“AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by manaboutvan on 06/06/2014

I owned a 05 Merc van for light building work and like most guys got sucked in by good looks but never again!! Endless problems. Yes it really does chew up the outer edge of front tyres very very fast, both electric windows failed and expensive to fix, alternator had to be replaced twice within 3yrs, engine bonnet release never worked, rear suspension springs had to be replaced along with a clunking noise from the front suspension and lots of road noise.Gearbox like and old tractor clunked into 2nd gear, nice having the 6 speed box though. Paint quality very poor and rust started to show. Had major problems with keys not starting the vehicle took 3 weeks to get sorted with ignition sensors being pulled apart, keys re coded etc, more $$$ Plastic outside door protectors fell off I glued them back on, plastic headlight lenses crazed badly from sun, steering wheel outer broke down due to heat/sun.Cup holders broke very early on, radiator hose fell off while driving emptied out water, lucky I had tools onboard and refixed hose back tight. Way too much plastic even plastic front guards. Now good things, impressive fuel economy, plenty of torque,6 speed gear box, looks good and that's about all. Now have a Hyundai i load CDI very pleased much much better build quality and no problems.

“rust buckets , surposed to have a 10 year paint warranty ”

written by 46McFadden on 04/05/2014

great engine ,but the body work is so rusty , you would think I lived by the sea, went to my local Mercedes dealer , because there is a ten year paint warranty , I had no joy , to keep the weight down they spray the van lightly. my van looks terrible when I turn up for a job , I will leave the van looking rusty , to show other people in the building trade to stay clear , such a good advertisement for Mercedes driving around in a rust bucket , very disappointed with the van and Mercedes dealership

“Merc vito traveliner 650,000 miles 2005 ”

★★★★☆

written by on 02/03/2014

The title says it all,yes it does have its problems main one is rust but we have had it sprayed to cure it for a few years. On the mechanical side it has had no major problem alternator a battery propshaft repair.Electricaly central locking is rubbish and we haven't bothered trying to fix rear doors and lock them manually. The minibus is run every day and we have no complaints with its performance or reliability.very few vehicles will ever reach this mileage on the same engine and running gear. On another view I also have a 109 traveliner with 200000 on it 06 plate and this is a complete bag of spanners with many faults.

“Reliable quick around town comfortablish on long journeys ”

2005 111cdi lwb 80,000 miles love this van she has been good to me parts have been cheap. She fits into every car park we have been too. But seats are wafer thin, cabin is as appealing as Borat in his lime green swim suit, road noise is like sitting next to a Texan from London to Scotland on a slow train. As for the rust well you would think I live in Cornwall on the beach. Will be addressing the seating problem by installing some leather seats from a Vaneo and purchasing a sound proofing kit as well as some 2nd hand doors. She is under powered on the motorway bigger turbos or larger MB engine is needed and rear wheel drive in the little snow we have well Zero traction.

“58 swb111 panel van 70k from new...best van ive had”

★★★★★

written by wooshy on 12/03/2013

Ok then ive read the other reviews ad im very surprised, I bought the van new fully specd excluding alloys as I work in london and know what wheels go through. Ive used it for work, camping, travelling and it laps it all up. A review here said that rear wheel drive vans were absolutly rubbish... yes the van does slip a bit if you go fast round wet roundabouts, but what I find is that the back stepping out is predictable and easy to correct...if your any sort of a good driver. Ive been caught in foot deep snow in norfolk and the only vehicals making it through... you guessed it the vitos... If your a poor driver that panics then you need to learn how to handle a rear wheel drive. 111 is plenty powerfull I didnt see the point going for the v6 too heavy for doing 5mph in london, constantly get 400-420 on a fill up. Im writing this review as im getting my new one in april, exactly the same but its now the 113 I believe. From new parts wise upto this year it has only needed tyres brakes.. however this year it needed a erv valve, the aircon this summer decided to develope a leak, and the rear springs have snapped a 1" bit off the end. My biggest mistake was having qwikfit disks and pads fitted I fell for the free pads waffle, the rwal pisser is they cost more than the merc proper parts and have squeeked and faded since new.. thank god theyve now been changed. Dont go for remote locking as you need to srand infront of the drivers door to activate it...which in my book isnt really remote....!!!! The reviewer said it dents easy... yep it will so have the inside lined for 80 quid and dont drive into things I think it has been a great van

“Vito 111cdi 2005 Wished I had not bothered”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Fishermanandy01 on 25/10/2012

Having owned a 110 cdi which was great, I must say im very disappointed. Poor suspension issues and always a knocking noise from somewhere, gear selection terrible and now losing power occasionally with rubbish fuel economy. From rust issues on the earlier models this still has not been addressed and as mentioned tracking is always an issue.

