“Terrible customer service and Buyer Beware!”

I booked a hotel in Madrid and then decided to change dates, cancelled the first one and re-booked at a different one. When I got home the next month I saw that the first hotel had billed me in full on my credit card. I called Spain and asked what had happened. Apparently they have a 31 day cancellation policy. I no longer had my emails from this trip, deleting them earlier as I assumed everything was fine. When I looked at this hotels policy, I also saw that if you cancelled 48 hours in advance you would pay 100% of the first day (I know, the wording is awkward). I called booking.com and asked them what was going on because I am usually very careful about booking places that have no cancellation policy. The man told me that if I scrolled to the bottom of the page and moused over an image of two people I would see any conditions that apply. This is hardly an obvious place to show such an out-of-the-norm cancellation policy. A policy such as that should have been made much more clear to buyers, not hidden. The Hotel refused to even give me credit for the second day, saying that I would have had to cancel by midnight the night before. I cancelled 51.5 hours before the check in time. I feel this is ridiculous. Booking.com said there is nothing they can do. The icing on the cake is when I did stay in Madrid with my daughter, I specifically requested two beds. I got one double bed. The hotel showed me what Booking.com sent them. It wasn't very fun or comfortable sharing a double bed with a 13-year old for two days. We will never use Booking.com again.
