The initial simpleservers.co.uk setup was easy and I had a new domain name registered and an empty Magento site up and running very quickly – I was impressed.
The speed of the site appeared acceptable but I was not able to do any real testing, as I did not get the opportunity to add any data/products.
The biggest problem was actually getting files (my Magento theme and extensions) onto the site. I had chosen the £1 trial offer to test SimpleServers “Magento Shared Server” configuration.
As part of the setup I was offered a WebDisk (WebDav) script (and also manual instructions for connecting) and also the settings for transferring files via FTP as well.
Unfortunately despite trying both the WebDisk (WebDav) script and manual connection instruction, several times across many hours, I kept receiving a “connection rejected too many users” message. I eventually decided to go with the FTP option and despite being able to connect to the server I could not transfer a single file (although I could create folders) as the server kept timing out.
I raised a service ticket and within an hour and a half I had a reply, informing me that WebDisk (WebDav) was not available on the shared server offering and FTP would not work as my IP had been blocked “as I had been port scanning the server” however if I responded by providing my IP address they would add it to a white list.
My frustration had now got the better of me!
Why offer a WebDisk (WebDav) script and setting if they are not going to work! I had wasted several hours on this!
If my IP had been blocked how did I connect to the server and create folders and why did my FTP client (CyberDuck) give me repeated “connection timed out”/ “server not responding messages” rather than connection failure messages.
Lastly I did not appreciate the accusation that I had been port scanning their server; I HAD DONE NO SUCH THING AT ANY TIME NOR HAVE I EVER ENGAGED IN SUCH ACTIVITIES and because my IP address is not static there would be no point in using a white list.
I sent a reply to the service ticket email to provide clarification (as above) but I eventually received an automated response stating that email replies were not supported.
It was at this point I decided to do a little further investigation into the simplyservers hosting provider, a quick companies house check and looking up the organizations Head Office (86 Station Road, Wythall, Worcestershire, B47 6AB) on Google street view and finally a check on where the site that simplyservers had set up was actually being hosted (Six Degrees Managed Data Limited) with comparison of the hosting IPS web-site (data center descriptions/facilities) with that on simplyservers.
In conclusion the description on the simplyservers website did not match what I had discovered and for this reason I felt that I had been somewhat mislead, it was because of this I felt uneasy about the organization and decided not to continue, determining that despite a very promising start, the offering I had chosen from simpleservers was perhaps not going to meet my expectations, I reluctantly decided to cancel.
