My fiance and I came back from our holiday to Kalithea Sun & Sky in Rhodes on Thursday morning and we had a really good time. We had read a mixture of reviews of the hotel before we left, some of them very bad, so we went with an open mind and were not expecting too much. I can only say that the people who write the bad reviews expect too much from a 3* hotel - at the end of the day you get what you pay for, and if you are expecting an amazing 5* hotel then you should pay for one. The price was fair for the standard of the hotel, and also for all inclusive.
The staff were very friendly and helpful - nothing seemed to much for them and they always had a smile on their faces. The staff who worked on reception were very helpful and the waiters and waitresses in the restaurant were very efficient and friendly.
The rooms were pretty basic - only complaints are that the bathroom was extremely small and the beds were rock hard with only one very flat pillow which was a bit uncomfortable, but we got used to this as the week progressed and it wasn't too bad in the end. We had a mini fridge which was good so we could keep cold water in the room, a tv which is good although we hardly used it, and we also had a balcony which was nice as we were able to just sit out there in the late afternoon/evenings. Our room did have air conditioning although we found it didn't have much temperature control so we would often wake up in the early hours of the morning freezing and would have to turn it off.
The pool area was great - just what you would expect really. The pool was always clean and never too busy. We were always able to get a sunbed round the pool - we got up at about 8am every morning. If people couldn't get a sunbed right by the edge of the pool, there were plenty of spares that they could take onto the grass area just behind the pool.
Just outside the hotel there was a bar, restaurant and a small supermarket which was useful for stocking up on snacks and bottles of water. If you walk a little futher (about a 2-3 minute walk) you get to Kalithea town where there are a selection of bars, restaurants and shops. It was really nice to look round the shops and sit in the bars and restaurants. Although we were all inclusive, we ate out twice during the week. Our favourite restaurant was one where you could sit on the roof - I apologise as I have forgotten the name but it is on the right hand side of the road, opposite the Parrot Bar. The food was delicious and the staff were very very nice - we got given watermelon on the house after our meal which was a very nice touch. I would definitely recommend eating at this restaurant during your holiday.
We went on one trip to the Water Park in Faliraki which was a good day out. The only complaint I would have is that the day was not long enough - we got picked up at 10.00am (the coach was about 20 minutes late however) and met to go home at 3.30pm. We would have liked to have a little bit longer as we feel we could have gone on the slides many more times than we did - take into consideration there are queues for the slides as well.
Other than going to the Water Park we did not go to Faliraki, but if clubbing and partying is your scene then Faliraki is great for this, and is only about 10 minutes away from Kalithea. If you got a taxi it would probably cost you less than 10 euros. Faliraki beach is also supposed to be really good if you are a beach person!
We took a walk down to Kalithea beach one evening when the temperature had dropped a little - it is about a 10 minute walk away. It looked very pretty but we are not beach people so we didn't want to sunbathe there - it is very pebbly and looked quite compact. You can do water sports there though and take boat trips to Lindos - we would have loved to do this but didn't get round to it. I have been to Lindos on a previous holiday to Rhodes and it is absolutely beautiful, so I would definitely recommend either getting a boat there or a coach.
We went to Rhodes town the day before we were leaving which was a good day out. If you want to see a bit more of the Greek culture, old buildings etc then going to Rhodes town is a must. There are loads of shops and lots of pleasant bars and restaurants, and you can also see the remains of old Greek buildings/castles. We had a great time there and it only cost us 9 euros to get a taxi there and it was only about 10-15 minutes away.
On the day we were leaving, we had to be out of our room by 12pm (which is standard), but we were not being picked up to leave for the airport until 00.30 the next morning - we were able to keep our room for longer until 9pm for 42 euros. You have the choice of keeping it until 3, 6, 9 or 12 and the price is adjusted accordingly.
Kalithea is a great location - the bars, restaurants and shops there make it a pleasant little town but you are also not far away from Faliraki or Rhodes town if you fancy something a little different. I would definitely recommend that anyone go to Kalithea Sun & Sky.
