Overview VW Touareg
This mid to big size luxury SUV
is the first vehicle of its type produced by VW and it has become very
successful in what is now a very crowded market.
Starting with its worldwide introduction in 2003, the Touareg quickly became an award winning vehicle with a
variety of accolades ranging from 4X4 of the Year to Best SUV. The Touareg gained more than three dozen international awards,
in fact; and also, more importantly for VW, recorded more than 300,000
worldwide sales in less than four years, taking VW into an entire new market
sector. The VW Touareg
is an off-road vehicle with the comfort of a luxury saloon and the dynamic
driving characteristics of a high performance sports car.
Early Touaregs
The Touareg produced by Volkswagen
since 2003 cane with standard four-wheel
drive, auto locking, and low range setting activated via in-cabin controls.
The first engines, from what is now a considerable range, included a 5 litre
313bhp V10 TDI turbo diesel and a 3.2 litre 220bhetrol V6. Later in 2003 the range will be expanded to include a 2.5 litre
five-cylinder turbo diesel and a 4.2 litre petrol V8.
To help the Touareg with its sporting credentials,
there was also a six speed automatic gearbox with tiptronic
shifting, Formula One-style paddles behind the steering wheel. The main
attraction of the engine range though was the fabulous V10 TDI. It?s powerful
and has enough torque to give the Touareg superb
performance. 0 to 60mph in just 7.8sec, more than two seconds quicker than its
petrol version. Options to make the vehicles more capable off-road included an
available air suspension system which can raise the cars ride height on
command and interior switch allowing rear differential to be manually locked.
2007 VW Touareg
Latest, VW Touareg, the Altitude,
boasts a head-turning sports body kit with twin chrome exhaust, tinted windows
and new spoiler. This great all-round SUV can tow 3.5 tonnes, ford water up to
half a metre deep and climb slopes of 45 degrees due to a host of special all-terrain
solutions. Intelligent safety features include the advanced new ABSplus system which can cut
braking distances by 20 per cent on rough ground. While the improved Electronic
Stability Programme (ESP) now offers Active Rollover Protection (ARP), rain
brake support and under-steer control logic for sharper turning performance. As
well as a range of luxury improvements on the interior, including 10 speaker
sound system, a major improvement for the new Touareg 2 comes from the use of the FSI fuel management
system that produces more horsepower and torque for better performance while
delivering more efficiency. The 3.6L VR6 FSI is rated at 280 hp; the 4.2L V8
FSI at 350 HP; and the 5.0L V10 TDI twin turbo, 310 HP with a massive 553 ft/pounds
