my daughter in law booked a room with free cancellation with booking.com. her husband fell ill and she tried to cancel. the hotel owner said sha could but to confirm it with booking.com. she was told she could not and to read the small print about free cancellation.
i have used the site a lot and always gone for the free cancellation option, usually costing more,but i will never use it again,this is just taking money under false pretences.
