Completely agree! My mum did exactly the same thing (they seem to think these numbers are free). £34 for about 13 minutes. I've email the Ombudsman. Old people are very vulnerable to this!

JUST RECIEVED MY DADS PHONE BILL ON LINE WAS SHOCKED TO SEE ONE CALL WAS £30 for 15 mins looked up the number could not believe it was BT my dad is 81 havent even told him yet never thought BT could stoop so low as to rip the oaps off my god there should be laws againt this but the one good thing is now i know i will be able to cancel BT as will a lot of other people spread the word because i will oh and had to give star to complain what a joke… Read Full Review

“What a rip off to find out how to report BT landline...”

Just had my phone bill - 18 quid for 3 calls I made to find out how to report an ongoing fault on a BT landline to someone elses home phone. The fault is still not repaired - my 87 year old mother who is unwell has now been without a phone for 9 days. BT this is disgraceful behaviour all round - what are you up to? Shocking. Have just had my phone bill and was shocked to find two calls to this number totalling over £80 . My stepfather who I live with has made the calls but wasn't aware that if connected the call duration remains on their tariff. What a complete con!! This should be made so much clearer at the beginning of the call that they are going to charge over 50p a minute if they connect your call. An absolute disgrace!!! “cheats "connected" my call!!!!”

I asked 118500 for my local trading standards number and was given a fax number with the wrong area code! Phoned straight back ,asked for a refund. Gave my details to "understanding" BT 118500 operator. She seemed nice but extremely dim and kept me talking for ages whilst attempting to find the number for a second time! “Wrong phone number”

Called to get the number of a restaurant. Called this number over and over again but got no answer. Waited til I got home and checked online and found out they had given me the wrong number. “Nothing British about BT”

BT used to stand for good British service. You used them because your mum did and they were so established. The 118500 service is a shocking example of abuse of public trust and how low BT have sunk. I am an intelligent and reasonably savvy person but I was shocked by the cost of 2 calls to this number even when I never let them out me through. Vulnerable people must be really getting ripped off. “Absolute scandal”

I have just come home from visiting my partially sighted, very aged aunt. She has spent £454 in 3 months on this directory because she does not know how much it is costing. I found one call lasting 29 minutes costing £72!!! the phone is her only lifeline but this is just sickening. How they are allowed to get away with it I just don't know. “Rip off”

Just seen my mums phone bill , getting on a bit, denies using 118500 but I think her memories going. 8 calls to 118500 total £114 plus vat ! Tried to block it by ringing 150, can't do it. “118500 Rip off”

My husband often uses 118500 from his mobile (with O2) when he is on the move and needs a number quickly. To day I have found a cost of £40.00 for one call to 118500 as it lasted 16 minutes. Apparently he was put through and although he was warned it would cost to be put through he was NOT told he would be charged for the duration of the call at an exorbitant rate.He presumed it would be a minimal charge like 50p! STOP THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY GO TO BTS PREDESSOR POST OFFICE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FOR YOUR DIRECTORY ENQUIRIES ON 118855 ALL YOU WILL PAY IS FOURTY PENCE WHILE BT WOULD BE TEN POUND SO GO TO THE GPO AND SAVE A FORTUNE!

“Advice to callers to 118500”

BT's clear policy is to artificially extend the length of the call and ensure that operators, to quote "Use EVERY opportunity possible on 118500 to get customers to accept connection." (the capitalisation is in the original internal memo). If callers say no or no thanks to the offer to be put through then the current practice is that "double offer could still be offered if you feel appropriate but it is not mandatory." BT DIRECTORY ENQUIRIES IS NOW £2.35 per minute plus a 62p call connection charge. MY ADVISE IS TO USE GPO DIRECTORY ENQUIRIES AND PAY JUST 40P PER CALL FROM THE PIONEER OF THE TELEPHONE INDUSTRY. SO STUFF BT USE THE GPO OK!

I rang to request a number for a local Salon. I asked for Professional Beauty on the High street Barton on Humber. There are only 4 salons in Barton and only 1 on the High Street. On 30 August I was taken into hospital after a fall. I was in Lincoln, my wife was in Leeds and the only way she knew to find the number of the hospital was through Directory Enquiries. They put her straight through to the hospital and today I received my phone bill which includes a charge of £14.79 + VAT for what used to be a free service!!! “Appaulling service - be warned.”

Called this number to get hold of my car insurance company in a hurry. First 15 seconds of the call was taken up by a pre-recorded message advertising other service. Then the operator said she had trouble finding the number (one of the leading insurers)which took the call over a minute.
