I have studied a certificate, diploma and MBA through the Open University and am now studying an undergraduate science degree.
I have found the course materials of the highest quality being a combination of books, audio, software and DVDs. Books are updated every few years with latest theory and access is given via the library to almost all journals. The MathCAD Software used in my latest course is v14; a modern 2010 version, not the very latest but stable.
Tutors are generally from business and are generally good. Some tutors I have met at MBA residentials are way beyond what you would expect. I have not personally experienced any bad tutors but agree with others that some are better than others.
Personal discipline is a must and although the OU suggests ways to improve this and clearly give you deadlines, you own your study and the way it fits in with the rest of your life.
Networking with other students happens at day schools and residentials but is not as good as if you were at university day-in-day-out but you will mix with people working in business and industry rather than full-time students.
