I was happy with 1and1's cheap and cheerful domain hosting for a year or so until a couple of weeks ago they charged me for 'MyWebsite', which I thought was a 'free trial' and therefore - free! Apparently, I should have cancelled within the 30 days. I thought this was extremely sharp practice and most probably illegal, but I was wrong. Apparently under UK consumer law, as long as you receive written details of what you have been offered and were warned in good time of your right to cancel and a reasonable way to do it, then they are basically in the clear. I should have read the e-mails on time.
Well, I won't get my money back this time, but I'll make sure it never happens again by putting the phone down as soon as anyone says 'free trial'. This has definitely soured my relations with 1and1. I may look for an alternative provider.