“An Independent view”

★★★★☆

written by on 30/08/2012

We are an independent light commercial vehicle dealer established almost 10 years ago.The vito does have it`s faults.Pre 2007 bad for bodywork rust,Heavy on anti roll bar bushes ( £4.40 each ),window regulators, rear coil springs fracturing. In spite of these faults i would always recommend the Vito over any of it`s competition including the VW.Why?? because in the last 10 years we have sold over 500 Vito`s without what i would consider one major problem i.e engine, gearbox. We also find the parts are quite possibly the cheapest of any manufacturer maybe with the exception of Ford, the parts availability is brilliant, the dealers are mainly open 24hrs a day unlike any other van manufacturer. So if i do get a problem with a Vito i can solve it quickly and relatively cheaply. We think the VW has superior build quality and drives better but are bad for clutches, turbo`s,gearboxes, intercoolers and the parts prices are way more than MB.

Having owned 5 previous vans of various makes and models this is by far the best purchase l have made. 2007 Extra Long WB, 111 CDI Owned for 4 years and no problems. Front tyres wear on the outer a little fast, however, l still go 19000 miles out of the last set (only a budget pair of tyres). Fantastic Van

“Looks good, drives OK but very flawed ”

★★☆☆☆

written by ruddlittle on 08/12/2011

I Bought a pair of 111 vans in 2009 having been very happy with a 2001 Vito 110. The new van looks the part and drives more like a car but I should have suspected something when I paid the same amount for an equivalent van after 8 years....how do they do that?....by skimping on everything, that's how. There's no temperature gauge and no warning when the washers are getting empty. The dash display panel would make a mobile phone feel cheap. The comfort seat has less padding. The metal body is made of thinner sheet and dents really easily. The radio aerial is printed on the windscreen and a) is rubbish and b) breaks almost straight away. Mercedes dealer don't have access to proper aerials to attach to the body or din plates to upgrade the radios - unlike our local hifi place that keeps them in stock - "a lot of Vito owners buy them..." I had a slight accident when someone reversed into me and we at first thought it was just the bonnet...how wrong we were. The radiator, grille, headlamps, air filter etc. etc. are plastic mouldings held in place with lugs. One tiny knock and all the lugs break off meaning you have to change all the parts!! The other car bill £250. Vito £3000. All for the sake of saving a few quid at the design stage. Vito 2 leaked from new. After 14 months and many complaints Mercedes finally tracked down the problem to a faulty body weld in the roof. I asked for some 'goodwill gesture' and was told that Mercedes (despite having not welded the car properly) had no liability - my contract was with the dealer. Unlike the humble Citroen Berlingo there is no catch to hold back the sliding doors - as I found to my cost when nearly decapitated after parking on a hill and leaning in to pick my daughter out of the back when the door self released from the lug that is meant to hold the door open but not at more than approx 5 degrees. Again, a fiver's worth of catch would make this much safer. Come the snow, borrow a VW. Unlike the old VITO this new version is RWD and drives as well in the snow as my old Ford Capri. With little weight in the back it's lethal and that goes for wet roads and corners too. My top tip. Don't be fooled by the badge. This is an expensive cheap van, not a cheap expensive one. There are far better ways to spend your money.

I fell for the name also, The three Pointed Star, Mercedes should Share the emblem with the Proctologists Guild.

I can say without a doubt my 1999 108cdi Vito Van was one of the Best to Drive vans I have ever Driven (I have to qualify that comment, that is when it was running) This is the Great Deceit. You think, Drives Great, Sucker!!!

So Far I have Replaced the Glow Plugs, Glow Plug Relay, Full Set of Injectors, Fuel Lines and Now the Computer, it continues to go into limp home mode, (who devised that scheme to keep you coming back to the workshop) all this after the previous owner replaced the motor at 140,000k, It has rust in the roof and 90% of mechanics politely say, "I don't not want to work on it, take it somewhere else!" Way to go Mercedes, product Recognition in the Industry!

Grand total so far $5500.00 in six months not including the motor swap done by the previous owner, I removed the Water Bottle to get at some hoses and when I applied just a little pressure to the Water Bottle it crumbled in my hand, Bio-Degradable Plastic? looks like Mercedes are on to something? made to last 10 years then crumble to dust!

p.s The computer had a faulty capacitor, it leaked and burned the case and motherboard, Mercedes takes no responsibility, just put out the hand for $3000.00 for a new one, I had a second hand one cloned to match mine (against their advise) and had them refit it, this is still being done as we speak so I cant add that cost yet to the tally, so it's $5500.00 + Motor (second hand $4500.00) $250.00 for a replacement computer + $300.00 for reprogramming + whatever Mercedes Charge me, probably another $1000.00 knowing how they operate.

