The Passat is a family car produced in various forms by Volkswagen since 1973 renowned for its reliability and sturdy build quality. Although for many years a bog standard looking saloon/estate from 2000 onward the Passat developed considerably, losing its chunky shape, becoming better more aerodynamic looking, more powerful and better performing with a more luxurious interior. The choice of trim levels currently includes E, S, Sport, SE and SEL. Even the base S models have air con, alloys, 6 airbags and stability control.

The 2.0 Litre TDI 170 PS are a good example of the range, no slouchers, they are capable of 0-62 in 8.6secs and with reasonable combined fuel efficiency of 42.2mpg. Another reason to consider the modern Passat is that it comes with a 5 star NCAP rating, making it one of the safest cars around.

    First the good things: great on space, reliable(not the DSG!), good mpg(average 42), comfortable, easy to live with, powerful engine.
    But that gearbox is the worst auto box I know. It is jerky and simply a pain to use in town, stop and go, traffic. What was VW thinking of? It has been send back to G ...

    Absolutely the worst car that I have ever owned. Bought used from the dealer with 60k on the clock. In 4 months, the turbo has failed, the clutch has failed, the parking brake has failed and the dashboard squeaks like a take-away kebab box.

    Bought 5 Passats with DSG box over 6 months for company. Every one has had a major gearbox failure with the Mechatronic units failing in each case. Thats a coll £1000+ for the bits alone without the labour cost or the hassle of tasking the cars back continually. Garage tried to tell us they ...
