I have been banking with HSBC (Midland Bank Originally) for 45 years. Now that I am 62 and have a hip problem I need to move to a home on ground level because I cannot cope with stairs. I own my present home outright but its value is not enough to purchase the home I require. I was refused a small mortgage over a short term. HSBC ARE NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY!

“Rejected bank account opening when I have good salary ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by s2msung on 24/04/2013

I am a british citizen and earnmore than 50K . My bank acount application was rejected on the basis that I have unsecured lending ( a student loan of 35K). How do they expect a student to pay back loan if they stop them to have a bank account. Shame on you HSBC. They use some useless tools whereas they dont even check who and what the person actually does. The qualification and the contribution to the society. Instead of helping peoplein bad times, when they are not allowing a person like me to open a bank account which is not even asking for loans, I pity the ones who can earn as much. I will never open HSBC bank account. You just lost the best ever client.

“Very Bad Customer Service!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SmithHelen on 04/01/2013

I ve been an HSBC customer for almost three years now (since I first came to the UK) had a passport account and was happy in general with the bank. Since I was new to the country I could only open a passport account, but as I graduated an dstarted working here I became a permanent resident entered the electoral roll and only the rest... so finally it was time for me to upgrade my account to a simple current account (so that i would stop paying the ridiculous amount of 10 pounds a month for the plain use of the account no added benefits no nothing!) how fooled was I! After being their customer for 2 years I went over there and requested for my account to switch I gave them my (brand new) National Insurance number, my electoral roll registration, my tax code, even my renting agreement and bills, however nothing was good enough for them and they kept insisting that they could not open a bank account for me. So I just left and told them that I would close my bank account. Went over to Barclay's and 15 minutes later my new bank account was ready!!1 I honestly believe that the only reason they did not want to alter my account was to take the charges and provide nothing to me (this monthly fee is usually equivalent to premier account as I found out later on)!I transferred almost all my funds (but kept the account open for a month until all my direct debits were transferred to the new account) and in the mean while the HSBC customer service team dared to call me to ask me whether I would be interested in updating my passport account since I ve had it for 2 years! Needless to say that the heard a hand full!!!!

“They gave Internet scammers my money!”

Internet scammers who got hold of my expired debit card details were able extract money from my account. HSBC did not give a toss and I have now had to get the police involved.

“HSBC Are A Absolutely Appalling Bank! Avoid At All...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Grivien on 09/11/2012

HSBC are a truely terrible bank. They charge constantly, they are obsessed with charging. My husband was with them since the early 70s when they were midland bank. They were ok for a long time. Now they are money grabbing and charge obsessed. We are switching now. Looking for another bank. We don't have a formal overdraft, they would'nt give us one. We go over a lot. This partly due to their obsessive charging. They froze his bank account when in credit. Cancelled direct debits. Refused cheques. At one point we were in credit and they would'nt let us spend it. We had to borrow money from my brother because we had 0 available money but credit in the bank. They return direct debits, then charge us. We had a big car payment direct debit, and they charged for the direct debit itself! They're money grabbers. Desperate, lying, money grabbers. If we did'nt have those excessive charges, we would'nt go overdrawn most of the time. They account for more money going out of the account, and cause the going over, than the direct debits, etc, do. I did a budget sheet online. We have surplus money. But we don't see it with these money grabbers. More comes in than goes out, but you would'nt know it from the bank account. We are leaving them as soon as we can. Even if we have to go to basic bank account, and I have one in mind if it comes to it, we'll probabely have more money than when we do with these money grabbers! I only gave 1 star because I had to! They get no stars from us! Avoid this bank at all costs! They are charge obsessed! Do not go near this bank, because they cause you problems, then charge you for them! DO NOT GO NEAR THIS BANK!!! DO NOT GO NEAR THIS BANK!!! DO NOT GO NEAR THIS BANK!!!

“It's been a long time since I was this lost for words ...”

Get this; I have income over £100k and bank with another bank, not HSBC. However, I have a business account with HSBC (limited company for last 2.5 years - operated the account flawlessly). Never missed payment on a personal bill either, ever ... since I first started working in 1991. Aug 2012, wanted to open a personal current account and a deposit account, to make it easier to switch monies from the business account to personal account;went in with £10k cheque to open up the account. Thought it would be simple ... never haver I been so wrong! They started asking me all sorts of stuff about how much my mortgage is, how much equity I have, I told them wanted simple current and savinsg account, had £10k to pay in but they were not interested. They kept trying to sell me a "premier account" I neither want nor need; then at the end we said we did not want to take out a credit card, just wanted a second current and deposit account and they did not want to know ... practically showed us the door. If that's how they treat solvent people with cash, goodness only knows what they are like if you go to them for a loan / mortgage etc.

“Used to be excellent but now want to charge for...”

written by salmondrive on 28/06/2012

I have banked with HSBC for over 20 years and in the beginning the personal service and account was excellent. Even now the online banking is easy and secure. However, about 4 years ago they decided to change their policies and rescind an overdraft facility I had held up till then. Since that date all thay have attempted to do is get charges from me at every opportunity. Loyalty counts for nothing I am in process of cancelling account and moving to co-op whose customer service is better and account/policy fairer.

