“Avoid like the plague”

written by Diwise2 on 14/02/2023

I paid £100 a month to harrington brooks and then Gregory Pennington for the for 5 years. They stopped taking the payment in 2019. I assumed the debts was paid I had no letters or anything off them afterwards then 2 years later start getting debt collectors after me for a debt I paid through them! Now being threatened with a ccj which I am disputing. Emailed them and was told the figures had been emailed to me which surprise surprise they haven't! Where has my money gone? I paid around £6000 in total in good faith. Now I wish I'd never heard of either of them

I sent an important email to Gregory Pennington and neither received an automatic "received your email someone will contact you soon etc" or an actual reply. I did mention that it was important but still ignored. The last time I had to deal with them I had the very same problem. I will pass it on to my Money Advisor to contact them on my behalf. Totally incompetent staff!

“Great until the end!”

If I could give this company zero stars I would. I'd been with them 13 years and made payments including there on time every month. When it come down to my final payment I was told a final figure which took them 3 weeks to get to me when I was told 2 weeks and I was happy with the figure but quite surprise at how low it was and so I questioned it an dI was told that thi swas correct, so I paid it and went though the whole closing the account down and them thanking me for using them and well done for paying it off. About a week later I get a call from a guy who tells me that they have made a mistake on the final figure and I owe £167 still due to a system error. Took it further and now they say they will take a bit off but not pay it all even though its there own error. Over the years ive paid then around £3500 to manage it and they havent! DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!

“Unsympathetic and patronising staff. AVOID”

written by Guest12299996bbbhy on 05/04/2018

Monthly fee is crazy for what they do and is not worth it. Go to a debt charity. Luckily was able to clear our debts recently, but was looking to change before this happened. No care at all and the yearly review is awful. Need to re train staff to be more sympathetic. Also constantly wanted us to start an iva. So in other words changing our unsecured debts into a secure debt. DO NOT SIGN UP with them. Go to a company that doesn't charge! You pay them thousands for a poor and frankly useless service.

“AVOID”

I was with GP for 4 years, during which I did think the admin fee was too high, but I wanted their help so I thought it was ok. After some years I decided to figure out where I was at and wanted to contact my creditors to see if an early payment might be possible. I asked for a statement of account from GP and when calculating total paid, minus the admin fee / VS what had been cleared, there was a discrepancy of £1,500 that seemed to have vanished with no trace. It took GP almost 2 months to get to the bottom of it - To their credit they did write off one creditor and obtain £1000 worth of refunds from others, but this wouldnt have happened if they managed the account properly. Moved over to Stepchange, and have cleared more in 1 year than i did in the 4 with GP.

“Debt free for the first time in my life!”

★★★★★

written by Peytonu297 on 21/07/2017

Great advice and very easy to work with. Affordable payments and a simple way to become debt free. They do charge a management fee but it's worth it as they literally take everything off you, all the stress and all the worry and negotiate with your lenders on your behalf. It was the best thing I ever did! Thank you Gregory Pennington and team. I would recommend anyone who is worried about debt to give them a call and see how they can help. Its completely turned my life around.

“do not be fooled debt management plan”

★☆☆☆☆

written by frankie2016 on 27/06/2017

i have been in a debt management plan with GP for 8 years. Now they are saying I cannot stay with them even although my circumstances are the same as last year. I now have to deal with my creditors myself after paying GP for 8 years with never a missed payment. I have a complex situation but I have explained everything to them and still they say I cannot afford my monthly payments. To cut a long story short I have been left in the lurch here, although they tried to advise me of what to do next. So shocking being back to the start and having to find another debt plan after paying them for 8 years Mot happy at all with this lot. twisting my words and saying the company policy has changed . Do not go near them use a free service as they have advised me called money advice service. they should have gave me this number 8 years ago . it does not make sense. So angry I am putting in a formal complaint to the Ombudsman

