We stayed for 10 days at the Atki Olous Hotel in Elounda, Crete in early June 2013. It was exactly as we had hoped and had expected. Bed and Breakfast terms at the hotel was the perfect way to explore the area and local restaurants. The hotel was comfortable with friendly and helpful staff, though some elements of our bathroom needed DIY - nothing major. Situated next to the water with the option of having breakfast in their outdoor restaurant that is built out over the water- a truly great way to enjoy the atmosphere and start the day. 10 days of sunshine also helped.
The hotel is far enough outside the centre of the resort to give a quiet holiday but close enough to enjoy a walk from the hotel to one of the many excellent waterfront restaurants (10 mins). To call Elounda a resort is to give an impression of a sprawl of tourist influenced business and some grubby sand with vendors extracting your last euro in exchange for some tacky souvenir. This is not Elounda - essentially it's a fishing port that has grown to accommodate the needs of the tourist but is still very much a place where local folk go to eat and shop which I guess is a sign that we were not in a traditional tourist resort.
The local people were all very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed - not one bad experience.
The only excursion we felt obliged to join was to Spinolonga Island which was in sight of the hotel well worth a visit. Readers of 'The Island' will recognise this name. Medieval Fortress, leper colony up to 1952 and now a deserted and atmospheric ruin just off the mainland. The island is best enjoyed early in the morning before the big tour boats arrive from other parts of Crete - catch an early boat from either Plaka or Elounda.
The only negative comment we had was the lack of help at the Heraklion Airport on our return to the UK. Search, as we did, there was no trace of an Olympic representative either in the 'check in' area or in the Olympic office. Luckily we were able to get some help from another tour operator. We had had such great service and attention all the way from the travel agent we booked the holiday through, to the driver who took us to Heraklion airport, but then zero from Olympic at the end - such a pity.
