We arrived at Makadi Palace Hotel in mid August during what would normally have been a busy week. That week many European countries had stopped sending flights to Hurghada. As such the hotel was only about 20-30% occupied. This had advantages: no queues at the buffet, easy booking at the restaurants and plenty of available sun beds.
Service throughout remained very good with consistently friendly attentive staff although sometimes an undercurrent that all was not well but that may have been more to do with the emptiness of the place which was a little spooky at times. I expect many staff had been laid off that week due to the sudden reduction of guests. The stoppage of German flights particularly affected this hotel. Our family occupied 5 rooms which were kept beautifully clean. Due to the shortage of guests 2 of the 5 dining rooms were closed each sitting which was understandable. However, they opened in rotation which maintained an element of variety.
Quality of food and preparation seemed to be affected slightly such as very undercooked chicken a couple of times and very rare (almost raw) lamb ... and I like pink lamb. However there was plenty of variety and service was excellent. There was no problem changing a meal or returning for another option. Although there also seemed to be a limitation on some food supplies there was still adequate choice.
Direct access to the beach was great with a few tiny beach bars and a very easy short walk to the jetty for snorkelling. The snorkelling experience straight from the jetty was out of this world ... shoals of tropical fish and even turtles. Amazing.
