“118500 Rip off”

Written on: 14/10/2013

My husband often uses 118500 from his mobile (with O2) when he is on the move and needs a number quickly. To day I have found a cost of £40.00 for one call to 118500 as it lasted 16 minutes. Apparently he was put through and although he was warned it would cost to be put through he was NOT told he would be charged for the duration of the call at an exorbitant rate.He presumed it would be a minimal charge like 50p! O2 takes no responsibility and short of calling 118500 and being charged another… Read Full Review

“Advice to callers to 118500”

Written on: 29/09/2013 by AlphaOmega1 (1 review written)

BT's clear policy is to artificially extend the length of the call and ensure that operators, to quote "Use EVERY opportunity possible on 118500 to get customers to accept connection." (the capitalisation is in the original internal memo). If callers say no or no thanks to the offer to be put through then the current practice is that "double offer could still be offered if you feel appropriate but it is not mandatory." Where callers say something like "No can I just have the number" or "No… Read Full Review

BT DIRECTORY ENQUIRIES IS NOW £2.35 per minute plus a 62p call connection charge. MY ADVISE IS TO USE GPO DIRECTORY ENQUIRIES AND PAY JUST 40P PER CALL FROM THE PIONEER OF THE TELEPHONE INDUSTRY. SO STUFF BT USE THE GPO OK!

“Expensive from Vodafone”

Written on: 24/09/2013 by mazvalencia (1 review written)

I rang to request a number for a local Salon. I asked for Professional Beauty on the High street Barton on Humber. There are only 4 salons in Barton and only 1 on the High Street. The lady started reeling off the others until I said no just the high street one please. This was once she finally located Barton on Humber. I declined the offer to be put through and received a text. Almost £8 for just over 2 minutes!!!! and I was only on that long because of her lack of knowledge and training. I… Read Full Review

“Absolute disgrace from an "allegedly" respectable company.”

Written on: 15/09/2013 by drsheret (1 review written)

On 30 August I was taken into hospital after a fall. I was in Lincoln, my wife was in Leeds and the only way she knew to find the number of the hospital was through Directory Enquiries. They put her straight through to the hospital and today I received my phone bill which includes a charge of £14.79 + VAT for what used to be a free service!!! This is not a service at all - it is a money making machine and I propose to raise it with OFCOM. To take advantage of people in this was is frankly… Read Full Review

“Appaulling service - be warned.”

Written on: 23/08/2013

Called this number to get hold of my car insurance company in a hurry. First 15 seconds of the call was taken up by a pre-recorded message advertising other service. Then the operator said she had trouble finding the number (one of the leading insurers)which took the call over a minute. Then, unbelievably, another 15 seconds of pre-recorded advertising before the number was slowly dragged out. Result: 2 minute call costing £6.465. Ripp-off. … Read Full Review

“Total rip off”

Written on: 20/08/2013

Rang 118500 to try to find a phone number. Had the name and address of the person that I wanted to contact and the operator asked me to 'hang on a minute' whilst he looked for it. After a few minutes of 'umming' and 'erring', he told me, "Sorry, there is no number for that name and address in our records. Maybe they are registered with another phone company?" There was a lot of background on the line, crackling, shuffling noises, as if someone was trying to make it sound like they were working… Read Full Review

“the other end of the phone!!”

Written on: 25/07/2013 by busby01 (1 review written)

I work 4 bt 118500 and becos ur bills are high it is a premium rate service that is ok by ofcom, these are the goverment bodies that opened up the market and took away our 192 service, and bcos its competive market we have to compete with other providers! I have experienced alot of people giving us wrong information so thats way its take us a little bit longer on the call, and also people that come to the phones that can not spell what they are looking for and have the name incorrect, some… Read Full Review

It's not a competitive market. If it was prices wouldn't be rising - their charges have doubled in three years. The abuse and bad language that I know operators receive does not excuse BT's policies of delibrately extending the length of the call.

If it was an ethical business then it would use that 13 second recorded message at the beginning to also give the charges.

My partner called 118 500 three times in a month. Each time the call was over 1 min. Total cost £15 for just over 3 mins! It seems the call will ALWAYS go over a minute so will notch up 2 x the £1.99 per min. Disgusting service… Read Full Review

“Disgusting Rip Off”

Written on: 29/04/2013 by killerx (5 reviews written)

I collapsed last week and was unable to walk and in a lot of pain fortunately a relative was at hand. It was decided we needed a doctor and browsed the phone book looking for G-Doc's telephone number. I was in an extreme amount of pain and the numbers for directory enquiries escaped me....192 sprang to mind but is of no use any more. Eventually after long worried discussion and my pain worsening the number 118500 sprang to mind and my 68 year old mother rang and had to wait a massive 10 minutes… Read Full Review

“Get your facts right people!”

Written on: 28/04/2013

I have read all the reviews about 118 500 1. BT provide a FREE directory service for blind and disabled people, the number is 195; 2. If you ask how much the service costs you will be told; 3. If you want connected it is compulsory for the operator to advise you that it is £1.99pm 4. 118 118 has nothing to do with BT 5. If you are given the wrong number you can get a refund for that call (depends on circumstances) … Read Full Review

Desmcdougall's Comment

Written on: 14/06/2013

Just found out that a call made through 118500 yesterday has been charged £58 plus. The operater asked very nicely if I wanted the call put through. Fine, maybe another 50p, so what. NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT £1.99 (OR ANY OTHER CHARGE) FOR DURATION OF CALL.
It is quite disgraceful that OFCOM who was supposedly "looking into it" some time ago, has done nothing.
Presumably this review "Get Your Facts Right" was written by a BT Spin Doctor.

“Huge Charges for 118 500 connected telephone calls”

Written on: 09/04/2013

I have been charged £34 for a 16min local call. I asked why this was and it seems that the charge, if you ask to be connected to a number obtained from 118 500 is £0.60 PLUS £1.99 per minute. The moral to the story DO NOT SAY YES when asked if you want to be connected, dial the number yourself. … Read Full Review
