The shared hosting is woeful. Sites are slow and service frequently interrupted. Error 500s are very common — I ran very basic, common php/mySql CMSs like Wordpress and phpBB and was plagued with them. Fasthosts best response was, to paraphrase, 'this is what shared hosting is like, deal with it.' That was the last straw.
Fasthosts disingenuously claim to have a "24/7 UK based call centre", which in itself may be true. What is misleading by omission is the fact that most of their Customer Service staff are in fact overseas. I have not spoken to a UK Fasthosts representative in years. Not only is the statement misleading, but the script-reading staff are totally unkowledgable and unhelpful, taking several days to reply by email, ultimately with useless boilerplate responses and closing support tickets with no resolution – something I have experienced more than once, as have others by accounts on the net.
Cancelling my account was like jumping through hoops. They don't make it easy, and there are horror stories of people believing they have cancelled only to be chased by debt collectors sent by Fasthosts further down the line (search "fasthosts debt collection" on google, it abounds with stories), so I was mindful of this. I had to directly insist several, maybe 3, times via email that my account should be closed and should not further be billed before the customer services rep I was corresponding with would definitively acknowledge the request. They were worryingly evasive about it.
