“Why did Hotpoint concieve the twin drum and not patent it?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MasterOfNothing on 10/06/2013

The Dyson Washing machine in theory, with it's twin drum that can counter-rotate, is teh best wash that you can get. The problem is that in order to achieve this in a (nearly) standard sized washing machine bow, the complexity inside is awesome.... and unreliable... James Dyson actually took on 1 or 2 ex-Hotpoint development engineers who has been working on Hotpoints 'Vougue2' platform. As part of that programme, the split double drum design was concieved and tested, but it was clear that the mid-range market that Hotpoint used to dominate could neither afford such a machine (i.e. in the £200 to £450 range) and it had one problem.... If the Drums were not perfectly manufactured and assembled - IT TORE UP CLOTHES. Warranty costs would have been astronomical. So Hotpoint purposely DID NOT PATENT the design and continued to develop a very good product that was made in North Wales up until 2 years ago. Sadly the factory was closed by the new owner (Merloni/Ariston-Indesit), but not because the product was bad, just because foreign owners just see the UK as a market for products, not a manufacturing base. I feel sorry for James, up to a point. The 'factory' just outside of Tetbury in the Cotswolds is no longer a production facility - it is now purely a nice building with a carpark in fornt of the offices.... and a special place for James' car with JD written in it. Anyway, now he is into cooling air and drying hands........

“Best ever machine”

★★★★★

written by on 08/05/2013

Bought my Dyson memory CRO1 in 2000, Loved it! Dyson had a brilliant aftersales approach, yes it broke down a few times, but an engineer came out within days, free of charge in the 5 year warranty time, I took out yearly warranties with mastercare every year since and had the same service from Dyson, the engineer gave me updates about their ability to repair it as they stopped production, and has managed to keep it going until now,but I can't grumble at nearly 13 years service from it. I will admit it was a little noisier than I'd have liked, but we got used to it, I'm glad we bought it, it did a great wash, had a good choice of cycles and in 2000 it looked the bees knees in my kitchen! I'm also a great fan of my Dyson Hoover, that too has great after sales service from Dyson. I'm devasted that I'm going to lose my machine now,

I too bought a dyson cro1 and knowing I was due to retire, I believed the salesman who told me that the machine parts and repairs would always be available and would be charged as a set call out fee. having paid for the extra warranty plus one after warranty call out and the initial £800 cost It now turns out that my washing has cost me almost as much as sending it to the laundry Dyson should be ashamed. I loved the fact that I could wash my double duvet every year and have only good things to say about the quality of the wash as I do about my dc04 vacumn....

I too paid £100 in November to have my dyson machine repaired and covered for 12months and then sent a letter saying they will not be making parts and was sent £60. My machine broke again in January I'm a single mam with 3 kids and can't afford another machine after I invested in a good one to last, Dyson have no customer service and should be ashamed of themselves

Bought new in 2002 £1200 or so.

Countless call-outs and at first for free from a fab technical team. Excellent wash although very annoying fault codes can occur. Search the web for ways to clear. £95 great for the service. We are looking for second hand machines to store for spare parts! Well done Mr Dyson and Co! Next time make it have less waste hose problems! (Needs to be at exactly the right hight and everything works great)

“When I bought my £1200 Dyson Washing machine 8 years...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 30/07/2009

When I bought my £1200 Dyson Washing machine 8 years ago the company was shouting from the rooftops that it would LAST FOR 20 YEARS. The faults started almost strait away and it was twice exchanged for drum bearing faults.
Since then it has had a further 3 drums and various other parts costing me nearly £300 in repairs from Dyson.
It is once again broken and since I am just outside the 12 month repair warranty Dyson do not want to know. I am told that they no longer have any new parts for this machine and that they cannot repair the bearings any longer.
I could have bought a brand new mid range washing machine EVERY YEAR for the amount that I have spent at Dyson. This company has GONE TO THE DOGS, they have sacked all of their best engineers and do not care about their customers which in reality was their only strong point. Even the vacuum cleaners are now OLD HAT and you can buy better vacs for a fraction of the price. Shame on you DYSON.

I found this review very helpful because... I have just had the same experience, bought new dyson washing machine in 2002. It broke down in 2006 they could not mend it so gave me a replacement. now in 2010 it has broken again and they cannot mend it at all, no spare parts so I am left having to buy another washing machine. The original dyson cost me £900 in 2002!!!!

“I bougt my Dyson CRO1 in 2002, which cost me over ...”

written by Kayla67 on 07/07/2009

I bougt my Dyson CRO1 in 2002, which cost me over £1000, i have had nothing but problems with it, the problems started 2 weeks after the 2 years guarantee had run out. The engineer has been out on countless occasions. In October i paid £95 for a service, all was ok until April when the problems started. The lastest was yesterday, when i was told the bearings have gone and they no longer repair it as they are unable to get parts because they are no longer making them. I was offered a vacuum cleaner as compensation and my £95 back or £160 with no reimbursement of the £95 but that still leaves me without a washing machine

“The Dyson CRO1 washing machine has a great load...”

★★★★★

written by AlexV on 20/01/2009

The Dyson CRO1 washing machine has a great load capacity - I used to have to do a load a day (2 person household) with my old washer, with the CR01 this is down to 3 loads a week! Now we have a young baby we're up to 4-5 loads a week, I'd expect to be doing 8-10 in my old washer. Clothes come out looking and feeling cleaner and dryer and take less time in the tumble dryer despite my last washer being a 1600 spin and the Dyson only being a 1400.

