in our records. Maybe they are registered with another phone company?" Your disabled friend needs to call and request an application form to register for a free directory enquiry service provided by BT.

Just got our phone bill - over £11 charges for 2 short calls to 118500!!!!!! Seems that BT charge £1.99/minute and charge for a full minute if you run only one second over. Will never, ever use this service again. Disgusted… Read Full Review

I work 4 bt 118500 and becos ur bills are high it is a premium rate service that is ok by ofcom, these are the goverment bodies that opened up the market and took away our 192 service, and bcos its competive market we have to compete with other providers! It's not a competitive market. If it was prices wouldn't be rising - their charges have doubled in three years. The abuse and bad language that I know operators receive does not excuse BT's policies of delibrately extending the length of the call.

If it was an ethical business then it would use that 13 second recorded message at the beginning to also give the charges.

“shocking rip off merchants!!”

disgusting !!made 4 calls to 118500 this month and now have an extra £30 to pay on my telephone bill!! they kept me on the phone as they couldn't find the number and also one call the number was redialled and the duration on my bill shows 0.00 and still they charged me £1.34 I will never use them again am outraged that I now have to find another £30 money that could be spent on my children !! considering they are such a profitable company there is no need to charge the amount they do . if I… Read Full Review

I have read all the reviews about 118 500 1. BT provide a FREE directory service for blind and disabled people, the number is 195; 2. If you ask how much the service costs you will be told; 3. If you want connected it is compulsory for the operator to advise you that it is £1.99pm 4. 118 118 has nothing to do with BT 5. Just found out that a call made through 118500 yesterday has been charged £58 plus. The operater asked very nicely if I wanted the call put through. Fine, maybe another 50p, so what. NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT £1.99 (OR ANY OTHER CHARGE) FOR DURATION OF CALL.
It is quite disgraceful that OFCOM who was supposedly "looking into it" some time ago, has done nothing.
Presumably this review "Get Your Facts Right" was written by a BT Spin Doctor.

“Huge Charges for 118 500 connected telephone calls”

I have been charged £34 for a 16min local call. I asked why this was and it seems that the charge, if you ask to be connected to a number obtained from 118 500 is £0.60 PLUS £1.99 per minute. My mum kept saying her bills were quite high so ended up going through them. What should have been no more than £34. Month for the full works were all in excess of £50. One bill showed she had been on the 118 500 line for 6 minutes, totally £16 in charges! Most charges were over £4, which in my view is typical of this country that allows such blatant thievery. “Daylight Robberry, borderline fraudulant service”

Just got a mobile bill for £65 which was a shock when it is normally £15 - the extra £50 was mostly made up of 118500 charges. I have been waiting months for BT to connect our phoneline and internet - had I had the internet I would not have had to use their 118500 service. I was under the impression that it was a flat rate fee of around 50p to gain a number and I never let them put me through. I agree completely! I mistakenly put this number on my home phone to use for Directory Enquiries as it was from BT, and have just got my present Bill. One call to this number cost me over £4, despite being on the line for 1.4minutes, and did NOT ask to be connected!! Get off your backsides OFCOM and close this service down!!. This is tantamount to EXTORTION by BT!! I will never use this so called "service" again. If anyone wants Directory Enquiries then ring 118365 - costs around 60 -80p in total

“Charged for two ghost 118500 calls”

My current bill has a charge for two supposed 118500 calls. Neither my partner nor I have ever used this service or were even familiar with the number to dial. BT insists the calls were made and I insist it was impossible. BT appear to be ignoring me and expect me to pay. So, even if you avoid this service, BT still makes a charge for it. Hi,

I too, have been charged for ghost calls by BT. On my latest bill there was a charge for calling 118 1118 (I didn't) plus charges to 2 0844 numbers that I know for sure that I didn't call! I went onto BT's online chat for help, but the operator kept insisting that the 1181118 was a legitimate call, and one of the 0844s was a heating company! The third number...they couldn't find out what company it was! I am going to write a formal complaint and send copies of false charges they have billed other people for, if necessary, I will go to the ombudsman - I will not be cowtowed by a large company like this, and will also be changing my service provider.
