Launched in 2003 the Volkswagen Touran is a compact MPV. It fills a gap between the larger Sharan MPV and the Passat Estate. The vehicle was originally offered with five or seven seats but now only as a seven seater. The look is based partly on the Golf, in terms of the smooth stylings and in Japan its even called a Golf Touran. One of its main selling points is that the Touran people carrier scores a maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. All models have ABS with Brake Assist and Electronic Stabilisation Programme, twin front and side airbags, three-point seatbelts for all seats, active head restraints and Isofix child seat. The Touran is available with a choice of engines - two petrol engines and ten diesels - and in three trim levels S, SE and Sport. In 2007 it saw a major facelift for the Touran, with an improved look and better all round performance and comfort credentials. The new range looks like it will continue to be a good seller for VW. The 2.0-litre diesel TDI engines are probably the best, offering the greatest power and performance. The Sport 2.0 L TDI is capable of 132mph and 0-62 in 9.1s.
