The Golf Mk IV was the heaviest and largest, and allegedly slowest version of the Golf brand to date, but still it became the biggest selling car in Europe for a while. It was a deliberate attempt to take the Golf more upmarket with better quality interior and equipment spec. The Mk IV Golf was introduced in 1997 with choice of hatchbacks (with three or five-doors) or estates, petrol or diesel engines, manual or automatic transmission and front or four-wheel drive.

Golfs have an overall reputation for reliability, solid build and quality finish although you will find some of our reviewers occasionally disagree.

I have owned the gti tdi for 1 year now and coming from a line of BMW's and other hot hatches this is my first DIESEL and i have to say once you get used to the typical idle noise the car is really good, the speed is awesome once the turbo kicks in around 2500-3000 rpm all hell breaks loose, the mpg is amazing returning 40-48 urban and 50+ m/way miles. The reliability is so far perfect with mine being an 02 with 88000 on the clock. My only drawback is that most peolpe think i have stuck a GTI ...

My VW Golf 1.8T (GTi Turbo - 150bhp) and me have had some serious fun over the past four years. It is a great car, with loads of power, handles well, and once I replaced the Pirelli 6000 tyres with Michelin premacy's it actually stuck like glue cornering. All golfs have a water pump issue (you must be driving it well) and also the MK4's have a gearbox issue/fault, even that aside it is stilla 10/10 car,. It can be a family car or a wee race machine, depending on how quick you ...
