I contacted Free Virtual Servers because I had misunderstood how the billing worked: I thought I'd cancelled an account entirely but actually the hosting was still active and I was charged for renewing it.
I think that they could be a little more intelligent about this: if I have cancelled the domain, it would be worth checking whether I want to cancel the associated hosting. And I find the Worldpay interface difficult and confusing.
However the person I contacted at Free Virtual Servers responded quickly and was very helpful. They explained what had happened and that although the money couldn't be refunded, as a goodwill gesture they would allow me to put it towards a different account.
I've been using Free Virtual Servers for years now, and although they may not be absolutely the cheapest service provider, they are affordable and they have always provided excellent customer service which means I'll stick with them and I always recommend them.
