“Goldcar robbery ruins a perfect Honeymoon ”

We booked to go to Madeira for our Honeymoon. We chose Travel Republic following high reviews and recommendations. Firstly I have to say flights and the hotel were fantastic - however our experience of car hire was not!! The problem was, was that the car booking had been paid for under the name of Holiday Autos. We arrived at the airport to find no such name and after asking at one of the car hire places were forced to spend over an hour trying to find our booking. the booking had in fact been made with Goldcar. We were then told that we needed to upgrade the car as the car we had hired could not cope with the hilly terrain. We then got told that we had to pay an extra £150 insurance or it was not advisable for us to have the car! Naturally, with no other means to get to the hotel and highly flustered we paid up. The experience was the same as going to the cash point with a gun to your head. Anyway we have written to Travel Republic who have apparently forwarded our concerns to the company that organizes car hire who should have responded in 28 days and have not!! Travel Republic are accepting no responsibility for the car hire stating they are just simply acting as the broker!! Working in business, it is always good to know who you are sub contracting to as well as listening to customer feedback. On this occasion Travel Republic clearly are not and are clearly not accepting any responsibility. Reading reviews of where things go wrong, which appear to be getting more common this appears to be the standard pattern. In time, the consequence will only be loss of faith from customers followed by dwindling profits and heaven forbid bankruptcy. The writing is on the wall unless Travel Republic does something to look at these common problems

Car hire was a rip-off for me, too. At the airport in Sicily, they told me lies to get me to pay extra CDW and Roadside Assistance. The small print of the original car hire booking shows that if you pay for CDW then it leaves about 1500 Euro to pay if there is an accident. Totally confused, I paid the extra at the airport. Travelrepublic have accepted no responsibility and simply passed on the hire firm's insistence that I signed an agreement so tough (although there are several inconsistencies in that, too). One small plus: Travel Republic repaid £35 of the £150 that I was ripped off by.