“Hooray for GP! ”

written by Emma-Dilemma on 06/05/2017

Oh my goodness! It has been 9 long years but I am now officially debt free thanks to the fantastic help and support of the GP staff! I remember how sick and consumed I felt all those years ago like I was drowning or suffocating. Getting in contact with GP was the single best decision I have ever made! I've read other reviews about how terrible they are etc but I can honestly hand on heart say that they are the most friendly, helpful, encouraging, polite, understanding team of people I have ever had to deal with! There used to be a time when I would ignore phonecalls from the bank etc but not with these guys, there's no need, they are here to help! Over the years, they have made sure that I have been able to afford my repayments and still have enough money for myself each month, they were supportive when I was poorly and signed off work meaning my income would be reduced. They actually make conversation and take an interest in you as a person! They were understanding when I had my cat put to sleep, when my grandad passed away, the music festivals I go to, they even wish me happy birthday every year haha! Seriously though, I don't understand the other reviewers saying this company are terrible because they are not, they are absolutely fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat! I was at absolute rock bottom but now, I'm on top of the world! I can't stress enough how absolutely fantastic this company is. Once again, absolutely massive thanks to each and every person who has enabled me to get through the last 9 years! If I could, I'd give each and every one of you a massive hug!! Forget the negative reviewers, this is the only review you need! If you are considering whether to let GP help you, just give them a call, have a chat with them, you owe it to yourself to get out of your pickle! Thanks for reading and thanks one last time to all the staff at Gregory Pennington xxxxx

I've been with Gregory Pennington for nearly 5 years dealing with my debt management plan and they have been brilliant throughout. If ever I had a problem with a creditor they would sort it out straight away and take all the hassle away from me. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of help financially as they do an amazing job.

“Terrible Staff”

Young, inexperienced, patronising staff who talk down to you. I honestly don't know what they do for their management fee. I moved away and instead negotiated with my creditors who all accepted the terms without being patronising. However I also know someone who is with Step Change and they also seem very good. GP don't follow through on the promises they make when they are trying to win your custom.

I’m sorry that this has been your experience with Gregory Pennington.

I am very concerned to read your comments, as they do not seem to reflect the service we offer, which can be seen from the vast majority of reviews here on Review Centre as well as the feedback we receive from customers independently.

We’d like to wish you all the best in becoming debt free in the future.

“Hard at first but end is good”

I decided to do something about my debts, instead of carrying on struggling. £13500 was a lot. It took gregory pennington about a year to negotiate zero intreast and thats when it really started paying off. Having the bank account with Think money helps. You know excatly where you stand with your money. All your bills and debt payment go into one account and you get left with the money you can spend in another account. Simple. They alwsys try and do the best way of getting out of debt too. I came off the plan early as they said it was the best option as I had enough funds to pay it off without anymore payments into the debt plan.

“THANK YOU for everything”

written by eoBowen75 on 28/02/2017

Today is a very strange and emotional day as I have just had my last call with Gregory Pennington as I am now DEBT FREE thanks to their help. Many, many years ago when I was getting letters each day, calls and people turning up at my door and had no idea what to do other than get one last loan for a flight ticket and leave I made a call to GP to see what could be done. It is by far one of the best calls I have ever made and I still remember how happy I felt when I came of the call and a lady saying it is going to be OK. They made what I had to do very clear and made the process simple, very pain free and most importantly affordable. Almost straight away the calls stopped, the bad letters stopped and no one knocked on my door again. I have always spoke to great staff, understanding and supportive and I will and indeed have recommended them to anybody that has been in the same situation. In the kindest way I hope never to have to speak with them again but I wish you nothing but success in the future. Thank you to all of the GP team.

“Gregory Pennington: Excellent Company with Excellent...”

★★★★★

written by zvRafferty378 on 14/02/2017

Dear Gregory Pennington Staff, When I initially fell into debt all those years ago, I thought there was no hope and I did not see any way out. I was borrowing more money to pay off other debts which then landed me in further debt, things were going from bad to extremely bad. I then did an internet search and found yourselves, so I decided to give you a call. From the very first member of staff that I spoke to all I can remember is how patient, understanding and non judgemental that you were, you actually showed empathy in your voice over the phone - no other company has made me feel like I was worth listening to especially considering what I was going through with all the money worries, but somehow your adviser made me feel at ease and that everything was going to be okay. When I then realised that I had to make yourselves an initial large payment for your debt services I was quite concerned, however, again on speaking to an adviser my mind was put at ease after everything was explained step by step. When I then started my Debt Management Plan I can't believe how relieved I felt, you had taken all the stress away, you dealt with everything, creditors, phone calls, paperwork, and even got the interest frozen on my accounts after negotiating with my creditors. You were absolutely amazing!!!! you also always kept me up to date with my account and asked if there was anything more that you could do for me which I always thought was brilliant because to you the client matters, and you made me feel important. Now years down the line, it's Tuesday 14th February 2017 and I have cleared all my debts today thanks to you and your wonderful staff. I am so happy :) In all my years of dealing with Gregory Pennington, I have never spoken to anyone rude or unhelpful or unknowledgeable. Your staff are EXCELLENT!! and it has been my pleasure to deal with such wonderful people, you are all a credit to your company and you should all be so proud of that, each and every one of you. So, from the bottom of my heart thank you so very much, you all saved me from literal despair, when I needed help the most you were all there and I will be eternally grateful. My sincerest regards and thanks, Miss Narinder Sira