I should have known after I saw no end of Mercedes Vito Vans on e-Bay selling for under $1000.00, all around 10 years - 14 years old and only around 240,000ks Is that pathetic or what? Even 2007 Vans can be snapped up for around $4500.00, Tax Losses Galore! Someone needs to get a Class Action Going against Mercedes, tell them to stop pouring mega millions into F1 and start making quality product again. Is it any wonder Kia, Hyundai and Renault are expanding their market at Mercedes expense. Mercedes 100 Years Gone! Learned Nothing. Once comedians get a hold on them and the Champagne set go somewhere else for their Glitz Fix it will be Sionara Mercedes and Good Riddance!

I have had my vito for 2 years now and in that time have had my vito back to mercedes about 6 times. I had a problem with the engine management system they fixed that. I had a problem with the tracking I told them again and again and they said it was okay even after I went through 2 pairs of wheels costing £170 a pair in the end I tike it to a local garage. They said the tracking was well out so they fixed it. Brakes are always going. I've gone through 2 sets of Mercedes Vito 111CDI Brake Disc (rear) and like I said the van is 2 years old.

bought my vito from new loved it from the moment i got into it drove like a dream.
for three years not a problem but no sooner had it come out of its warranty it started to have issues the main one the engine management light came on,brought it to Mercedes ans came back just one of those things broke down again done system check no ans broke down again another check suggested dirty fuel, removed and emptied tank no ans thought it was the common rail took it of and ran it on a test rail it wouldn't run properly god help me if it breaks in future. next they discovered that the hardy spicer on the prop shaft had gone at 63,000 miles just ones of those things according to them. Bill at moment £2,300 and they still not sure what the problem is? Mercedes world leaders eh!!!!. P.S. for any one wanting to know the 3yr servicing does not include adjusting or checking brakes on vehicle as i found out to my cost so be warned and they eat through discs and pads very quickly.

Hi Guys, I Own a 110cdi 2002 Vito.
Like you guys same problem with the front tyres scrubbing off -only 8k miles covered on new set of Dunlop LT30's and both completly now illegal. Rust is becoming a problem which I will have to address soon as it's becoming a bit 'tatty' to be seen in. Other than those issues, the engine & performance is great, (although ive heard of gearbox issues) two sliding doors & economy all ok. However it just loves to burn front tyres

“i bought my mercedes vito van from normands heathrow...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 18/03/2010

i bought my mercedes vito van from normands heathrow in 2000, on an X plate really great van.
my only major problem "was" as ive got rid of it now, was "RUST" after just 4 years coming from first all of the doors.
along the bottom and along the door bumper strips including the rear tailgate.
then all the wheel arches,at the front just above the bumper a thin painted strip.
under the bonnet the main cross member rusted badly ive never seen this before.
i contacted mercedes about this, and not knowing the anticorrosion warranty asked how long the warranty was.
the customer service person did not know, then after going away and asking came back and said 3 years on their vans 6 years on their people vito carrier .
i said why so have you two kinds of quality finish, this was a laughable answer but costly to me.
it cost me £2,500 to have this refurbished on my van, mercedes did not want to know .
i used to drive transit vans and decided to go german ,only to find out my mercedes was made in spain as are transits.
ive never seen the kind of all over rust in any transit, as i had in my vito.
i would love to hear from mercedes but never have, i also found out that vito people carriers are made in germany maybe thats why they fair better .

Owned a 109 short wheel-base vito from new, First new vehical I've ever owned so looked after it well, washed it every week, serveced at mb dealership, only does light work and currently has only 52,000 miles on the clock. What a waste of time rust everywhere!!! Mb warrenty stands for nothing. Plus all the other suspension problems, and this van is only used as a florist delivery van, not exactly working it hard. I think it will be VW next time for me.

written by mattb88 on 09/02/2010

I have owned my vito 111 long for four and a half years. 3 months out of warranty and the 2nd gear synchro went (mb din't want to know). It has 3 holes rusted through in the roof where the mb roof rack is fitted which let in water. There is rust on the underside of the bonnet, stone chips turn to rust in days and then spread under the paint. Rust from the inside on the tailgate around the handle and the middle of the pannel. Rust on the bottom of doors, seams inside and out. 3 shocks have gone recently, 2 rear springs, the front tyres scrub and last about 10k (tracking and camber are fine. Steering wheel vibration (balance is fine). turbo inter-cooler cracked (£450) . Van is not fit for purpose and i am discussing options with MB which include legal action. Its only done 55k with light loads. Should be worth about 5.5k but offered £1800 px and it would never sell privately..
It now sits on the drive i refuse to waste any more money on it and have bought a VW transporter. Don't buy they are S*!T

I have had the van just over two and half years. It that time it has eaten through 2 set of tyres plus it has gone through 2 sets of front shocks, various tie rods and anti roll bar bushes. The tracking has been redone 3 times. The van has traveled only 42000 miles in its entire life and I have driven just over 25000 with light loads. These vans have a problem with the steering racks plus they and inclined to rust. The electrics are also going to give you problems. Buyer beware
