This was our fourth time to Cala D'Or and the third time of staying at the Rocador/Rocador Playa hotel complex. This hotel is very conveniently located - out the back of the hotel and down some steep steps and you are on the main beach, out the front of the hotel you are on the edge of the main town centre/shopping area. As this is comprises of two hotels which have been merged you are fortunate in having access to two reasonably sized swimming pools, however, both allow young children (many of whom are unsupervised by their parents) - it would be better and safer if one was to be adults only. We tend to use the pool linked to the Rocador Playa and both the pool and the patio areas and steps around it could do with some maintenance; loose ladders into the pool, cracks in the surrounding cement work, patio steps with chunks out of them presenting trip/fall hazards. Sun bathing beds and umbrellas are limited. The groundsman was in evidence every morning sweeping and cleaning so that was a bonus.
If you can get rooms in the Rocador rather than the Rocador Playa you are fortunate; these seem to be cleaner and more recently updated. Rooms in the Rocador Playa (we've stayed in them twice) appear shabbier and on both occasions have smelt of damp. You are also further away from the main reception, restaurant, bar and access to the beach.
There were three of us on this holiday and an extra bed had been added into a twin bedded room - this left little space to move around. The extra bed had minimal bedding and no cover on the mattress or over the single sheet. Towels are small and old - some had holes in - and limited to one hand towel and one very small bath towel each. Rooms were tidied and cleaned daily.
We have had bed and breakfast basis on each of our stays; the restaurant at breakfast time is often over-crowded and hot! Trying to work out how and where everything is can be a nightmare and then of course there can be long delays in getting anything that is freshly cooked from the grill and you can wait a long time for items to be replenished. There is generally a good range of foods so most people should be able to find something to eat.
Staff at Reception are generally helpful. The stairs from the Reception area up to the first floor, which gives access to rooms in the Rocador Playa section, are carpeted but the same tears and wear in the carpet and even stair rods as were damaged two years ago are in place on this visit. The hotel has now added Wi-Fi access, which is free, to its amenities, however, you really need to be in the main reception area for this to work! As we were leaving we discovered that the best reception was actually outside the hotel's main entrance!
Overall the hotel is 'tired' and in need of some up-dating. There are some great spaces in the hotel, which comes from it having been two hotels, which are under-used and lend themselves to being put to match more effective use for the benefit of guests.
The pricing for the hotel for an August holiday is not worth it - the pricing at other times of year is reasonable and what the hotel is worth. It's the type of hotel which provides a base but is not a holiday centre in its own right.