The advisors are always extremely helpful, they never make you feel bad for the situation you are in and make paying off your debts extremely simple. They don't constantly ring you and only contact you if they need to. I wouldn't have been able to pay off my debts so quickly without their help.

What are their charges? Do they charge a lump sum set-up fee ie 50% or 100% of first payment. Also, how much do they charge monthly? Is it a set amount or a percentage amount? Thanks

While I used them I paid £100 per month to them, of that, they took a £30 fee and distributed the rest to my debtors! They do all the negotiating with them and all the letters and phone calls just stopped! I don't recall there being an up front fee but if you give them a call, they will explain things to you! I hope you get yourself sorted by whatever means, debt is no fun! I was clear from £10k in 6 years through the help of Gregory Pennington and a Think money bank account! Really helped me!

You really are not considering using these jokers? You are better off sitting down with you bank managers and creditors and talking through affordable payments with them. They are very understanding and as soon as they realise you are struggling, they will help you, I promise... Gregory Pennington are an absolute joke and a rip off and what's more they word their conversations so cleverly that you will never win any battle with them. They have a lump sum set up fee which is a joke of a cost for administration charges so their staff can log all of you details incorrectly and mis manage you payments and then a monthly fee which I think is a %age of what you pay (for me it was around 20% and they do not communicate with your creditors and they tell you to ignore the RED LETTERS that just KEEP ON COMING.... DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - SPEAK YO YOUR CREDITORS YOURSELF AND SAVE A FORTUNE. ASLO - THERE ARE GOVERNMENT FUNDED COMPANIES THAT DO NOT CHARGE TO DO THE SAME THING - STEER EXTREMELY CLEAR AT ALL COSTS!!!

The first payment is there set up and they take a percentage of each payment. If you do a job for someone do you not expect to get paid! Well these people are working for me so why shouldnt i pay a fee. All letters from companys stopped all interest stopped. All i have ever had is help . Helped us get ppi payments from past loans didnt ask for any of the money i we didnt loose any money paying another company we got 100%:back. I have no complaints have always been up front about costs. I have been with the free goverment run companies and ended up in more debt because they didnt stop the interest on my accounts they have to make their money somewhere. At the end of the day its your choice but i can only comment on my own experiences. Only 8 months to go and im debt free.

Gregory Pennington was fantastic and supported my situation perfectly. It depends on each individual’s case. I did speak to my bank manager and other creditors without any support so I then went down the debt management programme and did decide on Gregory Pennington. They done exactly what they said they would do and supported us through a challenging period. They are not the cheapest there are more economical services out there but cannot comment on these services. The amount you pay is a percentage of your monthly payment capped at a certain amount. In summary my 5 year experience with this organisation was exceptional I know I could have got the same service cheaper but did not want to risk the fantastic service I was receiving. Hope this helps?

Thank you for your question, there is no upfront or set up fee for a Debt Management Plan. Our management fee is 18.5% of your regular monthly payment to the Debt Management Plan (DMP) subject to a minimum fee of £38.50, and a maximum of £90. This fee covers the monthly running of your DMP, including negotiating with lenders, distributing payments and taking care of all correspondence between you both. This fee also covers regular reviews of your circumstances - normally once every 12 months, or whenever your circumstances change. If your situation does change, and you’re unable to keep up with your DMP, simply get in touch, and we’ll attempt to re-negotiate payments on your behalf. I hope this helps.

They charge a monthly management fee. I paid £46, plus the money to be repaid to debtors. I'm not sure if the fee varies depending on the amount you are repaying.

Dont do it! use stepchange or contact your creditors yourself, they will be more than helpful, extortionate fee with little service