Dyson service - it's a fixed price repair for the majority of faults and if the fault is a known issue it's usually reduced or free. Customer service are also polite, quick to answer the call and happy to help.I purchased my Dyson CR01 seccond hand when it's last owner had a new kitchen fitted and it came with free appliances. When I picked it up I realised that it had never seen a hot wash and was in need of nuking with Calgon and a few washer cleaning treatments. With that out of the way it's given me almost three years of trouble free service. The only issues were those caused by us not checking pockets carefully and not cleaning the trap often enough. If they still made them i'd have another one without hesitation.

written by hellsgrannie on 10/05/2008

I bought my Dyson when they first came onto the market paid £1100 think that was in 2002. I've never had a days worry or an engineer to visit. I loved the innovative mechanical genius that went into the making of it and as I had back problems it was set up on a plinth. This also helped access to the hoses but they havent been a problem.
Its only in the last few months that the drum made a terrible grating sound and then spat out an almost whole credit card. unfortunately the rest must be still inside, I can still use 2 programmes but it will be the first time I have called for help..., and have to say its not the machine it was the operator, who forgot to check pockets!
I hope it can be fixed as I just love it!
It was the washer equivalent of space travel and still nothing on the market compares!!

“I bought my Dyson CR01 six years ago.”

★★★★★

written by bigjd66 on 18/12/2007

I bought my Dyson CR01 six years ago.

When it was 12 months old it developed a fault with the bearings, dyson replaced the machine without question.

In 2005 i received a phone call from Dyson customer service stating that they were offering upgrades to the older CR01 models that would give them the improved capability of the newer designs (hardware and software upgrades). I was initially skeptical, but when I asked what the charge would be they stated it was a free service; true enough the upgrades were completed free within a few days.

Since the machine was replaced 5 years ago I have had trouble free use until recently (unfortunately the machine is well out of the extended warranty period), however the machine was still repaired by Dyson, parts and labour, with no charge.

Although these machines cost a lot when new the OUTSTANDING Dyson customer service should mean that they literally last forever....don't be put off even buying a second hand one if you can!

“This machine has iconic classic looks from the outset...”

★★★★★

written by eyeno on 28/11/2007

This machine has iconic classic looks from the outset but it's not just a pretty face; its functionality is phenomenal. It's a machine that works as beautifully as it looks. I bought my Dyson CR01 nearly 7 years ago. It developed a problem after 5 years of use. The problem it had was it started leaking water from underneath the machine. I called Dyson and the engineers replaced an outlet tube that was punctured. No charge was made. The machine then developed a fault with the drums. Again I called the Dyson engineers, again they fixed the problem, replacing the drums, and again there was no charge. I can honestly say this machine has been and continues to be well worth the money. My Dyson CR01 gives the best wash results of any machine I have used and I have used a wide range of makes. The capacity is very large which is useful. The 1400 spin makes drying washed clothes so much faster and economical. Another great feature is that you can press the start button to pause the wash mid cycle and add clothes to the wash. The original coin trap cover on the machine was difficult to remove. When the engineers came to fix the drum problem they replaced the coin trap cover with a much more user friendly one which had protrusions so that it could be gripped to turn the coin trap cover more easily. They did this unprompted, which I consider excellent proactive service. I have not had any more problems with the machine and I feel at ease in the knowledge that should anything else go wrong with the machine there are experienced, knowledgeable, professional engineers who will fix the machine and not view it as a problem. I consider a Dyson washing machine to be value for money and a prudent investment. I would recommend a Dyson washing machine.

“What a waste of money this machine has been. Within 12...”

★★☆☆☆

written by booster on 18/04/2007

What a waste of money this machine has been. Within 12 months of purchasing it I noticed small holes in lots of our clothes, I realised it was the machine causing the damage when I put a brand new top in to wash and it came out with 3 holes. Dyson tried to say it was bra wires causing the damage, until I pointed out I handwash my bras. They then suggested it was moths, until I pointed out moths don't eat synthetic fibres! They eventually changed the drum - guess what! 12months on and the holes are back! I also now have the added problem that 3 of the programmes start the cycle but never get past the wash cycle - it just washes and washes and washes .......... I have to cancel the programme and then put it onto rinse and spin cycle to finish it off. I know someone else who also has one of these machines and she has had the same problems. There are so many other large capacity machines on the market that are much cheaper and undoubtedly more reliable, I would NEVER recommend a DYSON

I guess dyson should have kept on their path of amazing vacuum cleaners rather than delving into areas of household chores that are already dealt with well by other companies. We needed new vacuum cleaner technology, but likely not washing machine technology.

Alijriley's Response to 285998_booster's Review

Written on: 28/02/2008

I purchased my Dyson 7 years ago. After complaining about small holes in my clothes I too was told it was bra wire or moths. I would not take this answer as I have not lost a bra wire nor do I have moths so they changed the drum... still small holes appeared in everything from socks to coats. Eventually Dyson replaced my machine after 3 years with a brand new one, and guess what? Its a hole maker too! I will never recommend a Dyson washing machine to anyone as there is so many other manufacturers that now offer that large appealing drum. I think the problem lies with the two drums going in different directions, zips, buttons, etc get snagged on material and puncture the fibre.
