Just going to write a simple review to advise people NOT to take this card out. The interest is a joke, the charges are a joke, They will have your financial status in tatters. Just look at the money saving expert forum and see the threads on this company. I still owe them a good bit of money and I just pay every month now but they add little things in that take away what ever money you pay back. Because I was gullible when I was a bit younger when I got made redundant I could not keep up being out of work only able to pay a few months on JSA, Which at this time they still charged unknown things on the card and at no point did they help when I was made redundant !

I am Vanquis customer for 4 years with a gold card limit of £3000. never got charges and pay full balance by direct debit if I use the card. Good customer service, had no probs with them.

That is not true, they may charge you interest if you dont pay your balance in full but they do not charge to use the card on purchases. Please be honest!

“Bankrupt to Excellent Credit rating with this card”

Got this card about 2 years after opting for bankruptcy due to unmanageable levels of debt and ludicrously unhelpful lenders. I went from a £500 limit up to £1000 in 4 months, and then up to £1750 4 months after that. Mine fluctuates quite a lot, depending on the time of the month that I check my score.

Where this is the only line of credit I have, if I check at the end of the month before I have paid the balance, my total used credit is considered very high, dropping my rating like a stone.

Try checking a week or so after you have paid to give the decrease in utilised credit a chance to update.

To get an increas, you need to spend on the card regularly and pay balance off in full, within a year you will have £3000 credit limit.

So you go bankrupt,then apply for credit,people like you don't deserve a second chance! It's a pity your so called spending money didn't go towards your creditors. All you had to do is go to the citizens advice or go to a solicitors ever of them would of advised you. Oh and a score of 980 means nothing try apply for a mainstream lender and you'll be declined,simply because your bankruptcy will still be showing for at least two more years!!

“Worst customer service EVER”

Do help you build your credit if you've not had any before but seriously hard work should you move/get married. I got married 2 years ago and unless I send them my original wedding cert or pay for a solicitor to authorise a copy they won't change my name- have offered to send scanned copy, proof of new name(scanned passport/utility bills etc)but refused to do. “Increase mess up ”

Before they increase your limit they tell you this by letter. It clearly states. If you keep within your limit or not get too close to the limit, you will get the increase. I you clearly did the opposite, thats why they cancelled the increase.

Well done! Compass209. Same with me, can't bash them and never had a problem with them. Some people just never learn from previous mistakes. People have to realise that credit cards are borrowed monies, not gifts, they have to be paid back.

“Just try to pay off this card!”

Hi - our son got into problems with credit card and we stepped in to help. Every other card company gave us an outstanding balance which we could just pay off - end of story...... Vanquis however would not give a final balance to enable us to pay the card off - they just gave a vague amount then said that further interest would be added in the next month. hi Vespa, i too have the same issues with vanquis, and lodged a complaint with the ombusman 8 months ago.Im still waiting to see if they can resolve the problems, because i have been plaqued by phone calls from vanquis, and dont feel i can take much more What was your outcome with the ombusman? i was told that they never rule against vanquis, so im not holding my breath, apparently they are not as neautral as they make out.

God you're right there. I did the same thing and shock of all shocks the Ombudsman ruled in favour of Vanquis even after saying they didn't understand many of their practises. Bankers all in it together.

ombudsman service was ok, they negotiated £25 compensation, not a satisfactory result considering the year + I spent asking Vanquise to stop charging me incorrect charges and charges that din't exist on any of their literature and charges on these charges because I refused to pay them

A number of people, including myself, have taken out Vanquis cards and set up Direct Debits to pay. Vanquis then fail to take those Direct Debits and charge you late payment fees, over limit fees and any other fee they can think of. This happened on my first scheduled payment. “Works for me”

After becoming bankrupt I had to wait a year to get a bank account with DD function. Vanquis took me on for a credit card and I get a txt from them each month telling me to pay. I call the (free from a landline) number and pay the balance of, which is often less than I owe due to the credit period. In 2 years with Vanquis I have paid no interest whatsoever, and no call costs. My credit limit has increased, as I would hope, but I spend within my means so all is good. Paid off the bulk of the card after HEAVY interest, now paying interest on top of the interest. They claim they'll help you, but they don't. Staff aren't allowed a Vanquis card, I wonder why... I've had nothing but problems with this company. If it's not their utterly pathetic website, it's their utterly pathetic phone service. It would help if their staff, would stop just for a minute or two, trying to sell what is essentially PPI (under a different name) to listen to a word you have to say. “Excellent - just pay it off in full every month”

My credit rating was really poor so I applied for a Vanquis card as the first step in rebuilding my credit rating. I got the card in March 2010 with a £250 credit limit. I set up a direct debit to pay off the account balance in full every month. Since then they've given me a Gold Card and increased the credit limit to £3,000 and reduced the interest rate by 5%. well done im pleased for you, i hope i can do the same,had the card over a year started at 150 raised to 550 at christmas,have not had a raise since though, i dont clear my balance often but pay at least 130 a month off when min payment is 30,hoping to get a gold card one day,never missed a payment or been late with one,when i rang them the other week they said they dont give gold cards to granite card holders which is what i am,so not sure whats gonna happen,

“Fraud was sorted.. slowly”

Main bad points: You get sporadic phone calls advertising payment insurance. It is not a secure card, on line purchasing does not use any sort of 3D verification like other cards. Transaction attempts were made on my card and blocked by vanquis as they were obviously unusual, however I was not informed at the time, only when they had reattempted (successfully) to use my card a month later. I've had a Vanquis credit card for a few years now. I got it initaially to help repair my credit rating after I messed up when I was younger. No you don't have to stay with them to build up your score! Contact the credit reference agencies and ask for a notice of correction to be applied for example " I was late making a payment on ( input the date) due to been in hospital giving birth) that should help. Kick them to the curb

“Harassed for late payment”

When you see the words "late payment" you could think I brought it upon myself BUT I explained the situation to Vanquis beforehand: On the day the payment should have been made, I telephoned and explained I would make a payment when my student finance arrives within the next two weeks. Hes commenting because hes probably annoyed (as am I) by the slating of vanquis. If people ran their account properly ie stay within the limit and pay on time then they would have no problem at all. Iv had my card for six months and have had my limit increased to £1000 but never go above £500 because Iv learnt from my mistakes and will not borrow more than I can afford to pay back..its just common sense really unfortunately its the one thing alot of these reviewers lack.

If you both read my own review of my vanquis experience you would know that I did/do run my vanquis account perfectly . . . . they acted wrongly by charging various fees incorrectly to my account: 1 type not even listed on any vanquis literature, and a furhter 2 incorrect charged which triggered 2 more different still types of charges . . . . . . the compensation that I received from the banking ombudsman proved me correct . . . . many many letters of compliant and phone calls to vanquis carried on for 18 months + but it was absolutely no use trying to get them to correct the situation . . . . . nothing was done until I took my case to the ombudsman . .... try not using the word mong to maker your case . . .they conduct their business in the wrong manner because across the country this makes money for vanquis !

same here . . . many incorrect charges that triggered more chares. . . . see my comment below . . . . I had to go to ombudsman in order to get them to stop . . . . dozens of phone calls and letters over 18+ months and absolutely no action by vanquis to correct their mistakes
