Though the basic plot of the play is good overall, I would not recommend this play for reading aloud to children. At the least, a person should be thirteen before reading the play. It would be worth discussing the fact that Shylock is somewhat of a victim after reading the play. It would also be good to point out that none of the main characters are perfect by the standards of Shakespeare's time. Roma Gill has done an excellent job. The marginal notes are both informative and thought provoking. The layout is simple and functional with lots of space for students to jot down extra points. Scene Analyses and End of Act Analyses are missing. Mere notes are not enough at higher level. Essay type questions should be more exhaustive and maybe printed at the end of each scene / act. More annotation examples could be added. ...
