Fantastic value for money

Our 5-night stay in Gubbio was excellent value for money. The car hire (a Fiat Panda upgraded free of charge from a 'mini') was very good. The car had 10000km on the clock and was clean both inside and out. Dents and scratches were identified on the booking form but we found a couple more when we inspected the car on collection. The deposit (€600) and excess (€1600) were very high, hence the careful checks for scratches and dents when we picked the car up. The pick-up process was good. A free courtesy bus took us from the Ciampino terminal to the car rental area. Our car was booked through Firefly and this company was not identified in the rental area - we used the Hertz desk as this is the parent company.

The Sporting Hotel in Gubbio is an excellent base for exploring the area. It's approximately 15 minutes walk from the centre of town. Plenty of car parking at the hotel and two free car parks are near the town walls if walking isn't an option. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Our room was clean and functional though a little dated (1970s). The en-suite was clean and there was plenty of hot water in a good shower (no bath). We had a small fridge (unstocked mini-bar) in the room and this was useful for keeping bottled drinks cool. Not sure how effective the air conditioning would be in very warm weather (not much evidence of cool air being produced). We were staying on a B&B basis so didn't eat in the hotel restaurant other than for breakfast. This was standard, self-service continental fare. Some gluten-free options were available. Wi-fi was available in the hotel and was reasonably reliable.

A couple of supermarkets are located within 5 mins drive (15 mins walk) of the hotel and there are many restaurants in the town.

We had a free 1-hour cooking lesson in our package but decided not to take it up as it was at 11am and this would have broken up our day. We also had a wine-tasting experience but, again, did not take this up as it involved a 30 minute journey.

Overall, an excellent package from Broadway. Fantastic value for money.
