bar staff pleasant.Ate several times over three weeks whilst staying locally.First time food over cooked, second time no food available as gas off but no cold food offered.Third time menu vastly reduced and service slow as the one member of staff was having to tend the bar and also serve food and people were searching for staff to serve drink. On two occasions we overheard complaints from others about cold food. Also have never had to pay extra for veg in a pub before. The wine list was also… Read Full Review

Well worth a visit now that it has been reopened under new managment. Food is spot on, the chef really knows what he is doing. The pub is like 4 different pubs in one. Lots of differently laid out areas, plenty of character. Beer well kept… Read Full Review

New management in 2010, good value meal - nothing in the fridge come here - you can get steak & chips here for £8.95 as good as most places that charge £12-£14 for the same. Lovely puds too, limited choice as yet as chief is new. BEER IS GREAT!… Read Full Review

Used Square and Compass For a business presentation and lunch. Function room was the right size for my needs, staff were helpful and friendly. Set meal afterwards was served outside normal hours without complaint, and was simple but delicious - enjoyed by all 20 members of the group. I wont hesitate to entertain at the Square and Compass again… Read Full Review

Service was always poor, management not up to the job and blamed the staff for her failings. Never mind, it's gone out of business now, what a surprise… Read Full Review

I needed to be convinced to try the Square and Compass again as I had had a couple of bad experiences there but I was persuaded! However, never again. I found the service to be very slow.
The food wasn't worth waiting for either, bland and boring and overpriced for what I got.
I don't expect to spend 3- 4 hours over lunch unless I am having a great time with friends and enjoying the conversation not hours because the service is so disappointing.
I thought their customer service was poor when I… Read Full Review

I have to say, I've read some of these comments and I can't see why everyone is disappointed with the square and compass. I've had meany meals there and they've all been really tasty, cooked to perfection and the staff are very friendly!… Read Full Review

My daughter returned with tales of woe from this place! When asked if they would like vegetables with their meal, there was no mention of an extra charge. Who charges extra on top of an already expensive main course for a bowl of veg? When the issue was raised at the till, the staff member seemed rude and dismissive towards her… Read Full Review

Went to Square and Compass for Sunday lunch with another couple and a total of five children yesterday. We arrived at 12 and left at 3pm - it took 3 hours to serve a main course and puddings (not starters or coffee involved). I thought the food was extremely poor, overcooked, wilted vegetables etc which you have to pay £2 each for a small bowl. At the end of the meal, when my husband was paying the bill, a member of staff came over and seemingly rudely suggested that our children were being… Read Full Review

I was disappointed with the service. Place did not appear to be busy but they twice forgot to bring me drinks that I ordered. About £10 for a 5" bowl of fish pie with no garnish or veggies. I feel this is poor. Had to order vegetables separately. £2.50 for two pieces of broccoli and 2 pieces of cauliflower.
Ordered the Ham, Duck Eggs and chips from menu. That's eggs plural. I got eggs singular. When I pointed this out to the staff I was greeted with a smile and silence. No apology.
I… Read Full Review

We've been to the Square and Compass before and had always had pleasant experiences, until today. We went for a family lunch at 12.30pm and had to leave at 3.30pm without finishing our meal because they wouldn't warm up a baby bottle for our daughter! The rest of our family finally finished their meal at 4.20pm. I felt the wait between courses was unacceptable. They apparently have a new policy that they will not heat ANY food brought in from outside, which included a jar of baby food for our… Read Full Review

After being recommended this place I found it very disappointing. The main courses were luke warm at best, they took an age to take orders and we had a 45 min wait between main and sweet. I thought the sweets seemed over priced making the meal and visit very poor for me. We certainly won't go again… Read Full Review

I thought the service was very poor - we had extremely long waits between courses and it appeared that we were forgotten about. We came based on a recommendation - I think he must have been the only customer on that day! I will not be revisiting this pub again and would not recommend it to anyone… Read Full Review

The Square and Compass in North Rigton gives warm, friendly, relaxed and traditional English pub atmosphere; not over-bearing and pretentious like some places nor down-market and systemised like many other chain pubs. Good food at a fair price in comfortable surroundings… Read Full Review

We ended up going without the coffees we'd ordered - the waitress neglected to tell us the coffee machine had been de-calcifying for the past 2.5 hrs. But this is a minor hiccup in an otherwise enjoyable lunch. Will go again. :-)… Read Full Review

As a family we decided to try the Square and Compass restaurant for a Christmas get together on Monday December 3rd. What a disappointment! We had travelled from Wales, York, Ilkley, and Otley. We will give this restaurant a wide berth in future. There were several items off the menu as early as 12:30. Of the six meals requested only three were edible… Read Full Review

I don't understand these people who have good things to say about the food or the service at the Square and Compass in North Rigton. I would have rather gone to Burger King last Friday (17th August 2007). The "waitress" didn't so much show us to our table as point us in the right direction. When reading out the specials from a piece of paper in her hand, she couldn't read the chef's writing, so I helped her read it.
I could wax lyrical about the rest of it: about how the Lamb Henry was dry… Read Full Review

We went to the Square and Compass restaurant in North Rigton for Sunday lunch, and found it to be not only completely overpriced, but also seemingly half defrosted, so not freshly prepared. Our waitress was polite and helpful, and seemed genuinely apologetic about the standard of the food and the 45 minute wait we had to endure for our starters. It appeared that there were only certain staff manning the bar, which meant that others were simply milling around instead, with nothing to do while we… Read Full Review
