Better drive than predecessors and more room. Good spec. Good looking. Good safety record. Reasonable mpg.
Not much. Decent value Supermini worth a look now as second hand purchase.
The main thing about the Smart Forfour is that unlike the other Smarts it was a more conventional five-door hatchback with a roomy interior, available as a four or five-seater. There was a fair old range. The extra length along with the increasing inside space made it easier and more comfortable to drive and it held the road better.
The Smart Forfour is a supermini produced only from 04 to 06. Although more conventional than its Smart predecessors it was also more of a conventional looking stylish development for Smart and therefore Smart hoped it would be more accessible. Smart aimed to combine the functional appeal of a small car with the Smart brand to increase its sales. Even though this was a nice enough car not many were sold though so it makes it a fairly exclusive car these days second hand. The Smart Forfour offered a choice of petrol/diesel engines, 4 or 5 seats and a range of colours and trims. The Smart Forfour was made in Holland in conjunction with Mitsubishi and shared major components with the 2003 Mitsubishi Colt including chassis, suspension and engines. The Smart Forfour received a four star NCAP crash test rating confirming Smarts decent reputation for safety, a surprise for many considering this is a small car brand. Smart Forfour insurance groups vary wildly from base to turbo models - group 3 and rise to group 16.
In 2005 smart launched the Forfour Brabus to try and spice up the range. This was the most powerful production smart yet which combines decent power with a nice finish. The smart Forfour Brabus featured sporting features, including a lowered suspension along with a 1.5 litre four-cylinder turbocharged Mitsubishi 4G15 engine enhanced by BRABUS GmbH. The engine was exclusively for the Forfour managing 177bhp (130kW), meaning about 0-62.5 mph in 6.9 secs and a top speed of 137 mph.
