Bought one for my daughter to go travelling in her gap year!
We found we were only given partially correct advice at the post office when we purchased the card as a result
* The card was initially blocked because she already had a card registered at a previous address. It is in the fine print! So no money!
* No one would speak initially to a distraught parent. So time elapsed
* Once cleared the card was not then upgraded. To upgrade the card proof of identity in the form of a passport and your address verified or stamped by your bank is required which is quite difficult when abroad. More time elapses!
*Not upgraded the card can only hold £750 for the entire year! It is in the fine print Therefore when a parent adds a further £500 to the card it actually never gets funded to the card but remains in limbo in the post offices own account for at least a month while they try to return it in the form of a letter that can only be cashed in a Post Office by the card holder who is on the other side of the world! Still no money!
* Still unresolved and very worried and desperate parent has no more money to send, but can't seem to get anyone to understand or care!
DON'T buy one unless you have read the fine print
You're only going on a short trip
Or have never moved house
DO make sure you have another source of funds available in an emergency
UNLESS YOU ARE INTENDING ON A STARVATION DIET AND LIVING ROUGH
