Over its five year reign the Honda Civic Type-R has gathered momentum as a leading player for the fast car brigade. Put simply, its one of the best Hot Hatches ever made and especially the more recent version. Tens of thousands of these superb hatchbacks have been sold in the UK and they transformed the reputation of the Civic from a reliable runabout into a sleek and sexy urban warrior.
The Type R is still a practical vehicle though with plenty of leg room and ample storage in its boot. It just handles like a Grand Prix champion. The Type Rs impressive power is a result of Hondas VTEC advanced engine technology. To be precise its 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine.
The Honda Type R was also notable as the first Civic produced in England by Honda for export to Japan.
Launched in 2001 the Type R revamped the standard Civic line with the addition of a whopping 2 litre 197bhp engine. It has received several makeovers since, each one developing the performance sport credentials that bit further, including a succession of more stylish contours. As well as its legendary handling and power the Type R has a large boot and reasonable space and access for backseat passengers.
Honda Civic Type R was revamped in crucial areas with improvements to the suspension, steering, including a huge turning circle, and the engine. Plus a 15mm drop in ride height to complete a more aggressive image. It also got three-light projector headlamps and redesigned bumpers.
The latest model benefited from improvements to the driving and handling experience. A rear privacy glass was fitted to the rear side windows and tailgate. Red carpet Recaro seats and Momo steering wheel are standard. Improved 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than before. The top speed remains unchanged at 146mph. New front and rear light clusters and revised bumpers along with stylish door-mounted indicator repeaters complete the new look.

The Type R has consistently won awards including What Car? Hot Hatch Of The Year, 2002 to 2004, and BBC Top Gear Best Hot Hatch 2002.
