“Hotel Adelais, Tavronitis, Western Crete”

★★★★☆

Just got back from a week in the Adelais in Western Crete. The hotel is a short walk from the village of Adelais. If you are looking for a lively resort with lots of bars and restaurants, this is not for you. However it suited our purpose as we were visiting friends who live nearby. The hotel setting is idyllic, in rural surroundings amidst olive groves, and only 5 minutes walk from a small beach. The beach is shingle so swimming shoes recommended if you are going to swim in the sea, but the view is stunning and there is a taverna overlooking the bay where you can get a lovely meal at very reasonable prices and just soak up the atmosphere. The Adelais has reasonable sized rooms, a huge pool (although the mosaic on the bottom of the pool needs attention as there are a lot of loose and missing tiles) and plenty of sunbeds. The food is excellent, delicious traditional greek food and always a pasta alternative if required and delicious salads, especially at lunchtime. The bar is quite basic, local drinks are included in the all inclusive package, but restricted to wine, beer and soft drinks during meal times, but for the price we paid, the Adelais represents excellent value for money, and we will no doubt return. Western Crete is beautiful and if you are prepared to hire a car, use local transport accessable from the village, or take advantage of Olympic days out, this is an excellent base as long you are not expecting to be in the midst of a resort.
