Not cheapest in its field.
The Passat is a family car produced in various forms by Volkswagen since 1973 renowned for its reliability and sturdy build quality. Although for many years a bog standard looking saloon/estate from 2000 onward the Passat developed considerably, losing its chunky shape, becoming better more aerodynamic looking, more powerful and better performing with a more luxurious interior. The choice of trim levels currently includes E, S, Sport, SE and SEL. Even the base S models have air con, alloys, 6 airbags and stability control. The 2.0 Litre TDI 170 PS are a good example of the range, no slouchers, they are capable of 0-62 in 8.6secs and with reasonable combined fuel efficiency of 42.2mpg. Another reason to consider the modern Passat is that it comes with a 5 star NCAP rating, making it one of the safest cars around. Having said that, even second hand models are renowned for their excellent safety credentials. The luxury Passat cabin houses four adults comfortably, while the huge 485-litre boot is capable of dealing with the familys luggage no problem. High end features include press and drive ignition, electric parking brake, 16ins alloys and Climatic semi-automatic air conditioning.
The VW Passat has won numerous awards for its value for money and performance. Recently, for instance, and for the second year in a row, the Passat saloon won What Car? Magazines Best Family Car for 2007. The judges praised its engines, handling, safety record, luxury and value for money. Of interest to caravanners, The Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0-litre TDI 4MOTION has also beaten 50 competitors to win the 2007 Towcar Awards. The judges from What Car? Practical Caravan and The Camping and Caravanning Club issued the award after a number of towing road test. Judges also applauded the Passat for its great value for money, practicality and economy. The high level of standard equipment on all 4MOTION models includes Climatic air conditioning, eight speaker CD stereo and 16-inch alloys.