“I love HSBC. ”

★★★★★

written by on 14/04/2011

I love HSBC.
People on here complain about the bank charges however if you compare them to other banks... especially Lloyds TSB they charge no where near as much. Lloyds charge by the day and don't tell you till you are a few days in. HSBC charge if you go over once. HSBC will allow up to £10 without charging. Lloyds charged my partner £6 a day for 10 days once because he went £1 over drawn and didn't even ring to warn him. Nor did he get the money back. You won't see other banks do this.
HSBC let you off for the first £10. It is fair that if you go over a contract you should be charged a fair amount and ok £25 is quite a lot if you only go over a small amount but if you ring them they help you. If its a first time they generally let you off.
Internet banking is also good with HSBC and it makes it so easy to watch your accounts. Also you can do over the phone banking with them. Try googling say no to 0870 and you will find their landline on there.
I hope HSBC never changes. I've been with them for 16 years and will carry on banking with them!

I have been banking with HSBC for 16 years (since it was Midland Bank) and also have opened an account with them for my 2yr old. I have always been really happy with them and the customer service has always been great.

Recently they seem to be more concerned with big corporate accounts and are really not bothered with dealing with the little people. Getting to a branch is becoming increasingly difficult, branches are having their opening times reduced and other small branches are closed. My nearest branch is now in a city centre which is always really busy and costs a fortune in car parking! I am certainly looking for somewhere else to take my custom!

“ have had a bank account with HSBC for years, I only...”

written by on 23/07/2010

have had a bank account with HSBC for years, I only have a £250 overdraft with them. I have previously had a credit card with them with a limit of £6500 and a loan of £100000 which I have now paid off. I have run into a few unexpected payments over the last couple of months so I went into my local branch today so ask if they could increase my overdraft to £750 to cover this months bills. My request was declined for some reason but they then went on to ask if I wanted my old credit card back!!! So they won't give me £500 extra on my overdraft but are willing to offer me £6500 on a credit card with them. Obviously I refused.

I am totally disgusted by this and am now seriously considering switching bank accounts.

A very unhappy HSBC customer!

written by dandidit on 15/07/2010

I have been banking with HSBC for 3 years now. I have a current account, savings account and credit card which I have always managed very well.

I had a couple of weeks of financial difficulty recently, I went over my overdraft limit by £200 for 5 days. HSBC charged me £200.

I called their customer service team (a translator would have been helpful) to see if there is anything they can do as I can't afford to pay these charges and didn't want my credit rating to be affected by not paying them. I explained that I've never had a bank charge, always paid my credit card on time, but they we're not willing to help me.

They are a complete bunch of useless idiots we're not willing to help me in a temporary time of difficulty, even though I have been a good customer for a long time.

Stay well clear. I have now paid the charges and closed my account.

written by on 05/07/2010

I have banked with HSBC all my banking life, and never having required an overdraft or loan they have always been fine. However I recently got a new job that required me to relocate and in need of some temp funds. Clearly having the money avalible to repay any debt within 3 weeks time (at the time of my first pay cheque), they declined to offer me any lending atall without reason.

If this isnt a good enough reason for an overdraft I dont know what is. The only other point I would mention is that the girl who served me seemed equally shocked that the computer said no. But thats half the problem isnt it, the computer said no.

“Have been with HSBC since 2006. At one point they had...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/06/2010

Have been with HSBC since 2006. At one point they had all my personal and business banking. Was with their premier service, and that was when the problems started:

All my accounts were down-graded without my knowledge. The neither wrote nor telephoned. This was when I had used the premier debit card to pay for a family holiday over Christmas. Guess what, at the last minute found out we were not covered with travel insurance. Less than happy.

I was turned down for a company overdraft, even though I had never operated in debt for 4 years and the amount was mediocre.

Finally my personal overdraft was revoked and I had a detrimental mark placed on my credit record. Again without any correspondence.

HSBC are the epitome of BAD service. The use offshore call centers, where the drones have no power to make decisions that are off script. You are unable to talk to a manager. If you enjoy banging your head against a wall HSBC are the bank for you.

All accounts closed. I have raised a case with the Financial Ombudsman.

“I have been with HSBC for about two years now, for...”

written by on 21/05/2010

I have been with HSBC for about two years now, for both business and personal. They always been helpful and I think their offer for business customers is very good value per money. The online banking is very easy to use and they recently made it even better. The business online banking is multi-user, so you can enable another person to operate the accounts setting individual limits for each user for each account, which can be really helpful if your business is big or geographically spread.

I read a lot of bad reviews about HSBC. I remember when I opened my account it states in the terms that a non arranged overdraft will cost you £25 in fees, so I have been warned. I think that as a general concept, we should always run accounts in credit, not in the overdraft, and that even if we have a credit card we should make a cash forecast and buy only if we really need to, and if we expect the money to flow in.

I think all banks are businesses, so they make money on fees. In general, many people I know should be more responsible about how they run their banking accounts and their financial life in general.

The customer care team is always polite and helpful, and I never waited on the phone for longer than a minute.

I reccommend HSBC, specially business direct account, is really good and there are no maintainance fees, which is great for a business account.
